Positioning with stationary emitters in a two-dimensional space-time

2006

The basic elements of the relativistic positioning systems in a two-dimensional space-time have been introduced in a previous work [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 73}, 084017 (2006)] where geodesic positioning systems, constituted by two geodesic emitters, have been considered in a flat space-time. Here, we want to show in what precise senses positioning systems allow to make {\em relativistic gravimetry}. For this purpose, we consider stationary positioning systems, constituted by two uniformly accelerated emitters separated by a constant distance, in two different situations: absence of gravitational field (Minkowski plane) and presence of a gravitational mass (Schwarzschild plane). The physical coord…

ON THE STABILITY OF SUPERSYMMETRY IN CURVED SPACE-TIME

1990

We discuss the stability of the classical supergravity background in a simple supersymmetric model at the quantum level, showing that two different pictures emerge depending on whether the emphasis is placed on the conformal invariance or on the supersymmetry invariance of the theory.

Positioning in a flat two-dimensional space-time: the delay master equation

2010

The basic theory on relativistic positioning systems in a two-dimensional space-time has been presented in two previous papers [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 73}, 084017 (2006); {\bf 74}, 104003 (2006)], where the possibility of making relativistic gravimetry with these systems has been analyzed by considering specific examples. Here we study generic relativistic positioning systems in the Minkowski plane. We analyze the information that can be obtained from the data received by a user of the positioning system. We show that the accelerations of the emitters and of the user along their trajectories are determined by the sole knowledge of the emitter positioning data and of the acceleration of only one …

Particles and energy fluxes from a conformal field theory perspective

2004

We analyze the creation of particles in two dimensions under the action of conformal transformations. We focus our attention on Mobius transformations and compare the usual approach, based on the Bogoliubov coefficients, with an alternative but equivalent viewpoint based on correlation functions. In the latter approach the absence of particle production under full Mobius transformations is manifest. Moreover, we give examples, using the moving-mirror analogy, to illustrate the close relation between the production of quanta and energy.

The Geometry of Space-Time and Its Deformations from a Physical Perspective

2007

We start with an epistemological introduction on the evolution of the concepts of space and time and more generally of physical concepts in the context of the relation between mathematics and physics from the point of view of deformation theory. The concepts of relativity, including anti de Sitter space-time, and of quantization, are important paradigms; we briefly present these and some consequences. The importance of symmetries and of space-time in fundamental physical theories is stressed. The last section deals with “composite elementary particles” in anti de Sitter space-time and ends with speculative ideas around possible quantized anti de Sitter structures in some parts of the univer…

Asymptotic Safety, Fractals, and Cosmology

2013

These lecture notes introduce the basic ideas of the asymptotic safety approach to quantum Einstein gravity (QEG). In particular they provide the background for recent work on the possibly multi-fractal structure of the QEG space-times. Implications of asymptotic safety for the cosmology of the early Universe are also discussed.

Towards asteroseismology of core-collapse supernovae with gravitational wave observations – II. Inclusion of space–time perturbations

2018

Improvements in ground-based, advanced gravitational wave (GW) detectors may allow in the near future to observe the GW signal of a nearby core-collapse supernova. For the most common type of progenitors, likely with slowly rotating cores, the dominant GW emission mechanisms are the post-bounce oscillations of the proto-neutron star (PNS) before the explosion. We present a new procedure to compute the eigenmodes of the system formed by the PNS and the stalled accretion shock in general relativity including spacetime perturbations. The new method improves on previous results by accounting for perturbations of both the lapse function and the conformal factor. We apply our analysis to two nume…

Spin as Primordial Self-Referential Process Driving Quantum Mechanics, Spacetime Dynamics and Consciousness

2007

We have recently theorized that consciousness is intrinsically connected to quantum mechanical spin since said spin is embedded in the microscopic structure of spacetime and is more fundamental than spacetime itself, that is, spin is the “mind-pixel.” Applying these ideas to the particular structures and dynamics of the brain, we have developed a qualitative model of quantum consciousness. In this paper, we express our fundamental view that spin is a primordial self-referential process driving quantum mechanics, spacetime dynamics and consciousness. To justify such a view, we will draw support from existing literatures, discuss from a reductionist perspective the essential properties said s…

Post-editorial of the special issue "Wormholes in space-time: theory and facts"

2020

Wormholes made their first appearance in gravitational physics as soon as in 1916 but, as with their black hole cousins, it took a long time and effort for their true nature to be properly understood [...]
