Effects of Fractionated Plasma Separation and Adsorption on Survival in Patients With Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure

2012

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fractionated plasma separation and adsorption (FPSA) is an extracorporeal procedure that supports liver function by removing endogenous toxins that cause complications from acute-on-chronic liver failure (AOCLF). We performed a randomized trial to investigate survival of patients with AOCLF treated with FPSA. METHODS: Patients with AOCLF were randomly assigned to groups given a combination of FPSA and standard medical therapy (SMT) (FPSA group, n = 77) or only SMT (SMT group, n = 68). The Prometheus liver support system was used to provide 8 to 11 rounds of FPSA (minimum of 4 hours each) for 3 weeks. Primary end points were survival probabilities at days 28 and 90, irresp…

Characterization of lacrimal proline-rich protein 4 (PRR4) in human tear proteome

2014

This study was initiated considering the lack of comprehensive characteristics profile of PRR4 in tears of healthy subjects. Therefore, detailed characterizations of PRR4 from basal tears employing in-gel and in-solution digestions for MS systems are presented herein. First, pooled tear samples (n = 10) were utilized to identify PRR4-rich region/spots in 1DE/2DE gels employing LC-MALDI-MS and 1DE-LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS systems. PRR4-rich region and ten spots with vast polymorphisms (Mr : 17-30 kDa, pI: 3.0-6.6) were identified in 1DE and 2DE gels, respectively. In addition, combinations of four types of PTMs, which are methylation, acetylation, oxidation, and pyroglutamate formation, were i…

Biomonitoring in wearers of permethrin impregnated battle dress uniforms in Afghanistan and Germany.

2013

Objectives To analyse differences in uptake of the insecticide permethrin in wearers of non-impregnated and permethrin impregnated battle dress uniforms (BDU) in Afghanistan and Germany. Methods In two separate studies, in April 2003–January 2004 (study I, n=549) and in February–April 2005 (study II, n=195), healthy female and male members of the German Federal Armed Forces were equipped with permethrin impregnated BDU (two sub-cohorts in Germany and one in Afghanistan) while members equipped with non-impregnated uniforms served as a control group. Human biomonitoring was conducted before, during and after wearing the uniforms by measuring permethrin metabolites in urine samples via GC–MS. …

Determination of acetylcholine, nitrostigmine and acetylcholinesterase activity in four patients with severe nitrostigmine (E 605 forte) intoxication.

1974

Concentrations of acetylcholine and nitrostigmine as well as acetylcholinesterase activity were determined in 4 patients with severe nitrostigmine intoxication. In the acute phase of the intoxication, acetylcholine levels up to 36 and 55 ng/ml were found in blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, respectively. At the same time no activity of acetylcholinesterase in plasma and erythrocytes was detected. Acetylcholinesterase activity gradually recovered at the end of the second week. In the first 3 days after the ingestion plasma nitrostigmine concentrations ranged from 409 to 86 ng/ml. At the end of the third week nitrostigmine was still found in a concentration of about 1 ng/ml plasma. Redist…

External and internal exposure of wine growers spraying methyl parathion.

2005

Organophosphates, used in agriculture, are readily absorbed through the skin. We investigated the relationship between dermal and inhalative methyl parathion exposure and the plasma levels. Twenty-three healthy wine growers sprayed the insecticide for 50 min. Fluorescent brilliant sulfoflavin was added to the spraying fluids and filter papers were fixed on the subjects. The filter papers were used to evaluate the amount of brilliant sulfoflavine on the unprotected skin fluorometrically. Inhalative exposure was measured with personal air sampler. Plasma concentrations of methyl parathion and its metabolite methyl paraoxon were determined with gas chromatography. Cholinesterase activity in se…

Isolated hevein-like domains, but not 31-kd endochitinases, are responsible for IgE-mediated in vitro and in vivo reactions in latex-fruit syndrome.

2005

Background Individuals with natural rubber latex allergy often have immediate reactions to plant-derived foods and fresh fruits, such as avocado and banana. IgE of these patients has been shown to bind endochitinases containing an N-terminal hevein-like domain (HLD). However, evidence on 31-kd endochitinase-induced reactions in vivo is lacking. Objective We sought to assess the clinical significance of 31-kd endochitinases and isolated HLDs in latex-fruit syndrome. Methods The 31-kd endochitinases and corresponding HLDs were purified or produced from avocado, banana, latex, and wheat germ. Skin prick test reactivities against purified proteins were examined in 15 patients with natural rubbe…

Pharmacokinetics of triamterene after i.v. administration to man: determination of bioavailability.

1983

With a new formulation, which made intravenous infusion of triamterene (TA) possible, plasma levels and urinary excretion rates of TA and its main metabolite (OH-TA-ester) were measured in a randomized, cross-over trial in 6 healthy volunteers given triamterene 10 mg i.v. and 50 mg p.o. TA and OH-TA-ester were determined by densitometric measurement of native fluorescence after thin layer chromatography. Distribution volumes of the central compartment of TA and OH-TA-ester were 1.49 l/kg and 0.11 l/kg, respectively. Terminal half-lives were 255 min for TA and 188 min for OH-TA-ester after i.v. administration. For TA total plasma clearance was 4.5 l/min and renal plasma clearance 0.22 l/kg. …

External apical root resorption in maxillary root-filled incisors after orthodontic treatment : a split-mouth design study

2011

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare, in a split mouth design, the external apical root resorption (EARR) associated with orthodontic treatment in root-filled maxillary incisors and their contralateral teeth with vital pulps. Methodology: The study sample consisted of 38 patients (14 males and 24 females), who had one root-filled incisor before completion of multiband/bracket orthodontic therapy for at least 1 year. For each patient, digital panoramic radiographs taken before and after orthodontic treatment were used to determine the root resortion and the proportion of external root resorption (PRR), defined as the ratio between the root resorption in the endodontically t…
