Sequential injection analysis for benzophenone-4 and phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid in sunscreen sprays by solid-phase extraction coupled with ul…
2002
Abstract A sequential injection UV method was developed to determine benzophenone-4 (BZ4) and phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid (PBS) simultaneously, these being the most commonly used UV-filters in aqueous formulations used as sunscreen sprays. The selective elution of both was performed by on-line solid-phase extraction, by retention on a SAX microcolumn and separation by varying the pH of elution. The sensitivity obtained was 0.042±0.001 ml μg −1 for PBS and 0.0159±0.0003 ml μg −1 for BZ4. The limit of detection was 1.6 μg ml −1 for PBS and 0.6 μg ml −1 for BZ4. The R.S.D. of the results was 1–6% for PBS and 1–12% for BZ4. The method was validated using commercial sunscreen formulations…
Determination of 129I/127I isotope ratios in liquid solutions and environmental soil samples by ICP-MS with hexapole collision cell
2003
The determination of I-129 in environmental samples at ultratrace levels is very difficult by ICP-MS due to a high noise caused by Xe impurities in argon plasma gas (interference of Xe-129(+)), possible (IH2+)-I-127 interference and an insufficient abundance ratio sensitivity of the ICP mass spectrometer for I-129/I-127 isotope ratio measurement. A sensitive, powerful and fast analytical technique for iodine isotope ratio measurements in aqueous solutions and contaminated soil samples directly without sample preparation using ICP-MS with a hexapole collision cell (ICP-CC-QMS) was developed. Oxygen is used as reaction and carrier gas for iodine thermal desorption via the gas phase from solid…
Improvement of the atomic fluorescence determination of mercury by using multicommutation
2002
Atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) determination of Hg has been improved by exploiting the possibilities of the multicommutation approach in order to outline a fully mechanised system which supplies the same sensitivity as the use of continuous measurements, reducing drastically the reagents consumed and waste generation. The use of multicommutation with a simultaneous reduction of the liquid–gas separator volume and the insertion point modification of argon transport gas provides a sensitivity of the AFS measurements of 300 mV ng−1 ml (using a full scale of 1000 mV), a limit of detection (3 s) of 1.3 ng l−1 and relative standard deviation values below 0.1% for 10 independent measuremen…
The volatile inventory (F, Cl, Br, S, C) of magmatic apatite: An integrated analytical approach
2012
Abstract Apatite is ubiquitous in a wide range of magmatic rocks and its F–Cl–Br–S systematics can be used to decipher e.g., mixing processes within a magmatic complex and may give insights into fluid un-mixing and degassing processes during the emplacement and cooling of plutonic rocks. In this study, we analyzed a F-apatite (Durango, Mexico), a Cl-apatite (Odegarden, Norway) and apatites from five plutonic samples from the alkaline Mt. Saint Hilaire Complex (Canada) by means of Electron Microprobe Analysis (EPMA), Laser Ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), pyrohydrolysis combined with ion chromatography, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ins…
Flow spectrophotometric determination of ammonium ion
1999
Abstract A flow procedure is proposed for the determination of ammonium ion. The sample in basic medium is forced through a solid-phase reactor containing immobilized AgCl on polymeric pearl beads. The released Ag + , complexed with the ammonia, gives a blue ternary complex with the aid of bromopyrogallol red and 1,10-phenanthroline which is spectrophotometrically monitored at 636 nm. The calibration graph is linear over the range 1–20 μg ml −1 ammonium ion, detection limit ( s / n = 3) 0.35 μg ml −1 and relative standard deviation (slope) 1.9 % ( n = 7). The sample throughput is 48 h −1 . The influence of foreign compounds is studied and the procedure is applied to ammonium ion determi…
Urine polyamines determination using dansyl chloride derivatization in solid-phase extraction cartridges and HPLC
1999
The derivatization of biogenic amines such as putrescine, cadaverine, spermidine and spermine with dansyl chloride in solid phase extraction cartridges is described. Different types of filling materials were tested in order to have the highest retention of the different analytes. The best results were obtained by using C18 cartridges. The optimal conditions were: amine solution buffered at pH 12, 2 mM dansyl chloride (acetone-bicarbonate solution 20 mM (pH 9-9.5), 2 + 3 v/v) as reagent concentration, room temperature and 30 min reaction time. The developed procedure was applied to the determination of these polyamines in urine samples from healthy controls and cancer patients using HPLC wit…
Determination of aluminum at the parts per billion level by solvent extraction and flame atomic emission spectrometry
1991
A new method for the determination of aluminum at the parts per billion level, by N 2 O/ C 2 H 2 flame emission spectrometry with prior solvent extraction with acetylacetone or 8-hydroxyquinoline in 4-methylpentan-2-one, has been performed. The influence of extraction conditions and instrumental parameters on the sensitivity, precision, and dynamic range of the emission calibration curves have been studied. The limit of detection is between 5 and 10 ppb for both ligands, the variation coefficient being 0.2 and 3% at levels of 75 and 25 ppb, respectively. The method has been applied to the determination of Al in water and the results obtained are compared with those found by the standard add…
Capillary electrophoresis for the determination of pesticide residues
2003
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is becoming an advantageous tool for determining pesticide residues in environmental matrices because of its simplicity and high separation efficiency. However, inadequate limits of detection (LODs) and a lack of selective detectors limit the technique. The present review gives an overview of current developments in off-column and on-column approaches to trace enrichment in analysing real samples, and summarises the determination of pesticides residues by conventional CE as well as by the emerging techniques, such as CE-mass spectrometry (MS). The usefulness of these approaches in environmental applications is documented.
Development and characterization of a thermal inkjet-based aerosol generator for micro-volume sample introduction in analytical atomic spectrometry
2011
A novel system for the introduction of liquid samples into analytical plasmas for atomic spectrometric analysis is presented in this manuscript for the first time. The proposed “drop-on-demand” (DOD) aerosol generator is based on the use of a modified thermal inkjet cartridge. This system employs a lab-built microcontroller, which allows accessing all parameters important for driving the dosing cartridge for the generation of pL-droplets from sample volumes in the μL range. The droplet generation frequency, thus the resulting liquid flow rate, is variable over a wide range from the generation of isolated droplets up to a theoretical flow rate of approximately 2 mL min−1, with parallel opera…
Study of passive sampling of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in gas phase using Amberlite XAD resins as filling materials of semipermeable membranes
2013
Abstract In this work, a study was performed to evaluate the use of Amberlite XAD resins (XAD-2, XAD-4 and XAD-16), for the first time, as filling materials for low-density polyethylene membranes, which will be inserted as passive samplers for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gas phase. The use of samplers deployed for 48 h evidenced a relative capability to retain the compounds under study. A detailed study was performed to evaluate the recovery of analytes from the sampler through microwave-assisted extraction by using acetonitrile. A clean-up step using alumina-C18 cartridges was necessary before determination of the PAHs by high performance liquid chromatography with fluoresce…
