A spline-based non-linear diffeomorphism for multimodal prostate registration.

2012

This paper presents a novel method for non-rigid registration of transrectal ultrasound and magnetic resonance prostate images based on a non-linear regularized framework of point correspondences obtained from a statistical measure of shape-contexts. The segmented prostate shapes are represented by shape-contexts and the Bhattacharyya distance between the shape representations is used to find the point correspondences between the 2D fixed and moving images. The registration method involves parametric estimation of the non-linear diffeomorphism between the multimodal images and has its basis in solving a set of non-linear equations of thin-plate splines. The solution is obtained as the least…

A flexible approach to the crossing hazards problem

2010

We propose a simple and flexible framework for the crossing hazards problem. The method is not confined to two-sample problems, but may also work with continuous exposure variables whose effect changes its sign at some time-point of the observed follow-up time. Penalized partial likelihood estimation relies upon the assumption of a smooth hazard ratio via low-rank basis splines with a conventional difference penalty to ensure smoothness, and additional ad hoc penalties to obtain restricted estimates useful in the context of crossing hazards. The framework naturally also leads to a statistical test that has good power for revealing a global effect under several alternatives, including crossi…

Error bounds for a convexity-preserving interpolation and its limit function

2008

AbstractError bounds between a nonlinear interpolation and the limit function of its associated subdivision scheme are estimated. The bounds can be evaluated without recursive subdivision. We show that this interpolation is convexity preserving, as its associated subdivision scheme. Finally, some numerical experiments are presented.

On the use of a meshless solver for PDEs governing electromagnetic transients

2009

In this paper some key elements of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics methodology suitably reformulated for analyzing electromagnetic transients are investigated. The attention is focused on the interpolating smoothing kernel function which strongly influences the computational results. Some issues are provided by adopting the polynomial reproducing conditions. Validation tests involving Gaussian and cubic B-spline smoothing kernel functions in one and two dimensions are reported.

On smoothing problems with one additional equality condition

2009

Two problems of approximation in Hilbert spaces are considered with one additional equality condition: the smoothing problem with a weight and the smoothing problem with an obstacle. This condition is a generalization of the equality, which appears in the problem of approximation of a histogram in a natural way. We characterize the solutions of these smoothing problems and investigate the connection between them. First published online: 14 Oct 2010

Gradient-based shape optimisation of ultra-wideband antennas parameterised using splines

2010

Methodology enabling the gradient-based optimisation of antennas parameterised using B-splines is presented. Use of the spline parametrisation allows us to obtain versatile new shapes, whereas the geometry can be represented with a small set of design variables. Moreover, good control over admissible geometries is retained. Advantages of gradient-based optimisation methods are quick convergence, and the fact that the obtained design can be guaranteed to be a local optimum. Focus of this study is to present techniques that enable the computation of exact gradients of the discrete problem, even though the complexity of the geometries does not permit establishing analytical expressions for the…

Computing continuous numerical solutions of matrix differential equations

1995

Abstract In this paper, we construct analytical approximate solutions of initial value problems for the matrix differential equation X ′( t ) = A ( t ) X ( t ) + X ( t ) B ( t ) + L ( t ), with twice continuously differentiable functions A ( t ), B ( t ), and L ( t ), continuous. We determine, in terms of the data, the existence interval of the problem. Given an admissible error e, we construct an approximate solution whose error is smaller than e uniformly, in all the domain.

Predicting sediment deposition rate in check-dams using machine learning techniques and high-resolution DEMs

2021

Sediments accumulated in check dams are a valuable measure to estimate soil erosion rates. Here, geographic information systems (GIS) and three machine learning techniques (MARS-multivariate adaptive regression splines, RF-random forest and SVM-support vector machine) were used, for the first time, to predict sediment deposition rate (SR) in check-dams located in six watersheds in SW Spain. There, 160 dry-stone check dams (~ 77.8 check-dams km−2), accumulated sediments during a period that varied from 11 to 23 years. The SR was estimated in former research using a topographical method and a high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) (average of 0.14 m3 ha−1 year−1). Nine environmental-to…

Effects of different simplified milk recording methods on genetic evaluation with Test-Day animal model

2007

The aims of the present study were to compare estimated breeding values (EBV) for milk yield using different testing schemes with a test-day animal model and to evaluate the effect of different testing schemes on the ranking of top sheep. Alternative recording schemes that use less information than that currently obtained with a monthly test-day schedule were employed to estimate breeding values. A random regression animal mixed model that used a spline function of days in milk was fitted. EBVs obtained with alternative recording schemes showed different degrees of Spearman correlation with EBVs obtained using the monthly recording scheme. These correlations ranged from 0.77 to 0.92. A redu…

Exploring the effect of absence selection on landslide susceptibility models: A case study in Sicily, Italy

2016

Abstract A statistical approach was employed to model the spatial distribution of rainfall-triggered landslides in two areas in Sicily (Italy) that occurred during the winter of 2004–2005. The investigated areas are located within the Belice River basin and extend for 38.5 and 10.3 km 2 , respectively. A landslide inventory was established for both areas using two Google Earth images taken on October 25th 2004 and on March 18th 2005, to map slope failures activated or reactivated during this interval. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to prepare 5 m grids of the dependent variables (absence/presence of landslide) and independent variables (lithology and 13 DEM-derivatives). Mul…
