Fundamental properties and atmospheric structure of the red supergiant VY CMa based on VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometry

2012

We investigate the atmospheric structure and fundamental properties of the red supergiant VY CMa. We obtained near-infrared spectro-interferometric observations of VY CMa with spectral resolutions of 35 and 1500 using the AMBER instrument at the VLTI. The visibility data indicate the presence of molecular layers of water vapor and CO in the extended atmosphere with an asymmetric morphology. The uniform disk diameter in the water band around 2.0 mu is increased by \sim20% compared to the near-continuum bandpass at 2.20-2.25 mu and in the CO band at 2.3-2.5 mu it is increased by up to \sim50%. The closure phases indicate relatively small deviations from point symmetry close to the photospheri…

OCTOCAM: A fast multichannel imager and spectrograph for the 10.4m GTC

2010

OCTOCAM is a multi-channel imager and spectrograph that has been proposed for the 10.4m GTC telescope. It will use dichroics to split the incoming light to produce simultaneous observations in 8 different bands, ranging from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared. The imaging mode will have a field of view of 2' x 2' in u, g, r, i, z, J, H and Ks bands, whereas the long-slit spectroscopic mode will cover the complete range from 4,000 to 23,000 {\AA} with a resolution of 700 - 1,700 (depending on the arm and slit width). An additional mode, using an image slicer, will deliver a spectral resolution of over 3,000. As a further feature, it will use state of the art detectors to reach high readout…

A ionized reflecting skin above the accretion disk of GX 349+2

2009

The broad emission features in the Fe-Kalpha region of X-ray binary spectra represent an invaluable probe to constrain the geometry and the physics of these systems. Several Low Mass X-ray binary systems (LMXBs) containing a neutron star (NS) show broad emission features between 6 and 7 keV and most of them are nowi nterpreted as reflection features from the inner part of an accretion disk in analogy to those observed in the spectra of X-ray binary systems containing a Black Hole candidate. The NS LMXB GX 349+2 was observed by the XMM-Newton satellite which allows, thanks to its high effective area and good spectral resolution between 6 and 7 keV, a detailed spectroscopic study of the Fe-Ka…

The European Photon Imaging Camera on XMM-Newton: The MOS Cameras

2000

The EPIC focal plane imaging spectrometers on XMM-Newton use CCDs to record the images and spectra of celestial X-ray sources focused by the three X-ray mirrors. There is one camera at the focus of each mirror; two of the cameras contain seven MOS CCDs, while the third uses twelve PN CCDs, defining a circular field of view of 30 arcmin diameter in each case. The CCDs were specially developed for EPIC, and combine high quality imaging with spectral resolution close to the Fano limit. A filter wheel carrying three kinds of X-ray transparent light blocking filter, a fully closed, and a fully open position, is fitted to each EPIC instrument. The CCDs are cooled passively and are under full clos…

Silicon Oxysulfide, OSiS: Rotational Spectrum, Quantum-Chemical Calculations, and Equilibrium Structure.

2011

Silicon oxysulfide, OSiS, and seven of its minor isotopic species have been characterized for the first time in the gas phase at high spectral resolution by means of Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The equilibrium structure of OSiS has been determined from the experimental data using calculated vibration-rotation interaction constants. The structural parameters (rO-Si = 1.5064 A and rSi-S = 1.9133 A) are in very good agreement with values from high-level quantum chemical calculations using coupled-cluster techniques together with sophisticated additivity and extrapolation schemes. The bond distances in OSiS are very short in comparison with those in SiO and SiS. This unexpected fi…

VLTI/AMBER observations of cold giant stars: atmospheric structures and fundamental parameters

2014

The main goal of this research is to determine the angular size and the atmospheric structures of cool giant stars and to compare them with hydrostatic stellar model atmospheres, to estimate the fundamental parameters, and to obtain a better understanding of the circumstellar environment. We conducted spectro-interferometric observations of epsilon Oct, beta Peg, NU Pav, and psi Peg in the near-infrared K band (2.13-2.47 microm), and gamma Hya (1.9-2.47 microm) with the VLTI/AMBER instrument at medium spectral resolution. To obtain the fundamental parameters, we compared our data with hydrostatic atmosphere models (PHOENIX). We estimated the Rosseland angular diameters of epsilon Oct, beta …

SpecTrap: precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions—status and prospects

2013

We present the status of the SpecTrap experiment currently being commissioned in the framework of the HITRAP project at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. SpecTrap is a cryogenic Penning trap experiment dedicated to high-accuracy laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions (HCI) near rest. Determination of fine structure and hyperfine structure splittings in HCI with an expected relative spectral resolution of 10−7 will offer the possibility to test quantum electrodynamics in strong fields with unprecedented accuracy. Recently, we have demonstrated trapping and laser Doppler cooling of singly charged magnesium ions in SpecTrap. We report on the status of the experimental apparatus, measurements and pre…

Modeling the energy thermalization of X-ray photons in a microcalorimeter with superconducting absorber

2003

We present a modeling of the response of a microcalorimeter to the absorption of X-ray photons, based on the main microscopical processes responsible for the energy thermalization. In particular, we have modeled a microcalorimeter with superconducting tin absorber (350 micron x 350 micron x 7 micron) and neutron transmutation doped (NTD) germanium thermistor (75 micron x 50 micron x 150 micron). Such a detector, operated at 60 mK, is expected to achieve a spectral resolution as good as 1 eV FWHM in the soft X-ray energy range, based on the known sources of thermal and electronic noise. Nevertheless, the best spectral resolution measured in laboratory experimental tests is of about 5 eV FWHM…

Weak Flares on M-Dwarfs

2010

We have investigated the physics of flares in M-dwarfs by means of optical/X-ray observations and modeling. The great efficiency of current optical spectrographs and detectors has allowed us to detect and analyze a great number of non white-light flares with intermediate spectral resolution and high temporal resolution. Although this kind of flares is the most typical on the Sun, few such events have been so far recorded on stars. We have obtained the physical parameters of the chromospheric flaring plasma (electron temperature, electron density, optical depth and temperature of the underlying source) by using a model that minimizes the difference between the observed Balmer decrements and …
