Rapid analysis of effluents generated by the dairy industry for fat determination by preconcentration in nylon membranes and attenuated total reflect…

2014

Abstract This paper describes a new approach for the determination of fat in the effluents generated by the dairy industry which is based on the retention of fat in nylon membranes and measurement of the absorbances on the membrane surface by ATR-IR spectroscopy. Different options have been evaluated for retaining fat in the membranes using milk samples of different origin and fat content. Based on the results obtained, a method is proposed for the determination of fat in effluents which involves the filtration of 1 mL of the samples through 0.45 µm nylon membranes of 13 mm diameter. The fat content is then determined by measuring the absorbance of band at 1745 cm −1 . The proposed method c…

NMR relaxation times of trabecular bone—reproducibility, relationships to tissue structure and effects of sample freezing

2010

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provides a potential tool for non-invasive evaluation of the trabecular bone structure. The objective of this study was to determine the reproducibility of the NMR relaxation parameters (T(2), Carr-Purcel-T(2), T(1ρ)) for fat and water and relate those to the structural parameters obtained by micro-computed tomography (μCT). Especially, we aimed to evaluate the effect of freezing on the relaxation parameters. For storing bone samples, freezing is the standard procedure during which the biochemical and cellular organization of the bone marrow may be affected. Bovine trabecular bone samples were stored at -20 °C for 7 days and measured by NMR spec…

Determination of the energetic value of fruit and milk-based beverages through partial-least-squares attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform i…

2005

Abstract The estimation of important nutritional parameters, such as carbohydrates content and energetic value (calories) in commercially available fruit juice and flavour milk shakes has been made by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) using a partial-least-square (PLS) calibration approach. A highly heterogeneous population of 65 samples obtained from the Spanish market, covering fruit juices, flavour milk shakes and milk-added fruit juices was used. The spectral range and the size of the calibration set for building the PLS model have been evaluated. Considering a calibration set comprised of 27 samples, selected via hierarchical cluster analys…

3He-MRI-based measurements of intrapulmonarypO2 and its time course during apnea in healthy volunteers: first results, reproducibility, and technical…

2000

We applied a recently developed method of following the time course of the intrapulmonary oxygen partial pressure p(O2)(t) during apnea by (3)He MRI to healthy volunteers. Using two imaging series with different interscan times during two breathholds (double acquisition technique), relaxation of (3)He due to paramagnetic oxygen and depolarization by RF pulses were discriminated. In all four subjects, the temporal evolution of p(O2) was found to be linear, and was described by an initial partial pressure p(0) and a decrease rate R. Also, regional differences of both p(0) and R were observed. A correlation between p(0) and R was apparent. Finally, we discuss limitations of the double acquisit…

Research on Spectroscopy in Morocco from 1984 to 2006

2007

Abstract The evolution of spectroscopy‐based research activity in Morocco was evaluated on the basis of publications that have appeared in the Science Citation Index, Expanded (SCI), during the cumulative period 1984–2006 (September). The most active research groups, and their universities or centers, were identified in this subject from their scientific production in the first years of this century. The preference to publish in specific journals, the main areas of interest to Moroccan authors, and the spectroscopy techniques most commonly employed for their studies were also appraised. This scientometric study was undertaken to introduce a group of papers in a special issue of Spectroscopy…

Efficacy of preheated chelating agents on calcium ion removal from instrumented root canals

2021

Background The heating of chelating agents such as EDTA increases dentin wettability by decreasing surface tension. However, the calcium ion release effect of preheated chelating agents in instrumented root canals has not yet been mentioned. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the number of calcium ions removed by the pre-heated chelating agents from the root canals. Material and Methods After 51 bovine teeth were instrumented, three of them were separated as negative controls and the remaining teeth were divided into six groups according to the temperature of the solution (at 22 or 37ºC): EDTA-22, CITRIC-22, QMix-22, EDTA-37, CITRIC-37 and QMix-37. Following irrigation, calcium ion lev…

Lineshapes and optical selectivity in high-resolution double-resonance ionization mass spectrometry

1999

Abstract Lineshapes expected in high-resolution double-resonance ionization spectroscopy are calculated using the density matrix formalism, integrated over experimentally realistic conditions including atomic velocity and angular distributions as well as laser intensity profiles. The results of these calculations are compared with experimental measurements on the system 4s2 1S0 → 4s4p 1P1 → 4s4d 1D1 → ion for calcium. The measurements of lineshape, with a dynamic range of >106, reveal and confirm subtle effects predicted by theory. These include the shape, position and intensity of the laser-induced structure in the spectra and the simultaneous presence of coherent and incoherent excitation…

Optimization of a LC method for the enantioseparation of a non-competitive glutamate receptor antagonist, by experimental design methodology

2006

Abstract The aim of this work was to obtain the direct optical resolution of a new glutamate receptor antagonist (( p -chloro)1-aryl-6,7,-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, PS3), by liquid chromatography on Chiralcel ® OD column. A response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the enantiomeric separation of the racemate with the lowest number of experiments; in particular, a face-centred design (FCD) was applied to evaluate the influence of critical parameters on the experimental response. Furthermore, in order to find the best compromise between several responses, a multicriteria decision-making approach, the Derringer's desirability function, was successful to simulta…

Estuarine sediment quality assessment by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy

2010

Partial least squares Fourier-transform infrared (PLS-FTIR) models were developed for the quality assessment of estuarine sediments through the evaluation of several physico-chemical parameters. Models were based on the chemometric treatment of attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectra directly obtained from samples previously lyophilized and sieved through a lower than 63 μm grid. Spectra were scanned from 3997 to 523 cm-1, averaging 36 scans per spectrum with a nominal resolution of 8 cm-1. Models were built using reference data obtained for sediment samples collected from Ria de Arousa estuary. Hierarchical cluster classification of sediment ATR spectra was employed for the establishment…

Trace analysis by ion mobility spectrometry: From conventional to smart sample preconcentration methods. A review.

2018

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a rapid and high sensitive technique widely used in security and forensic areas. However, a lack of selectivity is usually observed in the analysis of complex samples due to the scarce resolution of the technique. The literature concerning the use of conventional and novel smart materials in the pretreatment and preconcentration of samples previous to IMS determinations has been critically reviewed. The most relevant strategies to enhance selectivity and sensitivity of IMS determinations have been widely discussed, based in the use of smart materials, as immunosorbents, aptamers, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), ionic liquids (ILs) and nanomaterial. …
