Chemical characterization of ancient liturgical vestment (chasuble) by Inductively Coupled Plasma–Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP–OES)
2016
Abstract This paper presents the chemical characterization of the yarns of an ancient liturgical vestment (chasuble). The samples have been analyzed for Al, Ag, Au, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn using amounts always less than 1 mg by Inductively Coupled Plasma–Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Except a sample, silver is the most abundant element in all the yarns. In the samples containing silver, it ranged from 68 to 97%. Only two samples contain aluminum. Although the investigated chasuble is recorded in the inventory as an artifact of the XV century, a part of the yarns is composed of materials attributed to later period. In fact, the voluntary use of aluminum in metal alloys is du…
Single-Hemisphere Photoelectron Momentum Microscope With Time-of-Flight Recording
2020
Photoelectron momentum microscopy is an emerging powerful method for angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), especially in combination with imaging spin filters. These instruments record kx-ky images, typically exceeding a full Brillouin zone. As energy filters double-hemispherical or time-of-flight (ToF) devices are in use. Here we present a new approach for momentum mapping of the full half-space, based on a single hemispherical analyzer (path radius 225 mm). Excitation by an unfocused He lamp yielded an energy resolution of 7.7 meV. The performance is demonstrated by k-imaging of quantum-well states in Au and Xe multilayers. The alpha-square-aberration term (alpha: entrance an…
Deconvolution of XPS spectra
1991
The resolution of XPS spectra is limited mainly by instrumental parameters like the spectral line width of the exciting X-ray source and the finite energy resolution of the electron analyzer. If the line broadening functions resulting from the instrumental setup can be estimated and expressed by a spectrometer function, a mathematical recalculation of the intrinsic signal is possible by deconvolution. With the method presented in this paper, a resolution enhancement by a factor of 3 can be obtained. Measured spectra of physically correlated spin orbit doublets have been deconvoluted, and it is shown, that the intensity ratios and the positions are comparable with results obtained by highly …
<title>High-frequency electrodeless light sources for application</title>
2001
The high-frequency electrodes light sources (HFELS) are widely used as bright radiators of narrow and intensive spectral lines covering spectral region from VUV to IR. In this work we shall give a short overview of our experience in preparation of HFELS, containing He, H, Rb, Hg, Zn, Pb, As, Sb, Bi, Tl, Hg-Cd, Hg-Zn, Hg-Cd-Zn, Se-Te for different applications. Special attention would be paid for HFELS use in Zeeman mercury analyzer, in Atomic absorption analyzer and Angle and glass refractive index measurement system.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. The performance of the cryogenic buffer-gas stopping cell of SHIPTRAP
2018
Direct high-precision mass spectrometry of the heaviest elements with SHIPTRAP, at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, requires high efficiency to deal with the low production rates of such exotic nuclides. A second-generation gas stopping cell, operating at cryogenic temperatures, was developed and recently integrated into the relocated system to boost the overall efficiency. Offline measurements using 223Ra and 225Ac recoil-ion sources placed inside the gas volume were performed to characterize the gas stopping cell with respect to purity and extraction efficiency. In addition, a first online test using the fusion-evaporation residue 254No was performed, resulting in a combined stopping and extrac…
A reservoir trap for antiprotons
2015
We have developed techniques to extract arbitrary fractions of antiprotons from an accumulated reservoir, and to inject them into a Penning-trap system for high-precision measurements. In our trap-system antiproton storage times > 1.08 years are estimated. The device is fail-safe against power-cuts of up to 10 hours. This makes our planned comparisons of the fundamental properties of protons and antiprotons independent from accelerator cycles, and will enable us to perform experiments during long accelerator shutdown periods when background magnetic noise is low. The demonstrated scheme has the potential to be applied in many other precision Penning trap experiments dealing with exotic p…
La utilización de marfil de cachalote en el Calcolítico de Portugal
2013
Scientific analysis were undertaken within a research project concerning ivory objects from the Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. In several of the analyses of objects from Portuguese Estremadura, especially V-perforated buttons, we could detect for the first time the presence of sperm whale ivory. This highlights the advantage and necessity of scientific analysis of ivory. It also clearly demonstrates that not all ivory used was ivory from African or Asian elephants, but we also did find ivory from the extinct Elephas antiquus, the hippopotamus and in this case sperm-whale. Thus, already in the Chalcolithic the raw material provenience was highly diverse, which in …
INDAGINI DIAGNOSTICHE PROPEDEUTICHE AL RESTAURO DELLA SALA DEI VENTI DI PALAZZO DEI NORMANNI A PALERMO
2019
Sponge biosilica formation involves syneresis following polycondensation in vivo.
2011
Syneresis is a process observed during the maturation/aging of silica gels obtained by sol-gel synthesis that results in shrinkage and expulsion of water due to a rearrangement and increase in the number of bridging siloxane bonds. Here we describe how the process of biosilica deposition during spicule ("biosilica" skeleton of the siliceous sponges) formation involves a phase of syneresis that occurs after the enzyme-mediated polycondensation reaction. Primmorphs from the demosponge Suberites domuncula were used to study syneresis and the inhibition of this mechanism. We showed by scanning electron microscopy that spicules added to primmorphs that have been incubated with manganese sulfate …
Magnetic Ordering and Spin Dynamics of Ba1-xEuxSi Phases
2011
We have investigated the magnetic ordering and spin dynamics of the solid solution series Ba1–xEuxSi with 0 < x ≤ 1 applying X-ray diffraction, electric conductivity measurements, Mossbauer spectroscopy, muon spin depolarization, and neutron diffraction. Our results suggest a spin glass-like behavior of Ba1–xEuxSi for concentrations close to x = 0.3 exist. Different spin ordering phenomena are found, which are dependent on the relative europium concentrations.
