Using the dglars Package to Estimate a Sparse Generalized Linear Model

2015

dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro et al. (J. R. Statist. Soc. B 75(3), 471-498, 2013) developed to study the sparse structure of a generalized linear model (GLM). This method, called dgLARS, is based on a differential geometrical extension of the least angle regression method. The core of the dglars package consists of two algorithms implemented in Fortran 90 to efficiently compute the solution curve. dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro et al. A disintegrin-metalloproteinase prevents amyloid plaque formation and hippocampal defects in an Alzheimer disease mouse model

2004

Alzheimer disease (AD) is characterized by excessive deposition of amyloid beta-peptides (A beta peptides) in the brain. In the nonamyloidogenic pathway, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) is cleaved by the alpha-secretase within the A beta peptide sequence. Proteinases of the ADAM family (adisintegrin and metalloproteinase) are the main candidates as physiologically relevant alpha-secretases, but early lethality of knockout animals prevented a detailed analysis in neuronal cells. To overcome this restriction, we have generated transgenic mice that overexpress either ADAM10 or a catalytically inactive ADAM10 mutant. In this report we show that a moderate neuronal overexpression of ADAM10 i…

The Stock Genetic Structure of Two Sparidae Species, Diplodus vulgaris and Lithognathus mormyrus, in the Mediterranean Sea.

2003

Abstract Polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of allozymes was used to investigate the intraspecies genetic variation and the genetic stock structure of Diplodus vulgaris and Lithognathus mormyrus captured from eight localities in the Mediterranean Sea. Twenty-two and 20 putative enzyme-coding loci were examined, respectively, in D. vulgaris and L. mormyrus . Polymorphic loci at the 95% level were used to assess the allozyme variability in D. vulgaris ( AAT-2 ∗ , EST-1 ∗ , GLDH ∗ , PEPB-2 ∗ , PGI-2 ∗ , PGM ∗ , SDH ∗ ) and L. mormyrus ( AAT-2 ∗ , EST-1 ∗ , GLDH ∗ , MDH-2 ∗ , PGI-2 ∗ , PGM ∗ ). The proportion of polymorphic loci in both species ranged from 0.31 ( D. vulgaris ) to 0.30 ( …

Development and characterization of 11 microsatellite markers in the rock sparrow, Petronia petronia

2006

Eleven polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated in the passeriform Petronia petronia using the enrichment protocol FIASCO (fast isolation by AFLP of sequences containing repeats). We detected three to 13 alleles per locus in 25 specimens collected from an Italian population. The level of expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.439 to 0.856. One locus is sex linked to the Z chromosome. The total exclusionary probabilities using these loci for the first and the second parent were 0.978 and 0.999, respectively. These are the first microsatellite loci characterized from the rock sparrow that can be used for estimating population structure and for large-scale parentage analysis.

Selective phenotyping, entropy reduction, and the mastermind game.

2011

Abstract Background With the advance of genome sequencing technologies, phenotyping, rather than genotyping, is becoming the most expensive task when mapping genetic traits. The need for efficient selective phenotyping strategies, i.e. methods to select a subset of genotyped individuals for phenotyping, therefore increases. Current methods have focused either on improving the detection of causative genetic variants or their precise genomic location separately. Results Here we recognize selective phenotyping as a Bayesian model discrimination problem and introduce SPARE (Selective Phenotyping Approach by Reduction of Entropy). Unlike previous methods, SPARE can integrate the information of p…

Connecting Granular and Topological Relations through Description Logics

2021

Granularity deals with organizing in greater or lesser detail data, information, and knowledge that resides at a granular level. This organization is carried out according to certain criteria, which thereby provide a context view or dimension also called granular perspective. Topological relations express spatial associations among geospatial features (points, polylines, and polygons); they represent a horizontal spatial analysis. The two domains allow scientists to conceive different perspectives of the world. In this article, we aim to combine the two representations through Description Logics (DL) rules to relate granular (vertical representation) and geospatial topological (horizontal r…

Film Tourism – Locations Are the New Stars

2009

There once was a time when the actual attraction of a movie lied in the capability of the celluloid to let the spectators escape from the everyday, a spare time to leave the life-world environment behind and live the life of a thrilling armchair traveller. Foreign countries and remote regions could easily be mapped and visited without travelling to the actual location. Considering that “the modern world is very much a ‘seen’ phenomenon“ (Jenks 1995:2), one has to come to the assumption that present day travelling and watching movies are somehow connected. Tourism originally was perceived as visitors travelling, whether within their own country or internationally, for pleasure and relaxation…

Basaltic Rocks Analyzed by the Spirit Rover in Gusev Crater

2004

The Spirit landing site in Gusev Crater on Mars contains dark, fine-grained, vesicular rocks interpreted as lavas. Pancam and Mini–Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) spectra suggest that all of these rocks are similar but have variable coatings and dust mantles. Magnified images of brushed and abraded rock surfaces show alteration rinds and veins. Rock interiors contain ≤25% megacrysts. Chemical analyses of rocks by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer are consistent with picritic basalts, containing normative olivine, pyroxenes, plagioclase, and accessory FeTi oxides. Mössbauer, Pancam, and Mini-TES spectra confirm the presence of olivine, magnetite, and probably pyroxene. The…

Microsurgical testis-sparing surgery in small testicular masses: seven years retrospective management and results

2012

OBJECTIVE To retrospectively evaluate the clinical outcomes of 20 patients diagnosed with a nonpalpable or small testicular mass (2 cm) at 2 academic urological department. Testis-sparing surgery (TSS) is currently performed routinely for the management of nonpalpable testicular masses. High reliability of frozen section examination (FSE) and high-frequency ultrasound (US) and the adoption of microsurgical techniques improved safety and feasibility of this technique.METHODS From January 2004 to March 2011, 23 patients underwent microsurgical TSS. An inguinal approach was performed in 22 cases and a suprapubic incision in one bilateral case. All procedures were performed with an operating mi…
