Elaboration of metal / ceramic functionally graded materials by SPS for ballistic protection

The objective is to improve ballistic performance of armors. A perfect armor combines ductility to resistto the impact and high hardness to stop projectile’s fragments. However, such an association of properties is inconsistent witha single material. The solution is to perform a functionally graded material (FGM) with a ductile metal at the back side of thesample and a hard ceramic on the top side. Microstructure and mechanical effects of spark plasma sintering in alumina monolithic ceramics

The specific effects of spark plasma sintering (SPS) on the creep behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of alumina monolithic ceramic were investigated. SPS introduces strains that concentrate at grain boundaries and inhibit crack growth, resulting in an improvement in the flexural strength and fracture toughness. However, creep blocks grain boundary movements and decreases the reliability of the material. These strains can be removed by a post-sintering thermal treatment, which plays an important role in the distribution of dislocations.

Activity-Dependent Regulation of Neuronal Apoptosis in Neonatal Mouse Cerebral Cortex

A massive neuronal loss during early postnatal development has been well documented in the murine cerebral cortex, but the factors that drive cells into apoptosis are largely unknown. The role of neuronal activity in developmental apoptosis was studied in organotypic neocortical slice cultures of newborn mice. Multielectrode array and whole-cell patch-clamp recordings revealed spontaneous network activity characterized by synchronized burst discharges, which could be blocked by tetrodotoxin and ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonists. Abdominal radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dis- section as introduced by Wertheim and Meigs [1–2] first in the beginning of the century is still regarded as “gold stan- dard” in the surgical treatment of the uterine cervix carci- noma, FIGO stages IA2-IB and IIA. The resection of the parametrial and paracervical tissues proposed by the conventional radical hysterectomy is based on a “centrifu- gal diffusion” from the center of the tumor on the direction of the parametrial (dorsal, lateral and ventral) highways. This imply a classic functional and ligament-focused view of the surgical anatomy.

Charybdis glaucophylla (Asparagaceae), a new species from Sardinia, is described and illustrated. It is a diploid species with 2n = 20 chromosomes growing along the rocky coast, sandy dunes and mountain top in the south-western part of the island. Within the genus, this species results taxonomically well isolated and differentiated due to relevant morphological and phenological features, such as the leaves wide and short, very rigid and glaucous-pruinose, as well as the very late foliation (winter). It shows only some relationships with C. pancration for the whitish bulb tunics and the diploid chromosome complement, and with C. maura and C. aphylla due to the glaucous leaves.

Cytotoxic Spirostane-Type Saponins from the Roots of Chlorophytum borivilianum

Four new spirostane-type saponins named borivilianosides E-H (1-4) were isolated from an ethanol extract of the roots of Chlorophytum borivilianum together with two known steroid saponins (5 and 6). The structures of 1-4 were elucidated using mainly 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry. The cytotoxicity of borivilianosides F (2), G (3), and H (4) and three known compounds was evaluated using two human colon cancer cell lines (HT-29 and HCT 116).

Impact of anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor configuration on treatment and filterability performance

Abstract Submerged and external anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactors (AnDMBRs) have been compared in terms of removal efficiency, filtration characteristics and microbial community structure. High COD removal efficiencies were obtained with both submerged and external AnDMBRs. To obtain an effective dynamic membrane (DM) layer enabling high quality permeate, longer time was required in the external AnDMBR configuration compared to the submerged one. A difference in microbial community structure was identified using pyrosequencing analyses between the submerged and external AnDMBRs.
