Spatially ordered surfactant assemblies in the gas phase: negatively charged bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate-alkaline metal ion aggregates

2009

The formation and structural features of negatively charged aggregates of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) surfactant molecules in the gas phase have been investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and density functional theory calculations. Mainly driven by the interactions of alkali metal ions both with the oxygen atoms of the sulfonate group and with the succinate moiety of the AOT− anion, spatially ordered supramolecular assemblies, characterized by an internal core composed of surfactant counterions and hydrophilic head groups surrounded by the surfactant alkyl chains pointing outwards, are formed. Calculations have shown that surfactant self-organ…

Micellar liquid chromatographic separation of amino acids using pre- and post-column o -phthalaldehyde/ N -acetylcysteine derivatization

2000

Abstract The isocratic analysis of primary proteic amino acids using a C18 column, micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and 1-propanol at varying pH, and pre- and post-column formation of the o-phthalaldehyde (OPA)/N-acetyl- l -cysteine (NAC) isoindoles, is examined. An interpretive optimization strategy was applied to find the best separation conditions. For this purpose, empirical polynomial models were used to describe the elution behavior of the isoindoles and free amino acids, using as separation factors the concentrations of surfactant and modifier (two-factor problem), or these two factors and the pH of the mobile phase (three-factor problem). The separation of the…

Pseudopeptidic ligands: exploring the self-assembly of isophthaloylbisglycine (H2IBG) and divalent metal ions.

2012

We present a systematic study of the complexation of the new pseudopeptidic ligand isophthaloylbisglycine (H(2)IBG) with divalent metal ions of varying ionic radius. This work represents the initial employment of H(2)IBG in the coordination chemistry of alkaline earth, 3d transition, Zn(II) and Cd(II) metal elements. Infrared, NMR, thermal, magnetic, adsorption and theoretical studies of these compounds are also discussed.

Phase transitions in some n-alkanes and petroleum waxes — investigation by photoacoustic and exoelectron emission techniques

2000

Abstract The use of the photoacoustic (PA) effect and photostimulated exoelectron emission (EEE) technique in the investigation of first- and second-order phase transitions in pure n -alkanes such as n -C 22 , n -C 28 and n -C 32 and in three petroleum waxes having different carbon number distributions, have been examined. Changes in the amplitude and phase of the PA signal with temperature and the temperature dependence of the intensity of photostimulated EEE across the phase transitions have been measured. These measurements have shown that both the polymorphic phase transitions and melting of these hydrocarbons are accompanied by jumps or peaks of the PA amplitude and phase and EEE inten…

Insights into catanionic vesicles thermal transition by NMR spectroscopy

2012

Oppositely charged ionic surfactants can self-assemble into hollow structures, called catanionic vesicles, where the anionic-cationic surfactant pair assumes a double-tailed zwitterionic attitude. In the present work, multilamellar- to-unilamellar thermal transition of a mixed aqueous system of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), with a slight excess of the anionic one, has been investigated by 1H, 2H, 14N NMR spectra and 23Na transverse relaxation measurements. It has been inferred that an increase of the temperature enhances the SDS counterion dissociation, which can be considered as one of the driving forces of the mentioned transition. Moreover, in…

A dammarane-type saponin from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus.

1993

A new C31 dammarane-type triterpenoid saponin has been isolated from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus. Its structure was elucidated to be ampelozigenin-15 alpha-O-acetyl- 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods, and by chemical transformations. Ampelozigenin is a novel triterpene, (20R,22R)-16 beta,22:16 alpha, 30-diepoxydammar-24(24')- methylene-3 beta, 15 alpha, 20-triol.

Glass-forming non-symmetric bis-styryl-DWK-type dyes for infra-red radiation amplification systems

2019

Abstract A series of D-π-A type organic dyes with bulky triphenylmethyl moiety containing 2,6-bis-(4-substituted)styryl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene donor (D) fragments and different electron acceptors (A) were synthesized and investigated, mostly for potential applications in organic solid-state lasers as infra-red (IR) radiation amplification medium. Dye glass transition temperature is above 99 °C with thermal stability in the region from 173 °C to 326 °C which was slightly influenced by the electron acceptor fragment attached to the 4H-pyrane ring in 4-position. Introducing substituents in 4-position within one of the styryl-fragments with stronger electron withdrawing properties decreased ASE exc…

Use of pH gradients in continuous-flow systems and multivariate regression techniques applied to the determination of methionine and cysteine in phar…

1997

Abstract The simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of methionine and cysteine in presence of cystine and other compounds in pharmaceuticals, using a multivariate calibration method, was studied. The method is based on the reaction between the analytes and the o- phthalaldehyde -N- acetyl - l - cysteine (OPA-NAC) reagent performed in a continuous-flow system (FI). The FI system allows the generation of a local pH gradient in order to produce spectral and/or kinetic changes in the UV-Vis spectra of the amino acid-OPA-NAC derivatives. This information is used to improve the prediction ability of the Partial Least-Squares (PLS) models. The performance of two FI assemblies, the selection…

Extraction of dansylated amino acids using the supported liquid membrane technique

1997

Extraction using the supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique demands conditions where the extracted compounds can be made uncharged allowing them to pass through the membrane. For amino acids, being bifunctional, such conditions can not be obtained directly. One way to overcome this problem is to block one of the functionalities by derivatization, utilising the other group for the transport. The SLM extraction of dansylated amino acids was investigated and optimized. It was possible to obtain high extraction efficiencies (>90%) for most amino acids. For amino acids with polar side chains, such high extraction efficiencies were only obtained at low analyte concentrations ( 10 nmol 1-l). Fo…
