ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PERCUTANEOUS TREATMENT OF MUSCLE HEMATOMAS IN ATHLETES

2009

Muscle lesions, a frequent event in sport, often cause hematomas. In fact, both in the traumatic direct injuries, as in American football, and in the traumatic indirect ones, as in strength sports, lesions interesting leg's Muscles Cause intra- and extramuscular hematomas. A diagnosis in a short time, allow LIS to evaluate the lesion rank and plan a surgery approach. Authors present high resolution Ultrasound (HRSU) as a new diagnostic method for this kind of lesion. It allows us to confirm clinic diagnosis, define the lesion's areas and follow-up. Moreover, HRSU has all important role in therapy, promoting in real time the blood's aspiration from lesion's area. Three phases after trauma, d…

Development of an ultrasound-based muscle texture analysis as a potential imaging biomarker for frailty phenotype

2018

Sodium ion distribution in the vitreous body

1996

We have studied the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation behavior, and thus the dynamic properties, of the sodium ion in the vitreous body at different temperatures. The 23Na NMR spectrum exhibits a resonance, the intensity of which accounts for an ion visibility of 100%. The 23Na longitudinal and transverse relaxation times, at all temperatures but the highest, present two components, suggesting that the sodium ions are present in two states of different mobility, whose populations are in slow exchange on the NMR time scale. The correlation times and quadrupole coupling constants for the two sodium pools have been derived. The faster relaxation of a fraction of the vitreal sodium ha…

Plaque and blood vulnerability in ST segment elevation myocardial infarction patients: association between lesion morphology using intravascular ultr…

2013

AIM The purpose of the study was to evaluate associations between iMap intravascular ultrasound tissue characterization of culprit and nonculprit lesions in infarct-related artery and plasma biomarkers during ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and at 10-month follow-up. METHODS AND RESULTS Sixty-three STEMI patients at the time of index hospitalization and 10-month follow-up underwent coronary angiography and intravascular ultrasound with iMap tissue characterization of the culprit artery. Proximal and culprit segments were analyzed. A higher percentage of necrotic tissue in the nonculprit segment was found in patients in the top soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sI…

Linguistic relevance of duration within the native language determines the accuracy of speech-sound duration processing.

2003

As indexed by electrophysiological measures, in native speakers of a language with linguistically significant opposition between short and long phonemes, the pre-attentive detection accuracy of duration changes in speech sounds was tuned in comparison with that in non-speech sounds. This was not observed in advanced second-language users of the same language, suggesting that second-language acquisition does not lead to speech-specific tuning of the duration processing as does native language acquisition in early childhood.

Frequency of dicentrics and contamination levels in Ukrainian children and adolescents from areas near Chernobyl 20 years after the nuclear plant acc…

2013

International audience; Purpose To survey the possible presence of chromosomal damage and internal contamination in a group of Ukrainian children and adolescents, 20 years after the Chernobyl accident at the Nuclear Power Plant. Materials and methods Cytogenetical procedures were performed according to dicentric assay in 55 Ukrainian children and adolescents (29 boys and 26 girls), living near Chernobyl. In addition, a whole body detector and urinalysis were used to detect internal contamination. Results 36 dicentrics were found in a total of 53,477 metaphases scored in these children, which reflected a frequency of dicentrics below the background level. On the other hand, internal contamin…

Therapeutic Application of 20-kHz Transcranial Ultrasound in an Embolic Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model in Rats

2007

Background and Purpose— Therapeutic application of diagnostic ultrasound has been shown to improve recanalization rates in patients with acute cerebral vessel occlusion. There is experimental evidence that low-frequency ultrasound may be superior. This study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of low-frequency ultrasound in an embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion model in rats. A parameter setting was used that had not previously shown any side effects and interactions with healthy rat brain tissue. Methods— Male Wistar rats were submitted to middle cerebral artery clot embolism and transcranial treatment with 20-kHz continuous-wave ultrasound (0.2 W/cm 2 ), ei…

Aging and disability affect misdiagnosis of COPD in elderly asthmatics: the SARA study

2003

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study investigated to what extent a diagnosis of COPD is erroneously made or the disease remains unrecognized in elderly asthmatic patients, and identified factors leading to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of asthma in such patients. DESIGN: A multicenter study involving 24 Italian pulmonary or geriatric institutions. PATIENTS: One hundred twenty-eight asthmatic patients (98 women, 76.6%) aged 73 +/- 6.4 years (mean +/- SD) were selected from the cohort of the Salute Respiratoria nell'Anziano (respiratory health in the elderly) study. METHODS: All patients underwent a clinical evaluation that included clinical history and spirometry with a bronchodilator test. A diag…

Multisensory integration in hemianopia and unilateral spatial neglect: Evidence from the sound induced flash illusion.

2016

Recent neuropsychological evidence suggests that acquired brain lesions can, in some instances, abolish the ability to integrate inputs from different sensory modalities, disrupting multisensory perception. We explored the ability to perceive multisensory events, in particular the integrity of audio-visual processing in the temporal domain, in brain-damaged patients with visual field defects (VFD), or with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), by assessing their sensitivity to the 'Sound-Induced Flash Illusion' (SIFI). The study yielded two key findings. Firstly, the 'fission' illusion (namely, seeing multiple flashes when a single flash is paired with multiple sounds) is reduced in both left- …
