Study on the initial stages of water corrosion of fluorozirconate glasses

Abstract The surface corrosion process associated with the hydrolysis of fluorozirconate glass, ZBLAN (53ZrF 4 , 20BaF 2 , 20NaF, 4LaF 2 , 3AlF 3 ) was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After a short exposure period (25 min) of the glass surface to deionized water the XPS data indicate an increase of the oxygen content accompanied by a decrease of fluorine concentration. Determination of hydrogen peroxide using glassy carbon and graphite/polyester composite electrodes modified by vanadium-doped zirconias

Abstract Synthetic monoclinic and tetragonal vanadium-doped zirconias (VZrO2) with vanadium loading ranging from 0.5 to 15 mol% are used to modify glassy carbon and graphite/polyester composite electrodes able to detect oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in neutral aqueous media. Electrodes modified by monoclinic VZrO2 decrease the overpotential for the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in neutral and alkaline media and enhance their reduction currents with respect to unmodified carbon electrodes. Thio(bisphenolato) complexes of the type [M2(mu-tbop-kappa3O,S,O)2Cl4] [M = Zr 1, Hf 2 and tbop = 2,2-thiobis{4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-butyl)phenolate}] were prepared by HCl elimination from tbopH2 and MCl4. Substitution of the chlorides in 1 and 2 by 2,6-diisopropylphenolato groups (dipp) generates new compounds [M2(mu-tbop-kappa3O,S,O)2(dipp)4] (M = Zr 3, Hf 4). The structures of 1-4 were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy; complexes 3 and 4 were further investigated by X-ray crystallography. These studies showed 1-4 to be dimers either in the solid state or in solution and to have metal centers adopting distorted octahedral geometry. Lattice dynamics of superconducting zirconium and hafnium nitride halides

We have performed a study of the Raman active modes of β-HfNCl, β-ZrNCl, and β-ZrNBr and Na-doped β-HfNCl in various scattering configurations. The experimental values are compared with a lattice dynamical calculation andassigned to definite atomic motions. The variation of the atomic force constants are analyzed as a function of the bond length, relating their relative strength with the atomic characteristics of the compound.

Microstructural Evolution from Praseodymium-Containing Zircon Gels to Prx-ZrSiO4 Solid Solutions

Structural evolution and coupled microstructural transformations occurred on annealing mineralizer-free Pr-containing ZrSiO4 gels up to final praseodymium-doped zircon yellow pigments are reported. Gels with nominal compositions Prx-ZrSiO4, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.125, were prepared from mixtures of zirconium and silicon alkoxides and praseodymium acetylacetonate. Crystallization pathway and microstructural changes of thermally treated dried gels were followed by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopies, respectively. Synthesis and characterization of praseodymium-containing ZrSiO4 solid solutions from gels

Abstract The preparation and characterization of a series of praseodymium–zircon solid solution (Prx–ZrSiO4) materials with increasing nominal amounts of Pr is reported. Pr-doped zircon gels were prepared by gelling mixtures of zirconium n-propoxide, praseodymium acetylacetonate and tetraethylorthosilicate, and annealed over the range of temperature up to the formation of Pr–zircon solid solutions. Structural Infrared Analysis of Ultra Nanosized Crystals of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia

This paper describes the characterization of ultra nanosized crystals as monoclinic, tetragonal, cubic or mixed phases of ZrO2. Nanopowders are produced using the microwave method, which allows control of the ratio of zirconium to yttrium to yield various crystallographic structures. The synthesized ultra nanosized particles have very broad XRD peaks. In particular, the similarity of the XRD peaks of tetragonal and cubic nanocrystals makes it difficult to distinguish between these two crystals. Abstract Crystalline ZrO2 nanoparticles were prepared from zirconium isopropoxide by slow hydrolysis and subsequent hydrothermal treatment of solutions containing various amounts of sodium hydroxide at 180 °C.
