?-Carboline binding indicates the presence of benzodiazepine receptor subclasses in the bovine central nervous system
1982
Receptor binding studies were performed with tritiated propyl β-carboline-3-carboxylate ([3H]PrCC), tritiated ethyl β-carboline-3-carboxylate ([3H]ECC), and tritiated flunitrazepam ([3H]FNT) in membrane preparations from different regions of the bovine brain and retina. Specific binding in all regions investigated was associated with benzodiazepine receptor sites. However, not all benzodiazepine receptor sites. However, not all benzodiazepine receptors in the regions investigated as determined by the specific binding of tritiated flunitrazepam ([3H]FNT) are available for [3H]PrCC suggesting that specific [3H]PrCC binding labels only one subclass or subpopulation of the benzodiazepine recept…
Concentric and/or Eccentric Training-Induced Alterations in Shoulder Flexor and Extensor Strength
1997
To examine the effect of specific concentric and eccentric training on muscular strength following an initial standardized period of excessive training, shoulder extensors and flexors were tested. The shoulder is a joint particularly susceptible to injury and requires a specific strength training program. For a period of 12 weeks, subjects performed training, including concentric and eccentric actions. Thereafter, they were divided into three groups that performed specific 12-week programs, including either concentric (C-E/C), eccentric (C-E/E), or a combination of both concentric and eccentric exercises (C-E/C-E). Following the initial period of training, significant increases (p0.05) in p…
The metabolism and availability of essential fatty acids in animal and human tissues.
1994
Essential fatty acids (EFA), which are not synthesized in animal and human tissues, belong to the n-6 and n-3 families of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), derived from linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (LNA, 18:3n-3). Optimal requirements are 3-6% of ingested energy for LA and 0.5-1% for LNA in adults. Requirements in LNA are higher in development. Dietary sources of LA and LNA are principally plants, while arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) is found in products from terrestrian animals, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are found in products from marine animals. EFA are principally present in dietary triacylglycerols, which should be hydrolyze…
Tachykinin-, calcitonin gene-related peptide-, and protein gene product 9.5-immunoreactive nerve fibers in alveolar walls of mammals.
1991
The presence and distribution of the presumed pan-neural marker protein gene product 9.5 (PGP)- and peptide-immunoreactive (ir) nerve fibers in alveolar walls of various species was investigated by light microscopic single and double staining immunohistochemistry. PGP-, tachykinin (TK)-, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CRGP)-ir fibers were sparsely distributed in a similar pattern in alveolar walls of all species investigated. No vasoactive intestinal peptide-, peptide histidine isoleucine-, galanin-, and opioid-ir nerve fibers could be detected. PGP-ir fibers outnumbered those staining for TKs and CGRP. There was partial coexistence of PGP and TK as well as of TK and CRGP. PGP-, TK-, …
Effects on lipoprotein subclasses of combined expression of human hepatic lipase and human apoB in transgenic rabbits
2003
Objective— The effects of combined expression of human hepatic lipase (HL) and human apolipoprotein B (apoB) on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) subclasses were examined in rabbits, a species naturally deficient in HL activity. Methods and Results— In apoB-transgenic rabbit plasma, >80% of the protein was found in the 1.006- to 1.050-g/mL fraction. Gradient gel electrophoresis (GGE) of this fraction revealed two distinct species, designated large and small LDL. A denser fraction (d=1.050 to 1.063 g/mL) contained small LDL as well as another discrete LDL subspecies, designated very small LDL. Expression of HL resulted in reductions in protein concentrations in the 1.006- to 1.050-g/mL densi…
Role of virtopsy in the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning.
2014
Purpose: Due to admitted limits of autopsy-based studies in the diagnosis of drowning, virtopsy is considered the new imaging horizon in these post-mortem studies. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of virtopsy performed through computed tomography (CT) in the forensic diagnosis of drowning. Materials and methods: We retrospectively examined the CT data of four cadavers recovered from sea water and suspected to have died by drowning. Each patient underwent a full-body post-mortem CT scan, and then a traditional autopsy. Conclusion: To date, there are no autopsy findings pathognomonic of drowning. This study proves that virtopsy is a useful tool in the diagnosis of drowning in tha…
Are licensed canine parvovirus (CPV2 and CPV2b) vaccines able to elicit protection against CPV2c subtype in puppies?: A systematic review of controll…
2015
Severe gastroenteritis caused by canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2) is a serious life-threatening disease in puppies less than 4-months of age. The emergence of new variants has provoked some concern about the cross-protection elicited by licensed canine parvovirus modified-live type 2 (CPV2) and type 2b (CPV2b) vaccines against the most recent subtype CPV2c. A systematic review was carried out to assess the efficacy of commercial vaccines. We conducted a literature search of Pub Med/MEDLINE from January 1990 to May 2014. This was supplemented by hand-searching of related citations and searches in Google/Google Scholar. Controlled clinical trials in which vaccinated puppies were challenged wit…
EFSUMB Guidelines 2011: Comment on Emergent Indications and Visions
2012
The focus of this article is the emergent and potential indications of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Emergent applications of CEUS techniques include extravascular and intracavitary contrast-enhanced ultrasound, quantitative assessment of microvascular circulation for tumor response assessment, and tumor characterization using dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US). Potential indications for microbubble agents include novel molecular imaging and drug and gene delivery techniques, which have been successfully tested in animal models. "Comments and Illustrations of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) Non-Liver Guidelines 2011" whi…
Targetoid appearance on T2-weighted imaging and signs of tumor vascular involvement: diagnostic value for differentiating HCC from other primary live…
2021
To evaluate targetoid appearance on T2-weighted imaging and signs of tumor vascular involvement as potential new LI-RADS features for differentiating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from other non-HCC primary liver carcinomas (PLCs). This IRB-approved, retrospective study was performed at two liver transplant centers. The final population included 375 patients with pathologically proven lesions imaged between 2007 and 2017 with contrast-enhanced CT or MRI. The cohort consisted of 165 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas and 74 combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinomas, with the addition of 136 HCCs for control. Two abdominal radiologists (R1; R2) independently reviewed the imaging studies (112…
Are double potentials markers of a specific zone of the atrioventricular junction in the isolated rabbit heart?
1997
A study is made of the characteristics of the atrial potentials recorded in the Koch triangle and its proximity, their variations on modifying the site of cardiac pacing, and their usefulness as markers of a distinct zone of the AV junction. In 12 isolated and perfused rabbit heart preparations an analysis was made of the endocardial atrial electrograms recorded with a multiple electrode positioned in the AV junction. The electrograms were obtained during spontaneous rhythm and on pacing at the crista terminalis (CT), interatrial septum (IAS), left atrium, and right ventricle. Double potentials were frequently obtained. On pacing at the CT, high-low double potentials (DP [H-L]) were more fr…
