One of the most fascinating aspects of the immune system is its dynamism, meant as the ability to change and readapt according to the organism needs. 310 mannliche, 130 bis 180 g schwere Albinoratten erhielten als Rontgen-Ganzkorperbestrahlung 1×600 r oder 10×3 r+1×600 r mit folgenden Ergebnissen: 1. ACTH-Eosinopenie nach Splenektomie und Blockade des RES

Es wird uber ACTH-Versuche an Meerschweinchen bei verschiedenem Funktionszustand des RES berichtet. Splenektomierte, splenektomiert und zusatzlich mit 6 cm3 sowie mit 18 cm3 Trypanblau blockierte Tiere zeigten jedesmal ein deutliches Absinken der Eosinophilen im peripheren Blut nach Injektion von 10 mg ACTH. Eine Aufhebung oder Abschwachung des eosinopenischen Effektes durch die Funktionseinschrankung des RES wurde nicht beobachtet.

Ptak and Askenase showed that both alphabeta and gammadelta cells are required for transfer of contact sensitivity (CS). This study confirms that day 4 immune cells depleted of gammadelta cells fail to transfer CS to trinitrochlorobenzene (TNP-Cl) systemically and demonstrates that administration of anti-gammadelta monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in vivo abolishes the CS reaction. Moreover, gammadelta cells accumulate at the antigen challenge site: these cells have the unusual phenotype CD8alpha+, CD8beta-, IL-4 R+ which we suggest is due to their state of activation. Characterization of a multimeric polypeptide complex on the surface of thymus-derived cells in the Mexican axolotl.

We previously raised a rabbit antiserum (L12) against a 38 kD polypeptide which is expressed on the surface of thymocytes and peripheral T cells of an Urodele Amphibian, the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). Here we show that L12 antibodies immunoprecipitate several labelled molecules from surface iodinated axolotl spleen cells, including the 38 kD molecule, but also two polypeptides of 43 and 22 kD which are covalently linked to other elements. AIM OF STUDY The haemodynamic role of the spleen in portal hypertension remains unclear. Duplex sonography was undertaken prospectively to discover the relationship of splenomegaly and splenic vein flow to type and severity of liver cirrhosis and portal vein flow, as well as to the degree of oesophageal varices. PATIENTS AND METHODS 89 patients (54 men, 35 women; mean age 52 [26-81] years), diagnosed in the second half of 1993 as having liver cirrhosis were consecutively included in the study. Splenic respiratory gas exchange and glucose uptake in patients with splenomegaly in hypersplenism and Hodgkin's disease.

Blood samples are taken from the splenic artery, vein and pulp of patients suffering from Hodgkin's disease (n=10) or hypersplenism (n=7) and undergoing splenectomy. In these samples, the relevant parameters of the respiratory gas exchange as well as glucose and lactate concentrations are determined. In hypersplenism (mean splenic wet weight: 543 g) the mean oxygen consumption of the splenic tissue amounts to 0.9 ml O2/100 g/min taking into account a mean splenic blood flow of 80 ml/100 g/min. The glucose uptake and the lactate release are 9 mg/100 g/min and 5.5 mg/100 g/min, respectively.
