The Active Nature of the Soul in Sense Perception: Robert Kilwardby and Peter Olivi

This article discusses the theories of perception of Robert Kilwardby and Peter of John Olivi. Our aim is to show how in challenging certain assumptions of medieval Aristotelian theories of perception they drew on Augustine and argued for the active nature of the soul in sense perception. For both Kilwardby and Olivi, the soul is not passive with respect to perceived objects; rather, it causes its own cognitive acts with respect to external objects and thus allows the subject to perceive them. Particulate matter is associated with different human diseases affecting organs such as the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Very small particles (nanoparticles) have been shown to be rapidly internalized into the body. Since the sites of internalization and the location of the detected particles are often far apart, a distribution via the blood stream must have occurred. Thus, endothelial cells, which line the inner surface of blood vessels, must have had direct contact with the particles. Abstract The aim of this study was to unravel the relative role played by speleogenesis (i.e., the process in which a cave is formed), landscape‐scale variables, and geophysical factors in the determination of species richness in caves. Per la notevole biodiversità del patrimonio vegetale e per le numerose Civiltà susseguitesi nel corso della storia, la Sicilia è un’area di particolare interesse per gli aspetti etnobotanici. L’indagine, condotta nel biennio 2007/2008, ha riguardato le specie vegetali, prevalentemente erbacee e arbustive, riconosciute dalla tradizione popolare e impiegate per diversi usi: alimentare, cosmetico, medicinale, veterinario, artigianale, ornamentale.
