Protein Corona: Prevention of Dominant IgG Adsorption on Nanocarriers in IgG‐Enriched Blood Plasma by Clusterin Precoating (Adv. Sci. 10/2019)

The development of nanocarriers for drug delivery is challenged by individual blood composition fluctuations. In article number 1802199, Svenja Morsbach and co‐workers report the accumulation of immunoglobulins in the protein corona of nanocarriers in IgG‐enriched blood plasma resulting in increased cell uptake. This could be prevented by pre‐coating the nanocarriers with the “stealth” protein clusterin. Cover design by Stefan Schuhmacher.

Importance of Propionibacterium acnes hemolytic activity in human intervertebral discs: A microbiological study

Most patients with chronic lower back pain (CLBP) exhibit degenerative disc disease. Disc specimens obtained during initial therapeutic discectomies are often infected/colonized with Propionibacterium acnes, a Gram-positive commensal of the human skin. Although pain associated with infection is typically ascribed to the body's inflammatory response, the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus was recently observed to directly activate nociceptors by secreting pore-forming α-hemolysins that disrupt neuronal cell membranes. Chemical Vapor Deposition Synthesis and Terahertz Photoconductivity of Low-Band-Gap N = 9 Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons.

Recent advances in bottom-up synthesis of atomically defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with various microstructures and properties have demonstrated their promise in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here we synthesized N = 9 armchair graphene nanoribbons (9-AGNRs) with a low optical band gap of ∼1.0 eV and extended absorption into the infrared range by an efficient chemical vapor deposition process. Time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy was employed to characterize the photoconductivity in 9-AGNRs and revealed their high intrinsic charge-carrier mobility of approximately 350 cm2·V-1·s-1.

Influence of the filling factor on the spectral properties of plasmonic crystals

Plasmonics crystals (PCs) comprised of finite-size triangular lattices of gold bumps deposited on a gold thin film are studied by means of a near-field optical microscope. Identification of Lactobacilli from Deep Carious Lesions by Means of Species-Specific PCR and MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

SUMMARY Background: The aim of the present study was to compare MALDI-TOF results for the identification of 87 lactobacilli, isolated from soft or hard carious dentin from 70 first molars of 7- to 8-year-old children with those obtained by species-specific PCR. Methods: The 87 isolates were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS (Microflex LT, MALDI Biotyper 3.0, Bruker Daltonik, Bremen, Germany), using a reference data base of 4110 strains including > 90 lactobacillus species. Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous toluene on polycrystalline TiO2: FT-IR investigation of surface reactivity of different types of catalysts

Commercial TiO 2 Merck and TiO 2 Degussa P25 powders were employed as the catalysts for the photo-oxidation of toluene. By using TiO 2 Merck benzaldehyde was found in gas phase as the main product of the toluene partial oxidation. After an initial transient period, this catalyst exhibited a high stability in the presence of water vapour in the gaseous mixture, whereas the photoproduction of benzaldehyde sharply decreases after removal of H 2 O from the feed IR spectra of the used catalyst revealed that in the absence of water vapour benzaldehyde is molecularly held on the catalyst surface. Theoretical absorption and emission spectra of 1H- and 2H-benzotriazole

Excitation energies, dipole moments, and transition properties for the lowest-lying 1(π, π*) and 1(n, π*) electronic states of two benzotriazole tautomers have been studied at the complete active space (CAS) SCF and multiconfigurational second-order perturbation (CASPT2) levels. With these results, the UV absorption spectra of 1H- and 2H-benzotriazole were first described individually, and then they were considered simultaneously in order to better understand the experimental, observed spectrum of benzotriazole. Aspects of the fluorescence of the compound have been also analyzed. The spectrum of benzotriazole is finally related to those of other azo-compounds.

Phytochromes are photosensor proteins in plants and bacteria. The biological response is mediated by structural changes that follow photon absorption in the protein complex. The initial step is the photoisomerization of the biliverdin chromophore. How this leads to large-scale structural changes of the whole complex is, however, poorly understood. Synthesis of a New Disulfide Affinity Adsorbent for Purification of Human Uterine Progesterone Receptor

For purification of the human uterine progesterone receptor, an affinity adsorbent was synthesized in which the specific ligand (16 alpha-ethyl-3-oxo-19nor-androst-4-ene 17 beta-carboxylic acid) was bound to derivatized celulose using a disulfide-group-containing spacer. The purified receptor protein, isolated by reductive cleavage of the disulfide bond, bound the synthetic gestagen R5020 with high affinity (Kd 12.2 nmol/l). The affinity gel was highly efficient.
