For several of Leonardo da Vinci's paintings, such as The Virgin and Child with St Anne or the Mona Lisa, there exist copies produced by his own studio. In case of the Mona Lisa, a quite exceptional, rediscovered studio copy was presented to the public in 2012 by the Prado Museum in Madrid. Not only does it mirror its famous counterpart superficially; it also features the very same corrections to the lower layers, which indicates that da Vinci and the ‘copyist’ must have elaborated their panels simultaneously. When measuring fixation disparity (an oculomotor vergence error), the question arises as to whether a monocular or binocular calibration is more precise and physiologically more appropriate. In monocular calibrations, a single eye fixates on a calibration target that is taken as having been projected onto the center of the fovea; the corresponding vergence state represents the heterophoria (the resting vergence position), which has no effect on the calibration procedure. What is already known about this subject • Despite encouraging effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists in reducing neuropathic pain of different aetiologies, the clinical use of these agents has been limited by their mainly psychotropic side-effects. • In a recent study in healthy volunteers, CNS 5161, a novel noncompetetive NMDA receptor antagonist, was well tolerated up to a dosage of 2000 µg without psychotropic side-effects. • This is the first study to evaluate the maximal tolerated dosage of CNS 5161 and to gain experience about the analgesic effect of CNS 5161 in patients with different pain syndromes. Primary perianal fistulous pathology represents a painful condition often noticeable in patients affected by Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis. It causes difficult defecation and can evolve in perianal abscess that should be urgently ascertained and drained. The present work aims to propose Argentum-Quartz® as valid non-surgical therapeutic treatment in order to reach a more comfortable perianal fistula healing. In fact, our preliminary data allow us to consider Argentum Quartz® ideally employable for treatment of perianal fistulas associated or not with IBDs, representing a reliable sphincter-sparing solution.

Transient hepatic nodular lesions associated with patent ductus venosus in preterm infants.

We report on two cases of low-birth-weight preterm infants with patent ductus venosus associated with hepatic hypoechoic lesions of the fourth segment in an otherwise normal liver. Although tumorlike hepatic lesions have been previously reported in association with portosystemic shunts in children and adults, they were never described in preterm infants during physiological patency of ductus venosus. In our patients, hepatic lesions disappeared shortly after the spontaneous ductus closure. Physiopathologic interactions are discussed regarding altered portal blood supply caused by ductus venosus shunt.

Abstract Background This study examined the hypothesis that allelic variants of the ionotropic glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) are associated with vulnerability to alcoholism and some related traits. Methods We investigated the silent G2108A and C2664T polymorphisms of the NMDAR1 and the NMDAR2B genes, respectively. The case control study included 367 alcoholic and 335 control subjects of German origin. The family-based study comprised 81 Polish alcoholic patients and their parents using the transmission disequilibrium test.
