Research activities are subject to constant processes of evaluation, which increasingly include the use of bibliometric indicators to support decision-making. This paper presents a model for the individual evaluation of different facets of researchers' work and discusses the interest in using “control” parameters to identify deviations suggesting inappropriate conduct. The volcanic products of the late Miocene Morron de Villamayor volcano (Calatrava Volcanic Field, central Spain) are known for being one of the few outcrops of leucitites in the entire circum-Mediterranean area. These rocks are important because aragonite of mantle origin has been reported as inclusion in olivine macrocrysts. We use petrographic observations, mineral compositions, as well as oxygen and carbon isotope ratios coupled with experimental petrology to understand the origin of carbonate phase in these olivine-phyric rocks. Groundmass and macrocryst olivines range from δ18OVSMOW of +4.8‰, typical of mantle olivine values, to +7.4‰, indicating contamination by sedimentary carbonate.…

Transcontinental 2200 km migration of a Nathusius’ pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii) across Europe

A male Pipistrellus nathusii ringed in Pape Natural Park (S Latvia) in August 2015 was recovered recently dead in Pitillas’ Lagoon Natural Reserve (N Spain) in March 2017. At 2224 km in SSW direction, this is the first documented bat migration between these countries and worldwide the longest migration record of a bat. We also report other observations of this species in autumn in Northern Spain, suggesting that the Iberian Peninsula may be an important wintering area for Nathusius’ pipistrelles. Conservation measures should be agreed on by countries along the migration routes to improve the protection of this species. nonPeerReviewed
Efficacy of Ethics Education in Library and Information Science

This work explains the need to adapt the content of ethics training programs in library and information science (LIS) studies to two fundamental aspects: the future professional requirements of students and the beliefs of the students in this field of study. A purely qualitative investigative strategy, including the use of vignettes, was employed to demonstrate that a theoretical-practical methodology of teaching-learning, supported by a combination of ethics theories and a model of ethical reasoning, changes the attitude of students, adapting individual and professional ethical values for the future exercise of the profession.

Montlivaltia multiformis Taula (Scleractinia, Faviina, Montlivaltidae), formerly reported from the Carpatho Balkanic domain is described from Lower Aptian beds of the Prebetic Domain (SE Spain). Taxonomic attributes include the organisation of radial elements, septal trabeculae, carinae and endothecal elements while the external morphology of the coralla is fairly variable. The sedimentological context suggests a circalittoral environment also supported by palaecological features of the surrounding fauna. Samples collected in underground waters of Spain by Ine Meijers and Jos Notenboom demonstrated the presence of some oculated asellids previously known: Proasellus coiffaiti, P. coxalis, and P. meridianus, and also four new stygophilous species, more or less depigmented, with different stages of regression of the ocular system: P. beticus n. sp., P. ortizi n. sp., P. aragonensis n. sp., and P. ebrensis n. sp. These forms represent relict populations of ancient epigean species. The anophthalmous species of the Aquitanian Basin, Pyrenees, and Iberian Peninsula are more closely related to P. beticus and P. ortizi than to the Recent epigean species P. coxalis and P. meridianus.
Larval trematode infections in freshwater gastropods from the Albufera Natural Park in Spain

AbstractMalacological samplings were made from January 1994 to December 1996 in the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain) to trace the dynamics of molluscan populations and the prevalence and intensity of infection by larval trematodes. A total of 10,533 freshwater gastropods belonging to seven species (Lymnaea auricularia, L. truncatula, L. palustris, L. peregra, Bithynia tentaculata, Physa acuta and Gyraulus chinensis) was examined, and 110 (1.04%) were found to harbour some of the nine distinguishable types of cercariae, namely four echinostome cercariae (Hypoderaeum conoideum, Echinoparyphium recurvatum, Euparyphium albuferensis, and Echinostoma sp.), four furcocercous cercariae, and …
