Inorganic nanomaterials in the aquatic environment: behavior, toxicity, and interaction with environmental elements

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to present characteristics, toxicity and environmental behavior of nanoparticles (NPs) (silver, copper, gold, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, iron oxide) that most frequently occur in consumer products. In addition, NPs are addressed as the new aquatic environmental pollutant of the 21stcentury. NPs are adsorbed onto particles in the aquatic systems (clay minerals, fulvic and humic acids), or they can adsorb environmental pollutants (heavy metal ions, organic compounds). Metallothionein (MT) has been proposed as a specific biochemical probe for metal exposure of aquatic organisms. It is recognized that its usefulness as a monitoring tool depends on the full understanding of its function and on the possibility of measuring its concentration in tissues. Study by static SIMS, XPS and UPS of the adsorption of cyanogen on (100) Ni surfaces

Abstract The interaction of cyanogen with (100) Ni surfaces at room temperature was studied using secondary ion mass spectrometry in a static mode, and photoemission spectroscopies (XPS and UPS). It has been shown that cyanogen is adsorbed on this nickel surface in a dissociative mode: atomic carbon and nitrogen are present on the surface as well as CN fragments. These adsorbed species have been characterized by XPS and UPS. Increasing the temperature in the 400 K range increases the rate of the dissociation reaction of CN into atomic carbon and nitrogen. A surface EXAFS study of thin nickel deposits on (110) TiO2 surfaces

Abstract The first stages of nickel deposition on a clean (110) TiO 2 surface were studied using surface extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Experiments were performed on two kinds of nickel deposits, one of 0.8 equivalent monolayers and another of 1.6 equivalent monolayers. Depositions were performed on well characterized TiO 2 (110)-p(1 × 1) surfaces. The correlation of Auger experiments with EXAFS results showed that no islands were present on the surface; only two-dimensional growth of nickel was observed. Sorption of uranium(VI) onto ferric oxides in sulfate-rich acid waters.

The mechanisms of the uranium(VI) sorption on schwertmannite and goethite in acid sulfate-rich solutions were studied by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The samples were prepared under N2 atmosphere and initial uranium(VI) concentrations of 1 x 10(-5) (pH 6.5) to 5 x 10(-5) M (pH 4.2). The ionic strength was adjusted using 0.01 M Na2SO4 or 0.01 M NaClO4, respectively. The EXAFS structural parameters for uranium(VI) sorbed on goethite in sulfate-rich, acid and near-neutral solutions indicate that uranium(VI) forms an inner-sphere, mononuclear, bidentate surface complex. Predicting the activity of single isolated Lewis acid sites in solid catalysts.

An experimental study of the activity of Ti-, Zr- and Sn-beta catalysts in different types of oxidation reactions is combined with a quantum-chemical analysis of the electronic properties of the active sites and the adsorbed reactants. The differences observed in the catalytic behaviour of the three materials are explained in terms of the molecular orbital distribution of each system. The intrinsic Lewis acid strength of the isolated active site, the degree of back-donation from the catalyst to the empty orbitals of the organic reactant and the net atomic charges on selected atoms are proposed as predictors of reactivity.

Electrostatic phenomena in ion exchange membranes

Abstract Specific and transport properties of a cation and an anion exchange membrane in Na + and Cl - form respectively have been measured in water and dioxane water mixtures. A greater electrolyte absorption and a lesser specific conductivity and counterion transport number in solvents at higher dioxane content indicate strong electrostatic interactions between fixed groups in the membrane and counterions.

Removal of hexavalent chromium from wastewaters by bone charcoal

The adsorption of hexavalent chromium onto bone charcoal was studied as a function of time, amount of charcoal, pH, concentration of chromium and sample volume. The cross interference with other elements was also investigated. Tests were carried out with solutions of chromium(VI) at concentrations between 5 and 25 mg · L–1. Chromium removal efficiencies higher than 90% were achieved at pH = 1 using 2 g of bone charcoal and a stirring time in the order of 30 min. Acid and alkaline pretreatments of bone charcoal did not improve the sorption capacity of bone charcoal against Cr(VI). Effect of Mg2+ ions on competitive metal ions adsorption/desorption on magnesium ferrite : mechanism, reusability and stability studies

The adsorption behavior of magnesium ferrite in single- and multicomponent metal ions solutions in the presence of Mg2+ ions were studied. A dramatic decrease in the adsorption capacity of magnesium ferrite towards Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ ions for comparison study of single- and multicomponent solutions was established. The affinity of the sorbent in accordance with the maximum sorption capacities increases in the following order Cu2+ > Co2+ > Ni2+ > Mn2+. High efficiency of magnesium ferrite regeneration (~100%) with aqueous solutions of magnesium chloride in the concentration range of 0.001-0.1 M was shown.
