Electron paramagnetic resonance investigation on the hyperfine structure of the center in amorphous silicon dioxide

2007

Abstract We report an experimental investigation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy on the hyperfine structure of the E δ ′ center in γ-ray irradiated amorphous silicon dioxide materials. This study has driven us to the determination of the intensity ratio between the hyperfine doublet and the main resonance line of this point defect. This ratio was obtained for a variety of silica samples and compared with the analogous ratio obtained for the E γ ′ defect. The comparison definitively confirms that the electronic wave function involved in the E δ ′ center is actually delocalized over four nearly equivalent Si atoms.

Electron transfer between carbon dots and tetranuclear Dawson-derived sandwich polyanions

2022

Among the photocatalysts which could be used for converting solar energy, polyoxometalates are often regarded as ideal candidates because of their remarkable performances in photocatalytic water splitting and photodegradation of pollutants. Nonetheless, these polyanions are only capable of absorbing UV light, unless coupled to a visible-light photosensitizer. Carbon nanodots are especially promising for this purpose because of their strong visible-light absorption, photostability, non-toxicity, and very low production costs. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of coupling carbon dots to polyoxometalates with different structures, by a simple self-assembly approach based on electrost…

Limbal stem cells as a potential source of pancreatic beta cells

2009

BACKGROUND/RATIONAL Beta cell replacement therapy represents an alternative approach to conventional insulin regimen for the management of type 1 diabetes. Stem cells theoretically represent a suitable and renewable source of surrogate beta cells. Recently, it has been demonstrated that corneal epithelium contains stem cells in the basal layer of the limbus. Our aim was to isolate and characterize limbal stem cells (LSCs) from adult corneal-limbal biopsies, and to assess their capability to differentiate into insulin-producing cells. METHODS 2-3 mm2 biopsies were obtained from limbus and central cornea of four patients undergoing surgery for ocular diseases not involving conjuctive or corne…

Enhancing carbon dots fluorescence via plasmonic resonance energy transfer

2022

Using plasmonic interactions to engineer optical properties at the nanoscale is an important challenge of current photonics. Here we establish a general strategy to enhance the orange emission of carbon dots by coupling them to gold nanoparticles through a polymeric spacer in solution. We exploit the overlap between the surface plasmon resonance of gold and the electronic transitions of carbon dots to achieve a fivefold increase of their fluorescence in the orange region, which is usually very weak. We demonstrate that this enhancement stems from an ultrafast resonance energy transfer from the coherent plasmonic state of the gold nanoantenna to the coupled carbon dot. Our study advances the…

The "Livio Scarsi" X-Ray Facility at University of Palermo for Device Testing

2015

In this work, we report on the characteristics of the Livio Scarsi X-ray facility at University of Palermo. The facility is able to produce low energy X rays, within the energy range of 0.1-60 keV, with fluence rates ranging from 105-108 photons/mm2 s. The laboratory is equipped with an innovative digital detection system, based on semiconductor detectors (Si and CdTe detectors), able to provide accurate and precise estimation of the fluence rate, the energy and the exposure of X rays, even at high counting rate conditions. Instrumentation for electrical characterization (DC-AC) of semiconductor devices, for both off-line and on-line (i.e. during the irradiation) measurements, is also avail…

Digital techniques for high-rate high-resolution radiation measurements

2014

Digital pulse processing (DPP) techniques are increasingly used in the development of modern spectroscopic systems. DPP systems, based on direct digitizing and processing of detector signals (preamplifier output signals), ensure higher flexibility, stability, lower dead time, higher throughput and better energy resolution than traditional pulse processing systems. In this work, we present our progress in the development of DPP systems for high-rate high-resolution radiation measurements. An innovative digital system, able to perform multi-parameter analysis (input counting rate, pulse height, pulse shape, event arrival time, etc.) even at high photon counting rates is presented. Experimenta…

A robust calibration methodology for an On-Board Diagnostic car system

2006

New car models are now by law equipped with on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems aimed at monitoring the state of health of strategic components that ensure low levels of polluting exhaust emissions. During development phases, for each new car model, the OBD system must be finely calibrated. This article presents a robust calibration methodology taking into account sources of variability mainly due to production process, operating, and environmental conditions. The methodology enables us to evaluate the false alarm and failure to detect risks intrinsically related to the adopted calibration. An application concerning an upstream oxygen sensor monitored by the OBD is presented.
