Electronic structure of single-crystal rocksalt CdO studied by soft x-ray spectroscopies andab initiocalculations

Soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) are employed to investigate the occupied and unoccupied electronic structures in rocksalt-phase single-crystal CdO. Resonant XES at the OK edge reveals a clear Cd 4d-O 2p hybridized peak and momentum-dependent coherent contributions to the resonant emission spectra. Good agreement is obtained between the above-threshold XES and XAS spectra, and the calculated O 2p local partial density of states (PDOS). Calculation of the O 2p PDOS was performed within the GW framework of many-body perturbation theory.

XANES and EXAFS modelling of configurational disorder in silver borate glasses

The sensitivity of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to the local structure around a selected atomic species (symmetry, distances and angles) is commonly exploited to quantitatively describe systems where all the configurations around the absorbing atoms may be approximated by the mean one. However, in many cases of disordered systems a simple description of the local structure with singleconfiguration models cannot be reconciled with experimental spectra. The relative stability of trans-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2 (trans-I) and cis-I tautomers in a vacuum and in solvents with different dielectric constants (e) has been investigated by exploiting density functional theory (DFT). Theoretical results indicate that, in agreement with experimental evidence, trans-I is more stable than cis-I in a vacuum (∼1.5 kcal mol−1; e = 1), while the opposite is true in media with e > 7. Differently from solution, DFT outcomes pertaining to the vapor-phase cis-I ⇆ trans-I equilibrium at T = 368 K, the temperature at which the Fe L2,3-edges and the C and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data of I have been recorded, ultimately indicate the trans-I …

Wavelet data analysis of EXAFS spectra

Abstract The application of wavelet transform to the analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) from perovskite-type compounds is presented on the example of the Re L 3 -edge in ReO 3 and Co K-edge in LaCoO 3 . We propose a modified wavelet transform procedure, which allows better discrimination of the overlapped contributions into the EXAFS signal.

Broadband observations of the X-ray burster 4U1705-44 with Beppo SAX

4U 1705-44 is one of the most-studied type I X-ray burster and Atoll sources. This source represents a perfect candidate to test different models proposed to self-consistently track the physical changes occurring between different spectral states because it shows clear spectral state transitions. The broadband coverage, the sensitivity and energy resolution of the BeppoSAX satellite offers the opportunity to disentangle the components that form the total X-ray spectrum and to study their changes according to the spectral state. Collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy

The progress in atomic and molecular spectroscopy has gone hand in hand with improvements of the resolution. The LOFT mission concept: a status update

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. INTEGRAL long-term monitoring of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient XTE J1739-302

In the past few years, a new class of High Mass X-Ray Binaries (HMXRB) has been claimed to exist, the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT). These are X-ray binary systems with a compact companion orbiting a supergiant star which show very short and bright outbursts in a series of activity periods overimposed on longer quiescent periods.
