High Resolution and Broad Band Spectra of Low Mass X-ray Binaries: A Comparison between Black Holes and Neutron Stars

A common question about compact objects in high energy astrophysics is whether it is possible to distinguish black hole from neutron star systems with some other property that is not the mass of the compact object. Up to now a few characteristics have been found which are typical of neutron stars (like quasi periodic oscillations at kHz frequencies or type-I X-ray bursts), but in many respects black hole and neutron star systems show very similar behaviors. Clustering effects in 48Cr composite nucleus produced via the reaction 24Mg + 24Mg at the excitation energy of 60 MeV

The reaction 24Mg + 24Mg was used to produce the composite nucleus 48Cr at 60 MeV of excitation energy where a narrow resonance (170 KeV) has been found by measuring the elastic and inelastic channels. To determine the occurrence of deformation of this compound nucleus and its possible connection with the resonances and the hypothetical cluster structure, evaporative Light Charged Particles (LCP) were measured and compared to Statistical Model (SM) predictions. Revisiting a vector-tensor theory of gravitation

A certain vector-tensor theory of gravitation has been recently studied. In this theory, the zero-order energy density of the vector field could play the role of dark energy. In such a case, the question is: could the theory explain current cosmological observations as well as the so-called concordance model? Previous papers on the subject only consider a reduced number of current observations. We consider a wider set of observations including supernovae of type Ia, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, and the power spectrum of the energy density fluctuations. Results imply that, for negligible scalar perturbations of the vector field, the theory does not work.

HIGH-RESOLUTION FOURIER TRANSFORM SPECTROSCOPY OF LANTHANUM IN Ar DISCHARGE IN THE NEAR-INFRARED

A high-resolution spectrum of lanthanum has been recorded by a Fourier Transform spectrometer in the wavelength range from 833 nm to 1666 nm (6000 cm{sup –1} to 12,000 cm{sup –1}) using as light source a hollow cathode lamp operated with argon as the discharge carrier gas. In total, 2386 spectral lines were detected in this region, of which 555 lines could be classified as La I transitions and 10 lines as La II transitions. All La II transitions and 534 of these La I transitions were classified for the first time, and 6 of the La II transitions and 433 of the classified La I transitions appear to be new lines, which could not be found in the literature. PRECISE LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS OF TRANS-DCOOH AND TRANS-HCOOD FOR ASTROPHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS

The rotational spectra of the mono-deuterated isotopologues of trans-formic acid, trans-DCOOH and trans-HCOOD, were investigated. In the millimeter- and submillimeter-wave frequency regions the Lamb-dip technique was exploited to obtain sub-Doppler resolution and to resolve the hyperfine structure due to the deuterium and hydrogen nuclei, thus enabling the accurate determination of the corresponding hyperfine constants. The experimental determination was supported by high-level quantum-chemical calculations at the coupled-cluster level of theory using large atomic-orbital basis sets. Symmetry and Electronic Structure of Noble Metal Nanoparticles and the Role of Relativity

High resolution photoelectron spectra of cold mass selected Cu_n-, Ag_n- and Au_n- with n =53-58 have been measured at a photon energy of 6.42 eV. The observed electron density of states is not the expected simple electron shell structure, but seems to be strongly influenced by electron-lattice interactions. Only Cu55- and Ag55- exhibit highly degenerate states. This is a direct consequence of their icosahedral symmetry, as is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Neighboring sizes exhibit perturbed electronic structures, as they are formed by removal or addition of atoms to the icosahedron and therefore have lower symmetries. Temperature Distribution of a Non-flaring Active Region from Simultaneous Hinode XRT and EIS Observations

We analyze coordinated Hinode XRT and EIS observations of a non-flaring active region to investigate the thermal properties of coronal plasma taking advantage of the complementary diagnostics provided by the two instruments. In particular we want to explore the presence of hot plasma in non-flaring regions. Independent temperature analyses from the XRT multi-filter dataset, and the EIS spectra, including the instrument entire wavelength range, provide a cross-check of the different temperature diagnostics techniques applicable to broad-band and spectral data respectively, and insights into cross-calibration of the two instruments. Corrigendum: Fabrication and heating rate study of microscopic surface electrode ion traps

We report heating rate measurements in a microfabricated goldon-sapphire surface electrode ion trap with a trapping height of approximately 240 μm. Using the Doppler recooling method, we characterize the trap heating rates over an extended region of the trap. The noise spectral density of the trap falls in the range of noise spectra reported in ion traps at room temperature. We find that during the first months of operation, the heating rates increase by approximately one order of magnitude. The increase in heating rates is largest in the ion-loading region of the trap, providing a strong hint that surface contamination plays a major role for excessive heating rates. Primordial Black Holes and Slow-Roll Violation

For primordial black holes (PBH) to be the dark matter in single-field inflation, the slow-roll approximation must be violated by at least ${\cal O}(1)$ in order to enhance the curvature power spectrum within the required number of efolds between CMB scales and PBH mass scales. Power spectrum predictions which rely on the inflaton remaining on the slow-roll attractor can fail dramatically leading to qualitatively incorrect conclusions in models like an inflection potential and misestimate the mass scale in a running mass model. We show that an optimized temporal evaluation of the Hubble slow-roll parameters to second order remains a good description for a wide range of PBH formation models …

XMM-Newton spectroscopy of the metal depleted T Tauri star TWA 5

We present results of X-ray spectroscopy for TWA 5, a member of the young TW Hydrae association, observed with XMM-Newton. TWA~5 is a multiple system which shows Halpha emission, a signature typical of classical T Tauri stars, but no infrared excess. From the analysis of the RGS and EPIC spectra, we have derived the emission measure distribution vs. temperature of the X-ray emitting plasma, its abundances, and the electron density. The characteristic temperature and density of the plasma suggest a corona similar to that of weak-line T Tauri stars and active late-type main sequence stars.
