X-ray binaries in outburst typically show two canonical X-ray spectral states, i.e. hard and soft states, in which the physical properties of the accretion flow and of the jet are known to change. Recently, the JED-SAD paradigm has been proposed for black hole X-ray binaries, aimed to address the accretion-ejection interplay in these systems. According to this model, the accretion flow is composed by an outer standard Shakura-Sunyaev disk (SAD) and an inner hot Jet Emitting Disk (JED). The JED produces both the hard X-ray emission, effectively playing the role of the hot corona, and the radio jets. Thanks to the good spectral resolution and large effective area of the EPIC/PN instrument on board of XMM-Newton, we have at hand a large number of observations of accreting low-mass X-ray binaries, that allow for the fist time a comprehensive view on the characteristics of the reflection component at different accretion regimes and to probe the effects of a magnetosphere on its formation. Abstract Studies on the optical absorbance spectra of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters were performed, in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 800 nm, in order to highlight some particular characteristics that can affect the achievable precision. The spectra are different mainly due to the different types of xylenol orange that was used and to a lower extent due to the different gelling agents (agarose or gelatine). The characteristic of variation of absorbance spectra versus dose, however, are similar in the various cases and can explain some peculiarities, as apparent effects of dose threshold. In this work we present measurement and results of the deconvolution of the Hg 253.7 nm spectral line shapes, emitted from the mercury isotope high-frequency electrodeless discharge lamps, made at the Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy for the use in Zeeman Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The emission line profiles of 254 nm Hg resonance line have been measured by means of a Zeeman scanning spectrometer at the mercury cold spot temperature value at 20 C. Bathymetric estimation can be obtained from multispectral satellite images for shallow waters. The method is based on the rotation of a pair of spectral bands. One of the resulting images is depth-dependent. Therefore several pixels corresponding to different depths are required to numerically evaluate the linear relation between the pixel values and the real depth for a training area. Discrimination of coral reflectance spectra in the Red Sea

Benthic populations can potentially be mapped from remotely acquired spectral imagery, provided that they have distinctive reflectance signatures. We examined the spectral reflectance characteristics of 14 genera of Red Sea coral using a submersible spectroradiometer. Coral spectra varied quantitatively and qualitatively over the depth interval 5–20 m. Tissue pigment content had a larger effect on reflectance than colony morphology. Ten coral genera could be discriminated with a statistical probability of 52% on the basis of their absolute reflectance.
