Low-energy (anti)neutrino physics with Borexino: Neutrinos from the primary proton-proton fusion process in the Sun

2014

The Sun is fueled by a series of nuclear reactions that produce the energy that makes it shine. The primary reaction is the fusion of two protons into a deuteron, a positron and a neutrino. These neutrinos constitute the vast majority of neutrinos reaching Earth, providing us with key information about what goes on at the core of our star. Several experiments have now confirmed the observation of neutrino oscillations by detecting neutrinos from secondary nuclear processes in the Sun; this is the first direct spectral measurement of the neutrinos from the keystone proton-proton fusion. This observation is a crucial step towards the completion of the spectroscopy of pp-chain neutrinos, as we…

Structure ofIn112nucleus

1988

The \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray spectra of the $^{112}\mathrm{Cd}$(p,n\ensuremath{\gamma}${)}^{112}$In and $^{109}\mathrm{Ag}$(\ensuremath{\alpha},n\ensuremath{\gamma}${)}^{112}$In reactions were measured with Ge(Li) spectrometers for bombarding energies of 4.8 MeV protons and 17.1 MeV \ensuremath{\alpha} particles. The energies and relative intensities of 79 $^{112}\mathrm{In}$ \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray transitions have been determined. The electron spectra were measured with combined magnet plus Si(Li) as well as superconducting magnetic lens plus Si(Li) spectrometers. Internal conversion coefficients of 40 $^{112}\mathrm{In}$ transitions have been determined, and the level scheme of $^{112}\ma…

Nuclear charge radii of the even sulphur isotopesS32,S34, andS36and ofP31using muonic atoms

1985

Energies of muonic x rays of the Lyman series of the even sulphur isotopes /sup 32/S, /sup 34/S, and /sup 36/S and of natural phosphorus have been determined with absolute precisions up to 23 parts/10/sup 6/. Equivalent Barrett charge radii R/sub k/,..cap alpha.. have been deduced. Their differences between the sulphur isotopes amount to ..delta..R/sub k/,..cap alpha..( /sup 34/S- /sup 32/ S) = 29.7(1.4) am and ..delta..R/sub k/,..cap alpha..( /sup 36/S- /sup 34/ S) = 18.7(1.5) am. Combining these results with recent elastic electron scattering data, we obtain in a model-independent way ..delta../sup 1/2/( /sup 34/S- /sup 3/ 2S) = 23.1(1.2) am and ..delta../sup 1/2/( /sup 36/S- /sup 3/ 4S) …

2020

The novel technology of calorimetric low-temperature detectors (CLTDs) was applied to determine isotopic yields of fission fragments using the passive absorber method for thermal-neutron-induced fission reactions at the LOHENGRIN mass spectrometer at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. Precise yields were determined for $^{92}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{96}\mathrm{Y}$. These fission products are the dominant contributors to the high-energy portion of the reactor antineutrino spectra. Our new measurements resolve inconsistencies between previous yield measurements and fission data libraries and reduce the nuclear data uncertainties in the computation of reactor antineutrino spectra by th…

Isotope Distributions in the Reaction ofU238withU238

1978

Radiochemically determined cross sections $\ensuremath{\sigma}(Z, A)$ were used to construct charge and mass distributions for the reaction of 1785-MeV $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ ions with thick $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ targets. Fission of the colliding nuclei is found to dominate. For the surviving uraniumlike fragments an enhancement of yields compared to the Kr + U and Xe + U reactions is observed. The formation of heavy actinides is shown to be associated with the low-energy tails of the broad excitation energy distributions in damped collisions.

High Spin Phenomena in the Mass 100-200 Region Seen Through the Crystal Ball

1983

The average properties of the gamma ray entry region and the decay from it are studied systematically, for 49 nuclear systems, in the spin spectrometer. Preliminary results are given for the mass the neutron number dependence of the gamma ray fold distribution and of unresolved γ spectra. The possibility of gating simultaneously on narrow regions of fold and excitation energy is exploited.

The πd scattering length from Kα X-rays

1974

Abstract X-rays from the K α transition (2P → 1S) of the π − d mesic atom have been observed. Their energy, 2592.8 −2.0 +1.6 , has been measured by the critical absorber technique, using the M V absorption edge in bismuth. The strong interaction shift in the 1S state is −4.8 eV, corresponding to a scattering length a ( π d) = −(0.052 −0.017 +0.022 ) m π −1 , in agreement with recent calculations. The intensity ratio K α /K total = 0.548 ± 0.015.

Solution of controversy over 1583-keV levels inPb204

1989

Data from {sup 204}Pb({ital p},{ital p}{prime}){sup 204}Pb conversion-electron and gamma-ray experiments, together with previous results, prove the existence of two levels (0{sup +} and 2{sup +}) at 1583-keV excitation energy in {sup 204}Pb. Modified values (limits) of the {rho}{sub 21}{sup 2} and {ital X}{sub 211} are 0.0013{lt}{rho}{sub 21}{sup 2}{lt}0.015 and {ital X}{sub 211}{gt}0.073. New experimental evidence indicates that all the three observed excited {ital O}{sup +} states in {sup 204}Pb can be explained as belonging to the four-neutron-hole valence space and, therefore, there is no clear candidate for the proton 2p-2h intruder state in this nucleus.

Excitation functions for production of heavy actinides from interactions ofCa40andCa48ions withCm248

1985

Excitation functions have been measured for production of isotopes of Bk through Fm in bombardments of /sup 248/Cm with 234- to 294-MeV /sup 40/Ca ions and with 239- to 318-MeV /sup 48/Ca ions. The maxima of the isotopic distributions for these elements occur at only 2 to 3 mass numbers larger for /sup 48/Ca than for /sup 40/Ca reactions. The shapes of the distributions and the half-widths of about 2.5 mass numbers are quite similar to those observed previously for reactions of /sup 16/O, /sup 18/O, /sup 20/Ne, and /sup 22/Ne with /sup 248/Cm. In general, the excitation functions for /sup 40/Ca show maxima near the Coulomb barrier while those for /sup 48/Ca are about 20 MeV above the barrie…

Kinematical coincidence method in transfer reactions

2013

A new method to extract high resolution angular distributions from kinematical coincidence measurements in binary reactions is presented. Kinematic is used to extract the center of mass angular distribution from the measured energy spectrum of light particles. Results obtained in the case of 10Be+p-->9Be+d reaction measured with the CHIMERA detector are shown. An angular resolution of few degrees in the center of mass is obtained.
