Collaborative argumentation through role-play by students on a degree programme in social services

The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of collaborative argumentation by students enrolled in a degree program in social services. Students (n = 29) in a University of Applied Sciences participated in role-play discussions and problem solving on adolescents’ substance abuse. The discussions were conducted either online (15 students) or face-to-face (14 students). The data comprise the students’ asynchronous online and face-to-face discussions, which were analysed by identifying discussion fragments relevant in collaborative argumentation, and by comparing the results of the two groups. The recently reformed Finnish Social Welfare Act obligates public social work to enact structural social work, and to address the community- and structural-level social problems behind individual cases. This article examines how community work and structural social work are conceived by early career social workers. Given that multiple countries have recently adopted social work practice models in children’s services, it is striking that only a few studies have systematically analysed both the level of fidelity and potential implementation barriers and facilitators. The aim of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis of how and why the Reclaiming Social Work (RSW) model works in different settings. Evaluating the effectiveness of the systemic practice model of children’s social care – A pilot study on child- and family-level outcomes

The Systemic Practice Model (SPM) is a Finnish adaptation of the Reclaiming Social Work (RSW) model, which incorporates systemic ideas and practice into children’s social care. This study is the first attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of the RSW model outside England. The study employed a quasi-experimental repeated measures design. Questionnaires assessing child- and family-level outcomes and the quantity (i.e., number of meetings) and quality (i.e., service user feedback) of the practice were administered to social workers, children and parents twice over a six-month follow-up period. Recognising forced migrants in transnational social work

PurposeNation states’ neoliberal policies do not regard asylum seekers and undocumented migrants as deserving of a good life. Social work in welfare states is highly connected to the policies of nation states. There is a need to address theories in social work that have a transnational focus at the local level. Axel Honneth’s recognition theory enables an approach to forced migration from the direction of personal relations and personhood itself. The core idea is that if people cannot gain recognition, this causes harm to their self-realisation. Tutkimukseni taustana on kasvava maahanmuutto Suomeen, maahanmuuttajien kotouttamiseen tähtäävä politiikka ja monikulttuurinen, aikuisten maahanmuuttajien parissa tehtävä sosiaalityö. Tarkastelen työssäni maahanmuuttoa ja kulttuurista toiseen siirtymistä koskevia teorioita asettaen keskeiseksi arvoksi maahanmuuttajien integroitumisen, kotoutumisen uuteen maahan ja yhteiskuntaan. Aihepiiri on ajankohtainen, sillä elinkeinoelämän edustajat toivovat työperäisen maahanmuuton kasvua. Tutkielmassani käsittelen aktivoitumista voimaantumisprosessin osana, johon henkilö kiinnittyy henkilökohtaisen päätöksentekoprosessin myötä. Päätöksentekoprosessin viitekehyksenä tarkastelen suomalaista aktiivista sosiaalipolitiikkaa 1990-luvun alusta lähtien. Tavoitteenani on tuoda uutta sisältöä nykyiseen aikuissosiaalityön aktivointikeskusteluun tarkastelemalla aktivoitumista ei pelkästään sosiaalipoliittisesta ja rakenteellisesta näkökulmasta, vaan ensisijaisesti yksilön subjektiivisena päätöksentekoprosessina.
