This study investigated the influence of the torque produced by plantar flexor muscles on cortical and spinal excitability during lengthening and shortening voluntary contractions. To that purpose, modulations of motor-evoked potential (MEP) and Hoffmann (H) reflex were compared in the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) during anisometric submaximal and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the plantar flexor muscles. The size of the response to a startling auditory stimulus (SAS) may reflect the excitability of the reticulospinal tract. In this study, we examined whether there was any excitability change in the reticulospinal tract during preparation for execution of two types of choice reaction time task: a forced choice reaction time task (fCRT) and a Go/no-Go task (GnG). Abnormal Somatosensory Evoked Potentials Indicate Compressive Cervical Myelopathy in Mucopolysaccharidoses

Compressive myelopathy at the cranio-cervical junction is a complication of mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). To detect cervical myelopathy we recorded median and posterior tibial nerve SEPs in 15 patients aged 2.4 - 33.4 years (median 8.8 years) with MPS I-S (n = 3), MPS IVA (n = 8) and MPS VI (n = 4). In addition to the cortical waveforms we recorded the subcortical median nerve SEPs N13b and P13 generated near the cranio-cervical junction and the lemniscal P30 after posterior tibial nerve stimulation. Functional properties of motor units in motor neuron diseases and neuropathies.

The relationship between the size of single motor unit (MU) action potentials and their twitch properties was estimated in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA, n = 5) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, n = 10), as well as in patients with peripheral nerve lesions (PNL, n = 9). The data obtained from these groups were compared to normal controls (n = 8). In controls, the single MU twitch force was highly correlated to the corresponding EMG potential size in terms of macro EMG area. Objective: The objective of this study was to adapt and validate a self-report version of the Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM III) for the Spanish population. Prevalence of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy: A door-to-door survey in a Sicilian municipality

Introduction - Because of the limited information on cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, we conducted a door-to-door two-phase survey in a Sicilian municipality. Material and methods - We first screened for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy among the inhabitants of the municipality : (N= 7653, as of the prevalence day, November 1, 1987).
