A supervised learning framework of statistical shape and probability priors for automatic prostate segmentation in ultrasound images

2013

Prostate segmentation aids in prostate volume estimation, multi-modal image registration, and to create patient specific anatomical models for surgical planning and image guided biopsies. However, manual segmentation is time consuming and suffers from inter-and intra-observer variabilities. Low contrast images of trans rectal ultrasound and presence of imaging artifacts like speckle, micro-calcifications, and shadow regions hinder computer aided automatic or semi-automatic prostate segmentation. In this paper, we propose a prostate segmentation approach based on building multiple mean parametric models derived from principal component analysis of shape and posterior probabilities in a multi…

Intravitreal therapies for non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration with intraretinal or subretinal fluid

2017

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal therapies in cases of atrophic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with subretinal or intraretinal fluid. METHODS: A retrospective review was made of the clinical charts of patients diagnosed with atrophic AMD with subretinal or intraretinal fluid. Fundus photographs and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images were examined, and an analysis was made on the presence of fluid and its density. Neovascularisation was ruled out by fluorescein and/or indocyanine green angiography. RESULTS: The study included 14 eyes from 13 patients with a mean age of 72.64 years and a mean follow-up of 80.5 weeks. Intraretinal fluid was observed …

A significant p value is not equivalent to the superiority of one test index over another

2019

Background In patients with septic shock, the skin is often chosen for the evaluation of peripheral perfusion and oxygenation. Changes in skin microcirculatory vessel oxygen saturation and relative hemoglobin concentration can be described using a mottling score or captured with hyperspectral imaging. However, the effectiveness of the mottling score in assessing microcirculation remains to be shown. We hypothesize that the mottling score in patients with septic shock is related to skin microcirculatory perfusion indices quantified by hyperspectral imaging, biomarkers that reflect endothelium activation and damage, and clinical outcome. Methods Hyperspectral imaging of the knee area was perf…

Spectral clustering of shape and probability prior models for automatic prostate segmentation.

2013

Imaging artifacts in Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) images and inter-patient variations in prostate shape and size challenge computer-aided automatic or semi-automatic segmentation of the prostate. In this paper, we propose to use multiple mean parametric models derived from principal component analysis (PCA) of shape and posterior probability information to segment the prostate. In contrast to traditional statistical models of shape and intensity priors, we use posterior probability of the prostate region determined from random forest classification to build, initialize and propagate our model. Multiple mean models derived from spectral clustering of combined shape and appearance parameters…

Structural factors controlling ligand binding to myoglobin: a kinetic hole-burning study.

1998

Using temperature-derivative spectroscopy in the temperature range below 100 K, we have studied the dependence of the Soret band on the recombination barrier in sperm whale carbonmonoxy myoglobin (MbCO) after photodissociation at 12 K. The spectra were separated into contributions from the photodissociated species, Mb*CO, and CO-bound myoglobin. The line shapes of the Soret bands of both photolyzed and liganded myoglobin were analyzed with a model that takes into account the homogeneous bandwidth, coupling of the electronic transition to vibrational modes, and static conformational heterogeneity. The analysis yields correlations between the activation enthalpy for rebinding and the model p…

Delineating margins of lentigo maligna using a hyperspectral imaging system

2014

Lentigo maligna (LM) is an in situ form of melanoma which can progress into invasive lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM). Variations in the pigmentation and thus visibility of the tumour make assessment of lesion borders challenging. We tested hyperspectral imaging system (HIS) in in vivo preoperative delineation of LM and LMM margins. We compared lesion margins delineated by HIS with those estimated clinically, and confirmed histologically. A total of 14 LMs and 5 LMMs in 19 patients were included. HIS analysis matched the histopathological analysis in 18/19 (94.7%) cases while in 1/19 (5.3%) cases HIS showed lesion extension not confirmed by histopathology (false positives). Compared to clinic…

Signal Characteristics of EMG with Special Reference to Reproducibility of Measurements

1975

Reliability and constancy of recordings of EMG signal characteristics were investigated from the measurements taken with miniature size surface electrodes during submaximal and maximal contraction of the rectus femoris muscle. The following EMG variables were studied: integrated EMG (IEMG) various bandwidths of the power spectral density function, mean power frequency (MPF), and rise time, amplitude and number of spikes of the averaged motor unit potential (AMUP). The results indicated that for most of the variables studied the reproducibility of measurements was better within the test session (reliability) than between the different test days (constancy). The reliability values for IEMG, M…

Cerebral haemodynamic changes during propofol-remifentanil or sevoflurane anaesthesia: transcranial Doppler study under bispectral index monitoring

2006

Background. Sevoflurane or propofol–remifentanil-based anaesthetic regimens represent modern techniques for neurosurgical anaesthesia. Nevertheless, there are potential differences related to their activity on the cerebrovascular system. The magnitude of such difference is not completely known. Methods. In total 40 patients, treated for spinal or maxillo-facial disorders, were randomly allocated to either i.v. propofol–remifentanil or inhalational sevoflurane anaesthesia. Transcranial Doppler was used to assess changes in cerebral blood flow velocity, carbon dioxide reactivity, cerebral autoregulation and the bispectral index to assess the depth of anaesthesia. Results. Time-averaged mean f…

Diagnostic Value of Optical Spectral Transmission in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Associations with Clinical Characteristics and Comparison with Joint Ultra…

2020

Objective. To examine the value of optical spectral transmission (OST) in detecting joint inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to evaluate whether OST correlates with certain patient characteristics.Methods.OST measurements were performed in the metacarpophalangeal, proximal intraphalangeal, and wrist joints of 168 patients with RA and 114 controls. OST difference between the 2 groups was statistically examined and subsequently controlled for the effect of possible confounding factors. Diagnostic OST performance was tested by receiver-operating characteristics. Moreover, associations of OST with clinical and serological activity markers (patient group), joint ultrasoun…

Wavelength dependence of the optomotor response in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

2003

Abstract The action spectrum of motion detection in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was measured using the optomotor response in the light adapted state. The function has a single maximum at 550–600 nm, and is similar to the spectral sensitivity function of the L-cone type in the mid and long wavelength range. At shorter wavelengths the values of three of the five fish tested are lower. As in goldfish [Vis. Res. 36 (1996) 4025], the result indicates a dominance of the L-cone type with an inhibitory influence of M- or S-cones. Experiments with a red/green striped cylinder showed that the optomotor response was at minimum whenever the L-cone type was not modulated by the moving pattern. This demonstr…
