Disordered and Frustrated Spin Systems

2007

A brief review on the effects of quenched disorder on magnetic ordering is given. This disorder can be due to dilution of a ferro- or antiferromagnetic crystal with nonmagnetic atoms, or due to noncrystallinity (amorphous magnetic systems). This disorder in the positions of the magnetic atoms leads to disorder in the exchange interactions between spins. If the disorder is sufficiently weak, the critical temperature of magnetic ordering is somewhat decreased, and the critical behavior may change, but the nature of ordering is maintained. However, if the disorder is sufficiently strong, magnetic long-range order may disappear altogether at a percolation threshold, or a new type of order may a…

Laser spectroscopy studies on nobelium

2017

Laser spectroscopy of the heaviest elements provides high-precision data on their atomic and nuclear properties. For example, atomic level energies and ionization potentials allow us to probe the influence of relativistic effects on their atomic structure and to benchmark state-of-the-art atomic structure calculations. In addition, it offers an alternative route to determine nuclear properties like spins, magnetic moments and quadrupole moments in a nuclear model-independent way. Recently, a sensitive method based on resonant laser ionization has been applied to nobelium isotopes around N = 152 at GSI Darmstadt. In pioneering experiments, several atomic states have been identified extending…

Intermolecular interaction energies and magnetic properties of spin-isolated multinuclear CuII complexes

2020

Dinuclear CuII complexes with 3,5-dinitrobenzoates and 2,2′-bipyridine (2) or 1,10-phenanthroline (3) were synthesized and characterized. A complete energy framework analysis using the HF/3-21G energy model was performed which found that dispersion forces and C—H...O interactions are responsible for the crystal structure features. The magnetic properties of the complexes show a weak magnetic exchange between spins, resulting in low exchange constants of −2.72 (1) cm−1 and −1.10 (1) cm−1 for complexes (2) and (3), respectively. This results from the low overlap between magnetic orbitals induced by 3,5-dinitrobenzoate bridges and the arrangement of the magnetic orbitals. Consequently, the din…

Small clusters with anisotropic antiferromagnetic exchange in a magnetic field

2004

We consider small symmetric clusters of magnetic atoms (spins) with anisotropic exchange interaction between the atoms in a magnetic field at zero temperature. The inclusion of the anisotropy leads to a wealth of different phases as a function of the applied magnetic field. These are not phases in the thermodynamic sense with critical properties but rather physical structures with different arrangements of the spins and hence different symmetries. We study the spatial symmetry of these phases, for the classical and quantum cases. Results are presented mainly for three frustrated systems, the triangle, the tetrahedron and the five-atom ring, which have many interesting features. In the class…

Resolving the Fundamentals of Magnetotransport in Metals with Ultrafast Terahertz Spectroscopy

2016

Using terahertz spectroscopy we directly resolved the fundamentals of spin-dependent conductivity in ferromagnetic metals. We quantified the differences in conduction by Fermi-level electrons with opposite spins on the sub-100 fs timescale of electron momentum scattering.

Non-Markovian dynamics of interacting qubit pair coupled to two independent bosonic baths

2009

The dynamics of two interacting spins coupled to separate bosonic baths is studied. An analytical solution in Born approximation for arbitrary spectral density functions of the bosonic environments is found. It is shown that in the non-Markovian cases concurrence "lives" longer or reaches greater values.

Dynamical susceptibility from simulations of a mean field Potts glass

2004

Abstract We present results of the non-linear dynamic susceptibility χ(t) in a mean field Potts glass from simulations in a wide range of temperatures above the theoretically predicted dynamical transition, for various system sizes up to 2560 spins. χ(t) has a maximum, with a height that diverges like (T−TD)−α, with α≈1. The timescale t ∗ associated with this maximum also approaches a singularity, and we show that its behavior is compatible with the relaxation time of the standard time-dependent spin autocorrelation function, also with respect to finite size effects. We find that χ(t) for temperatures near the transition temperature TD satisfies a dynamical scaling property.

n-cluster models in a transverse magnetic field

2017

In this paper we analize a family of one dimensional fully analytically solvable models, named the n-cluster models in a transverse magnetic field, in which a many-body cluster interaction competes with a uniform transverse magnetic field. These models, independently by the cluster size n + 2, exibit a quantum phase transition, that separates a paramagnetic phase from a cluster one, that corresponds to a nematic ordered phase or a symmetry-protected topological ordered phase for even or odd n respectively. Due to the symmetries of the spin correlation functions, we prove that these models have no genuine n+2-partite entanglement. On the contrary, a non vanishing concurrence arises between s…

Identification of clusters of companies in stock indices via Potts super-paramagnetic transitions

2000

The clustering of companies within a specific stock market index is studied by means of super-paramagnetic transitions of an appropriate q-state Potts model where the spins correspond to companies and the interactions are functions of the correlation coefficients determined from the time dependence of the companies' individual stock prices. The method is a generalization of the clustering algorithm by Domany et. al. to the case of anti-ferromagnetic interactions corresponding to anti-correlations. For the Dow Jones Industrial Average where no anti-correlations were observed in the investigated time period, the previous results obtained by different tools were well reproduced. For the Standa…

First observation of excited states in 108Sb

1995

A spectroscopic study of Sb-108 has been carried out as a part of a larger experiment where in total twenty-nine different residual nuclei were identified. This study gives the first information on excited levels in this nucleus. A low-lying two-quasi-particle multiplet together with some of the higher lying levels are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. A rotational, strongly coupled, band is identified as, most likely, being built on the deformed pig9/2(-1) nuh11/2 configuration in accordance with total routhian surface calculations. Tentative spins and parities are presented as well as B(M1)/B(E2) ratios for some of the transitions in the strongly coupled band.
