Field estimation in wireless sensor networks using distributed kriging

In this paper, we tackle the problem of spatial interpolation for distributed estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks by using a geostatistical technique called kriging. We present a novel Distributed Iterative Kriging Algorithm (DIKA) which is composed of two main phases. First, the spatial dependence of the field is exploited by calculating semivariograms in an iterative way. Second, the kriging system of equations is solved by an initial set of nodes in a distributed manner, providing some initial interpolation weights to each node. Hedging of Spatial Temperature Risk with Market-Traded Futures

The main objective of this work is to construct optimal temperature futures from available market-traded contracts to hedge spatial risk. Temperature dynamics are modelled by a stochastic differential equation with spatial dependence. Optimal positions in market-traded futures minimizing the variance are calculated. Examples with numerical simulations based on a fast algorithm for the generation of random fields are presented.

Conditional autoregressive distributions are commonly used to model spatial dependence between nearby geographic units in disease mapping studies. These distributions induce spatial dependence by means of a spatial weights matrix that quantifies the strength of dependence between any two neighboring spatial units. The most common procedure for defining that spatial weights matrix is using an adjacency criterion. In that case, all pairs of spatial units with adjacent borders are given the same weight (typically 1) and the remaining non-adjacent units are assigned a weight of 0. Neutron-skin effect in direct-photon and charged hadron-production in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

A well-established observation in nuclear physics is that in neutron-rich spherical nuclei the distribution of neutrons extends farther than the distribution of protons. In this work, we scrutinize the influence of this so called neutron-skin effect on the centrality dependence of high-$p_{\rm T}$ direct-photon and charged-hadron production. We find that due to the estimated spatial dependence of the nuclear parton distribution functions, it will be demanding to unambiguously expose the neutron-skin effect with direct photons. The convergence of European regions has been largely discussed in the empirical literature during the last decade. Two observations are often emphasized. First, the convergence rate among European regions appears to be very slow (Barro and Sala-i-Martins 1991, 1995; Armstrong 1995, Sala-i-Martin 1996a,b). Global analysis of nuclear PDFs – latest developments

Abstract In this review talk I discuss the latest developments in the DGLAP-based global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), focusing on the recent EPS09, nCTEQ and DSSZ global fits. I also briefly review the recent analysis for assigning a spatial dependence to the globally analysed nPDFs, resulting in the new sets EPS09s and EKS98s (“s” for spatial). With these, one can now compute nuclear hard-process cross sections and estimate their nPDF-originating uncertainties in different centrality classes for the first time consistently with the global nPDF fits.
Neutron-skin effect and centrality dependence of high-pT observables in nuclear collisions

We report on our studies of the neutron-skin effects in high-pT observables at the LHC. We study the impact of the neutron-skin effect on the centrality dependence of inclusive direct photon, highpT hadron and W± production in nuclear collisions at the LHC. The neutron-skin effect refers to the observation that in spherical heavy nuclei, the tail of the neutron distribution extends farther than the distribution of protons, which can affect observables sensitive to electroweak phenomena in very peripheral collisions. Extracting the impact parameter dependence of the nPDFs from the EKS98 and EPS09 global fits

As all the globally fitted nuclear PDFs (nPDFs) have been so far impact parameter independent, it has not been possible to calculate the hard process cross sections in different centrality classes consistently with the global analyses. In \cite{Helenius:2012wd} we have offered a solution to this problem by determining two spatially dependent nPDF sets, \texttt{EPS09s} and \texttt{EKS98s}, using the $A$-systematics of the earlier global fits EPS09 and EKS98 and an assumption that the spatial dependence can be written as a power series of the nuclear thickness function.
