Multiphoton One-step Ionization of Helium at 1064 nm
1989
Abstract The multiphoton ionization of helium by a strong radiation field having a wavelength of 1064 nm and a field intensity up to 5 × 1014 W cm −2 is considered within a non-perturbative treatment partially accounting for the electron-electron correlations in the initial bound state and approximately for the Coulomb interaction between the residual ion and the ejected electron in the final state. Only single-electron transitions are considered, the main emphasis being on the field polarization effects. The obtained results are compared with the few results available in the literature in the same regime as well as with very recent experimental findings. In particular, the calculated photo…
The use of the integral-bias summing coincidence spectrometer in directional correlation measurements
1968
Abstract The performance of the integral-bias summing coincidence spectrometer (the sum-peak spetrometer) in measurements of directional correlations of gamma rays has been tested. As compared with the conventional method, the sum-peak spectrometer is easier to use and seems to yield results which agree with those obtained with the ordinary method. Because of the complex shapes of response functions of gamma rays above about 3 MeV, the new method is best suited to the study of cascading transitions below this energy, where the two methods appear to complement each other. The analysis of the sum-peak spectra in the present work is based on a simple graphical method which seems to yield satis…
Element-specific magnetic moments and spin-resolved density of states in CoFeMnZ(Z=Al, Ga; Si, Ge)
2011
Using circular dichroism in x-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS/XMCD), we determined element-specific magnetic moments and spin-resolved unoccupied densities of states (DOS) for Co, Fe, and Mn in the quaternary Heusler compounds CoFeMn$Z$ ($Z=\text{Al}$, Ga; Si, Ge). These compounds belong to a class of highly spin-polarized materials with cubic LiMgPdSn-type structure. Different structure models for the sublattice occupation leading to similar average magnetization values can be distinguished by comparison of element-specific moments with theory. We find that the compounds form similar structures, where Co, Fe, Mn, and $Z$ occupy the $X$, ${X}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, $Y$, and $Z$ sublattice of t…
The Sax Mission for X-Ray Astronomy
1990
The satellite for X-ray astronomy SAX, to be launched at the end of 1993, is devoted to systematic, integrated and comprehensive, studies of galactic and extra-galactic sources in the energy band 0.1–200 keV, and is under joint development by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace programs (NIVR), with the participation of SRU/SRON and SSD/ESTEC. The basic scientific objectives can be summarized as follows: — Broad band spectroscopy (E/△ E=12) from 0.1–10 keV with imaging resolution of 1 arcmin. — Continuum and line spectroscopy (E/△ E=5-20) in the energy range 3–200 keV. — Variability studies of bright source energy spectra on timescales from milliseconds t…
X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy with NTD germanium-based microcalorimeters
2002
We report on the performance of our NTD-Ge microcalorimeters. To date, the spectral resolution for x-ray and gamma-ray lines from radioactive sources and laboratory plasmas is 4.8 eV in the entire 1 - 6 keV band and 52 eV at 60 keV. Technical details responsible for this performance are presented as well as an innovative electro-thermal approach for enhancing count-rate capability.
A Preliminary Analysis of a New Chandra Observation (ObsID 6148) of Cir X-1
2008
We present the preliminary spectral analysis of a 25 ks long Chandra observation of the peculiar source Cir X–1 near the periastron passage. We estimate more precise coordinates of the source compatible with the optical and radio counterpart coordinates. We detect emission lines associated to Mg XII, Si XIII, Si XIV, S XV, S XVI Ar XVII, Ar XVIII, Ca XIX, Ca XX, Fe XXV, Fe XXVI showing a redshift of 470 km s−1. The more intense emission features at 6.6 keV show a double‐peaked shape that can be modelled with two or three Gaussian lines.
The BeppoSAX 0.1–18 keV spectrum of the bright atoll source GX 9+1: an indication of the source distance
2005
We report the results of a long, 350 ks, BeppoSAX observation of the bright atoll source GX 9+1 in the 0.12-18 keV energy range. During this observation GX 9+1 showed a large count rate variability in its lightcurve. From its color-color diagram we selected six zones and extracted the source energy spectrum from each zone. We find that the model, composed of a blackbody plus a Comptonized component absorbed by an equivalent hydrogen column of ~1.4 ¿ 1022 cm-2, fits the spectra in the energy range 1-18 keV well; however, below 1 keV a soft excess is present. We find that the spectrum of GX 9+1, in the 0.12-18 keV energy range, is well fitted by the model above, if we use an equivalent hydrog…
High-Energy pulse profile of the Transient X-ray Pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545
2005
In two recent INTEGRAL papers, Lutovinov et al. (2003) and Blay et al. (2004) report a timing and spectral analysis of the transient Be/X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545 at high energies (5--200 keV). In this work we present for the first time a study of the pulse profile at energies above 20 keV using INTEGRAL data. The spin-pulse profile shows a prominent (with a duty cycle of 14%) and broad (with a FWHM of ~ 51 s) peak and a secondary peak which becomes more evident above 20 keV. The pulsed fraction increases with energy from ~ 45% at 5--40 keV to ~ 80% at 40--80 keV. The morphology of the pulse profile also changes as a function of energy, consistent with variations in the spectral componen…
An X-shooter survey of star forming regions: Low-mass stars and sub-stellar objects
2011
We present preliminary results of our X-shooter survey in star forming regions. In this contribution we focus on sub-samples of young stellar and sub-stellar objects (YSOs) in the Lupus star forming region and in the TW Hya association. We show that the X-shooter spectra are suitable for conducting several parallel studies such as YSO + disk fundamental parameters, accretion and outflow activity in the very low-mass (VLM) and sub-stellar regimes, as well as magnetic activity in young VLM YSOs, and Li abundance determinations. The capabilities of X-shooter in terms of wide spectral coverage, resolution and limiting magnitudes, allow us to assess simultaneously the accretion/outflow, magnetic…
Bose condensates at high angular momenta
2000
We exploit the analogy with the Quantum Hall (QH) system to study weakly interacting bosons in a harmonic trap. For a $\delta$-function interaction potential the ``yrast'' states with $L\ge N(N-1)$ are degenerate, and we show how this can be understood in terms of Haldane exclusion statistics. We present spectra for 4 and 8 particles obtained by numerical and algebraic methods, and demonstrate how a more general hard-core potential lifts the degeneracies on the yrast line. The exact wavefunctions for N=4 are compared with trial states constructed from composite fermions (CF), and the possibility of using CF-states to study the low L region at high N is discussed.
