Electro- and photo-electrooxidation of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxiacetic acid (2,4,5-T) in aqueous media with PbO2, Sb-doped SnO2, BDD and TiO2-NTs anodes…

2020

Abstract In this work, the 2,4,5-T degradation in aqueous media was studied by electro- (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation methods, which are two of the most important advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for wastewater treatment. Both EC and PEC experiments were carried out in a single compartment cell under galvanostatic conditions (30 mA cm−2) at 298 K by using 0.05 M Na2SO4 + 200 ppm 2,4,5-T at pH 3 and pH 9, as model solutions. EC oxidation was performed using Sb-doped SnO2, PbO2 and boron doped diamond (BDD) as anodic materials. Besides these anodes, TiO2 in a nanotubular structure (TiO2 NTs) with or without PbO2 dispersed nanoparticles (TiO2::PbO2) were also used for PEC ox…

Modification of Structural and Luminescence Properties of Graphene Quantum Dots by Gamma Irradiation and Their Application in a Photodynamic Therapy

2015

Herein, the ability of gamma irradiation to enhance the photoluminescence properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was investigated. Different doses of gamma-irradiation were used on GQDs to examine the way in which their structure and optical properties can be affected. The photoluminescence quantum yield was increased six times for the GQDs irradiated with high doses compared to the nonirradiated material. Both photoluminescence lifetime and values of optical band gap were increased with the dose of applied gamma irradiation. In addition, the exploitation of the gamma-irradiated GQDs as photosensitizers was examined by monitoring the production of singlet oxygen under UV illumination. T…

Determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylates by derivatisation with maleic anhydride followed by liquid chromatography with UV-vis detection.

2007

The esterification of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) by melting with maleic anhydride has been studied in the presence of urea. The reaction rate and yield of non-ethoxylated and ethoxylated alcohols increase largely when grinded urea is suspended in the reaction medium, a 100% yield being achieved at 80 degrees C in 15 min. The procedure is tolerant to the presence of large amounts of water. The UV-vis response factors of the derivatives of individual FAE oligomers vary little with the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, n, and the number of ethylene oxide units, m. Derivatised samples of industrial FAE mixtures, cleaning products and river and sea waters were chromatographed on a…

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 4U 1728-34 from a Simultaneous Chandra-RXTE Observation

2004

We report on a simultaneous Chandra and RossiXTE observation of the LMXB atoll bursting source 4U 1728-34 performed on 2002 March 3-5. We fitted the 1.2-35 keV continuum spectrum with a blackbody plus a Comptonized component. An overabundance of Si by a factor of ~2 with respect to Solar abundance is required for a satisfactory fit. Large residuals at 6-10 keV can be fitted by a broad (FWHM ~ 1.6 keV) Gaussian emission line, or, alternatively, by absorption edges associated with Fe I and Fe XXV at ~7.1 keV and ~9 keV, respectively. In this interpretation, we find no evidence of a broad, or narrow Fe Kalpha line, between 6 and 7 keV. We tested our alternative modeling of the iron Kalpha regi…

Red-green flicker resolution as a function of heterochromatic luminous modulation.

1993

Critical fusion frequencies have been evaluated in heterochromatic red-green flicker as a function of red-green luminous modulation defined by mL = (R-G)/(R+G)%, at five different mean luminance levels, two test sizes (2 degrees and 5 degrees) and square wave stimuli. The extreme values mL = +/- 100 correspond to ordinary light-dark flicker (red or green); mL = 0 corresponds to pure chromatic flicker, and any other values correspond to simultaneous luminous and chromatic flicker. To implement the stimuli we have developed a new stimuli generator (AVICO, colour vision analyser) using bicolour LEDs as the light source and electronic control of the luminances and frequencies. The results for a…

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide-Dependent and Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide-Independent Lactate Dehydrogenases in Homofermentative and Heterofe…

1971

Three homofermentative ( Lactobacillus plantarum B38, L. plantarum B33, Pediococcus pentosaceus B30) and three heterofermentative ( Leuconostoc mesenteroides 39, L. oenos B70, Lactobacillus brevis ) lactic acid bacteria were examined for the presence or absence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent and NAD-independent d - and l -lactate dehydrogenases. Two of the six strains investigated, P. pentosaceus and L. oenos , did not exhibit an NAD-independent enzyme activity capable of reducing dichlorophenol indophenol. The p H optima of the lactic dehydrogenases were determined. The NAD-dependent enzymes from homofermentative strains exhibited optima at p H 7.8 to 8.8, whereas va…

Odd haemoglobins in odd-toed ungulates: Impact of selected haemoglobin characteristics of the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) on the monitorin…

2019

Background Due to the current poaching crisis in Africa, increasing numbers of white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) require opioid immobilisation for medical interventions or management procedures. Alarmingly, the results of both blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry regularly indicate severe hypoxaemia. Yet, the recovery of the animals is uneventful. Thus, neither of the techniques seems to represent the real oxygenation level. We hypothesized that unusual haemoglobin characteristics of this species interfere with the techniques developed and calibrated for the use in human patients. Methods Haemoglobin was isolated from blood samples of four adult, white rhinoceroses. Oxygen dissociat…

Synthesis and antifungal activity of new N-isoxazolyl-2-iodobenzamides

1999

N-Isoxazolyl-2-iodobenzamides 3 and 9, with a benodanil-like structure, were synthesized by refluxing in acetic acid the corresponding benzotriazinones 2 and 8 with potassium iodide for 1 h with the aim to ascertain if they were active as fungicides against Phytophthora citricola Saw., Botrytis cinerea Pers., Rhizoctonia sp. and Alternaria sp. Among the tested iodo derivatives, compounds 3b and 9a possess interesting activities against the aforesaid fungal strains in several cases similar to that of benodanil I taken as reference drug.

A Unique Collection of Palaeolithic Painted Portable Art: Characterization of Red and Yellow Pigments from the Parpalló Cave (Spain).

2016

In this work we analyze the pigments used in the decoration of red and yellow motifs present in the portable art of the Parpallo Cave (Gandia, Spain), one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in the Spanish Mediterranean region. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) and spectrophotometry in the visible region (CIEL*a*b*color coordinates and spectral reflectance curves) were used to perform in situ fast analyses of the red and yellow motifs with portable equipment and to characterize their elemental composition and their colorimetric perception, respectively. According to the elemental composition, the intensity of the fluorescence iron signals in red and yellow motif…

Cadmium accumulation in the crayfish,Procambarus clarkii, using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy

1986

Lake Albufera and the surrounding rice-field waters are being subject to very heavy loads of sewage and toxic industrial residues (including heavy metals and pesticides) from the many urban and wastewaters in this area. The American red crayfish Procambarus clarkii is native to the Louisiana marshes (USA). In 1978, the crayfish appeared in Lake Albufera near Valencia (Spain), and presently, without adequate sanitary controls, the crayfish is being fished commercially for human consumption. In view of this interest, it is important to have accurate information on concentrations of cadmium in natural waters and cadmium levels of tissues of freshwaters animals used as human food, as well as th…
