Through-focus response of multifocal intraocular lenses evaluated with a spatial light modulator

2012

A new testing technique based on the use of a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is proposed to analyze the optical quality of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs). Different vergences and decentrations of the incident beam can be programmed onto the SLM in order to record the point spread function (PSF) for different object positions. From these axial PSFs, the through-focus modulation transfer function is computed. Because there are no moving parts in the experimental setup, this method is fast and versatile to assess MIOLs. Experimental results confirm the potential of the proposed method.

Optical retarder system with programmable spectral retardance.

2014

An optical system that works as a retarder waveplate with programmable spectral retardance is proposed. The system is based on a pixelated liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM). The input light beam is spectrally dispersed and different spectral components are projected onto different pixels of the LCoS-SLM. A different retardance is then addressed for each pixel, adapted to the incoming wavelength. Light reflected from the SLM is then recombined by the same setup. In this way a programmable polarization spectrum can be encoded. We illustrate the broadband characterization that is required for proper use of the system. Then several examples are shown, including spec…

Single-channel polychromatic pattern recognition by the use of a joint-transform correlator.

2010

We present a single-channel system for color image recognition that is based on a joint-transform correlator setup. The color images are encoded as phase and amplitude functions, inspired from the Munsell color representation. A real-time implementation of the new codification method can be achieved by the use of a spatial light modulator operating in phase-only modulation mode. We determine the optimal codification for a linear color-phase code. Its performance is compared with a conventional multichannel correlator by means of computer simulations. Experimental results are also presented.

Dispersion management in two-photon microscopy by using diffractive optical elements.

2013

We demonstrate efficient generation of wide-field fluorescence signals in two-photon microscopy exploiting diffractive optical elements and short pulses by using a dispersion-compensated beam delivery optics module. Computer-generated holograms are codified onto a phase-only spatial light modulator, which allows for arbitrary single-shot patterning of the sample. Spatiotemporal shaping of the pulse is mandatory to overcome spatial chirp and pulse-front tilt effects that spread both in space and time the irradiance patterns, thus limiting not only the spatial resolution but also the signal-to-noise ratio in two-photon microscopy. By using a multipass amplifier delivering 30 fs, 0.8 mJ pulses…

Dynamical binary modulation of ultrabroadband light beams by using principal states of polarization of liquid crystal devices

2009

Dynamical modulation of ultrabroadband beams, such as those produced by femtosecond laser or incoherent sources, is not an easy task due to the dispersive nature of the devices commonly employed. Phase modulation has been performed by means of deformable micromirror arrays. These devices are expensive and do not permit amplitude modulation. For micro- and nano-structuring of materials with femtosecond lasers is common to pattern the surface with the light irradiance produced by a computer generated hologram implemented onto a liquid crystal (LC) type spatial light modulator. This enables dynamical patterning [1,2]. Reduced spectral bandwidths, of the order of tens of nanometers, have been u…

Super Resolution Methods Implementing Diffractive Masks Having a Certain Degree of Periodicity

2011

This section presents an approach that provides super resolved imaging at the center of the field of view and yet allows to see the remaining of the original field of view with original resolution. This operation resembles optical zooming while the zoomed and the nonzoomed images are obtained simultaneously. This is obtained by taking a single snap-shot and using a single imaging lens. The technique utilizes a special static/still coding element and a postprocessing algorithmic, without any mechanical movements.

Dynamic wavefront sensing and correction with low-cost twisted nematic spatial light modulators

2010

Off-the-shelf spatial light modulators (SLMs), like twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TNLCDs) used in projection systems, show some interesting features such as high spatial resolution, easy handling, wide availability, and low cost. We describe a compact adaptive optical system using just one TNLCD to measure and compensate optical aberrations. The current system operates at a frame rate of the order of 10 Hz with a four-level codification scheme. Wavefront estimation is performed through conventional Hartmann–Shack sensing architecture. The system has proved to work properly with a maximum rms aberration of 0. 76 μm and wavefront gradient of 50 rad/mm at a wavelength of 514 nm. The…

Phase-shifting Gabor holography.

2009

We present a modified Gabor-like setup able to recover the complex amplitude distribution of the object wavefront from a set of inline recorded holograms. The proposed configuration is characterized by the insertion of a condenser lens and a spatial light modulator (SLM) into the classical Gabor configuration. The phase shift is introduced by the SLM that modulates the central spot (dc term) in an intermediate plane, without an additional reference beam. Experimental results validate the proposed method and produce superior results to the Gabor method.

Spatial light modulator phase mask implementation of wavefront encoded 3D computational-optical microscopy

2015

Spatial light modulator (SLM) implementation of wavefront encoding enables various types of engineered pointspread functions (PSFs), including the generalized-cubic and squared-cubic phase mask wavefront encoded (WFE) PSFs, shown to reduce the impact of sample-induced spherical aberration in fluorescence microscopy. This investigation validates dynamic experimental parameter variation of these WFE-PSFs. We find that particular design parameter bounds exist, within which the divergence of computed and experimental WFE-PSFs is of the same order of magnitude as that of computed and experimental conventional PSFs, such that model-based approaches for solving the inverse imaging problem can be a…

Superresolved common-path phase-shifting digital inline holographic microscopy using a spatial light modulator.

2012

Common-path phase-shifting lensless holographic microscopy has been recently proposed as a novel approach capable of high numerical aperture imaging in a lensless digital inline holographic microscopy layout [Opt. Lett.35, 3919 (2010)]. Here we present proof-of-concept validation for improving the resolution limit imposed by diffraction in such a setup. This is accomplished by shifting the phase lens displayed at the spatial light modulator, which moves the illumination point source to different off-axis positions. For each off-axis position, a set of inline phase-shifted holograms are recorded by the digital sensor and stored at the computer’s memory for later digital postprocessing. As a …
