Photocatalytic oxidation of phenol on TiO2 powders. A Fourier transform infrared study

Abstract In the present paper a detailed investigation of a well known photoreaction, i.e. phenol photodegradation in the presence of TiO2, has been carried out. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) technique has been used to characterize the catalyst surface and to follow the photoprocess by “in situ” measurements in a gas—solid regime, simulating the aqueous liquid—solid regime in which this photodegradation reaction has been usually carried out. The influence on the photoprocess of the surface hydroxylation of the catalyst has been investigated and the presence of some reaction intermediates has been revealed by FT-IR. Interaction between nitroxyl radicals and CdTe quantum dots: Determination of fluorescence-quenching mechanisms in aqueous solution

Abstract The present work characterizes the optical properties of CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) after interaction with nitroxyl radicals based on steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy studies. QDs of different sizes were exposed to 2 different nitroxyl radicals, i.e., TEMPO and 4-amino-TEMPO radicals. A clear dependence of dynamic and static Stern-Volmer constants values, KD and KS, respectively, was observed as a function of the size of QDs used, with a change from a mostly static mechanism (for smaller QD sizes) to a dynamic mechanism predominating as the nanoparticles increase in size. Conversion electron Mössbauer study of low carbon steel polarized in aqueous sulfate and sulfite containing sulfate solutions

Abstract The passivation of low carbon steel was studied in aqueous solutions of 0.5 M Na 2 SO 4 (pH = 3.5 and 6.5) and of 0.5 M Na 2 SO 4 + 0.001 M NaHSO 3 (pH 3.5 and 6.5). The used conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) with the complementary electrochemical, microscopic and spectrophotometric investigations proved that the presence of sulfite ion induces pitting corrosion. The compositions and thichnesses of the passive films formed during the electrochemical treatments are determined from the conversion electron Mossbauer spectra. γ-FeOOH was found in each case as a major component. Facile synthesis and characterization of functionalized, monocrystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods.

Functionalized, monocrystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods were prepared from TiCl4 in aqueous solution under acidic conditions in the presence of dopamine, followed by aging and hydrothermal treatment at 150 degrees C. The surface-bound organic ligand controls the morphology as well as the crystallinity and the phase selection of TiO2. The presence of monocrystalline rutile TiO2 was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and HRTEM investigations. The as-prepared nanorods are soluble in water at pH3. The surface functionalization was analyzed by IR and 1H NMR, confirming the presence of dopamine on the surface. Following a previous investigation on partitioning of some macrocycle compounds in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) aqueous solutions and their effect on the micellar structure, a small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study has been performed at fixed surfactant content (0.20 mol/L) and varying macrocycle concentrations from 0.20 up to 1.0 mol/L. Conductivity measurements have been also performed in order to evaluate the effect of the presence of macrocycles on the critical micellar concentration (cmc) of the two surfactants. Abstract Several chemosensors bearing a fluorescent unit at both ends of a linear polyamine chain were synthesised. The protonation as well as the association constants with Cu2+ and Zn2+ were determined by potentiometry in 0.15 mol dm−3 NaCl at 298.1 K. In the case of 1,16-bis(1-naphthylmethyl)-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazadecane hexahydrochloride (L1), formation of an excimer emission in aqueous acidic solutions was observed. The system was characterized by steady state fluorescence emission and by time resolved fluorescence. Analysis of an impedance function of zinc anodic dissolution

Zinc anodic dissolution has been studied by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The kinetic study of the oxidation mechanism has allowed us to propose a theoretical impedance function for this system in deaerated sulphate medium. Relevant information on the faradaic process is provided by analysis of the theoretical impedance function. Kinetic parameters of this system can be calculated from the fitting of experimental data to the faradaic impedance function deduced theoretically. The physical measurements of this function are analysed by means of the dependence of simulated EIS spectra on kinetic parameters.

Abstract The influence of the dissolution of MnS inclusions at the OCP value and 400 mV versus SCE on the chemical composition of passive films and the electrochemical behaviour of resulfurized austenitic stainless steel was studied in 1 M NaClO 4 , pH 3, solution using SIMS, XPS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the electrochemical microcell technique. The electrochemical dissolution (at 400 mV versus SCE) of inclusions occurred uniformly along the interface and this process was almost complete after 25 min immersion. Reactions of hydrogen peroxide with several lacunary polyoxometalates of the 1:11 series, XW11O39m- (X = Co3+, Ga3+, Fe3+, Si4+, and P5+), are reported. Synthetic pathways to new polyoxotungstates incorporating dioxygen moieties (peroxo and/or superoxo) are developed. The key step involves treating lacunary precursors with H2O2 in strongly buffered aqueous solutions. The in vivo activity of some R2Sn-L-cysteinate complexes (R = Me, Et, n-Bu) against murine P-388 leukaemia has been tested. Only the Et2Sn(IV) complex showed a marginal positive effect. Trigonal bipyramidal tin environments with two carbon (R) atoms and the sulfur atom in the equatorial plane and oxygen (carboxylate) and nitrogen (NH2) in apical positions have been proposed for the solid compexes (R = Me, Et, n-Bu, Ph) on the basis of experimental Mossbauer parameters and infrared (IR) data.
