A 3D imaging technique using a high speed binocular stereovision system was developed in combination with corresponding image processing algorithms for accurate determination of the parameters of particles leaving the spinning disks of centrifugal fertilizer spreaders. Validation of the stereo-matching algorithm using a virtual 3D stereovision simulator indicated an error of less than 2 pixels for 90% of the particles. The setup was validated using the cylindrical spread pattern of an experimental spreader. A 2D correlation coefficient of 90% and a Relative Error of 27% was found between the experimental results and the (simulated) spread pattern obtained with the developed setup. In combin…

The analysis and selection of the spinning disk system parameters for the measurement of static electrification of insulation oils

2007

The paper presents results the aim of which was determining the most favorable conditions of ECT (electrostatic charge tendency) measurement taking of insulation oils in the spinning disk system. The work proved that a proper selection of the size and roughness of the disk surface makes the measured volume density of charge qw independent of the hydrodynamic conditions in the measuring system on the solid and liquid phase border. Charge qw density meets then the criterion of a material coefficient and can be used for comparing the results obtained from the systems varying in dimensions and hydrodynamic conditions. The changes suggested also ensure a high repeatability and reproducibility of…

Electrospun nanofibers: role of nanofibers in water remediation and effect of experimental variables on their nano topography and application process…

2021

Water is the elixir of life and the most elementary need for the survival of human beings on planet Earth. With rapid industrialization, globalization and human exploitation, natural water resources are diminishing at a startling rate wherein availability of potable water has drastically decreased in recent times and hence membrane technology is a highly pursued area for water purification. The simple and cost-effective electrospinning technique has evolved to be a state-of-the-art method for developing nanofibers of tailored thickness and diameters by combining a broad range of starting materials. This comprehensive review emphasizes on the demonstration of electrospun nanofibers based on …

High throughput electro-hydrodynamic processing in food encapsulation and food packaging applications: Viewpoint

2017

Abstract Looking genuinely at nature, nanofibers often serve as a basic platform where either organic or inorganic components are built upon. The fiber structure exhibits, from a structural point of view, the intrinsic ability to mechanically reinforce materials but also the less well-known property of enhancing the barrier performance of polymer matrices when applied smartly. To reproduce and tailor this extraordinary nature's design, a reliable technology that is able to fabricate fiber nanostructures from a variety of materials with size and size distribution control and composition flexibility is highly desirable. In addition, if this technology could allow nanofiber shortening to achie…

Analysis of Some Innovative and Flexible Sheet Forming Processes

2002

In the field of sheet forming, innovative and flexible processes that do not impose the use of expensive conventional equipments and/or do not require time consuming set-up operations have become, nowadays, a rather promising research topic. Two different main lines are currently followed: the former is based on the development of new stamping processes based on the utilization of flexible media, while the latter is aimed to develop so called progressive forming processes (spinning and incremental forming). Both hydro-forming and incremental forming permit a very relevant reduction of the tooling and set-up costs and improve process flexibility. These items are discussed in detail in the pa…

The emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial strains is an urgent problem derived from the widespread and uncontrolled use of antibiotics. Therefore, new arrays of lead compounds exerting antimicrobial activity are necessary to contrast the spreading of MDR pathogens. Between 1980 and 2003, the interest in scientific research programs aimed to the new drug discovery by large pharmaceutical companies progressively decreased due to increasing costs in the respect of i) the low discovery rate of new leads, ii) the small amounts of product recovery needing process optimization and, finally, iii) regulatory obstacles associated with long-lasting pre-clinical and clinical trials for ther…

Palladium Supported on Cross-Linked Imidazolium Network on Silica as Highly Sustainable Catalysts for the Suzuki Reaction under Flow Conditions

2013

Highly cross-linked imidazolium-based materials, obtained by radical oligomerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts in the presence of 3-mercaptopropyl-modified silica gel, were used as supports for palladium catalysts. Thanks to the high imidazolium loading these materials were able to support a high amount of the metal (10 wt%). Such materials were characterized by several techniques (13C magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller technique, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy). The palladium catalysts displayed good activity allowing the synthesis of several biphenyl compounds in high yields working with only 0.1 mol% of …

Fabrication of elastomeric scaffolds with curvilinear fibrous structures for heart valve leaflet engineering

2014

Native semi-lunar heart valves are composed of a dense fibrous network that generally follows a curvilinear path along the width of the leaflet. Recent models of engineered valve leaflets have predicted that such curvilinear fiber orientations would homogenize the strain field and reduce stress concentrations at the commissure. In the present work, a method was developed to reproduce this curvilinear fiber alignment in electrospun scaffolds by varying the geometry of the collecting mandrel. Elastomeric poly(ester urethane)urea was electrospun onto rotating conical mandrels of varying angles to produce fibrous scaffolds where the angle of fiber alignment varied linearly over scaffold length.…

Magnetic Resonance Microscopy Contribution to Interpret High-Resolution Magic Angle Spinning Metabolomic Data of Human Tumor Tissue

2010

[EN] HRMAS NMR is considered a valuable technique to obtain detailed metabolic profile of unprocessed tissues. To properly interpret the HRMAS metabolomic results, detailed information of the actual state of the sample inside the rotor is needed. MRM (Magnetic Resonance Microscopy) was applied for obtaining structural and spatially localized metabolic information of the samples inside the HRMAS rotors. The tissue was observed stuck to the rotor wall under the effect of HRMAS spinning. MRM spectroscopy showed a transference of metabolites from the tissue to the medium. The sample shape and the metabolite transfer after HRMAS indicated that tissue had undergone alterations and it can not be s…
