Marine sponges are a very attractive and rich source in the production of novel bioactive compounds. The sponges exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities. The genus Amphimedon consists of various species, such as viridis, compressa, complanata, and terpenensis, along with a handful of undescribed species. The Amphimedon genus is a rich source of secondary metabolites containing diverse chemical classes, including alkaloids, ceramides, cerebrososides, and terpenes, with various valuable biological activities. This review covers the literature from January 1983 until January 2018 and provides a complete survey of all the compounds isolated from the genus Amphimedon and the associate…

Dispacamide E and other bioactive bromopyrrole alkaloids from two Indonesian marine sponges of the genus Stylissa.

2014

Chemical investigation of methanolic extracts of the two Indonesian marine sponges Stylissa massa and Stylissa flabelliformis yielded 25 bromopyrrole alkaloids including 2 new metabolites. The structures of all isolated compounds were unambiguously elucidated based on extensive 1D and 2D NMR, LR-MS and HR-MS analyses. All isolated compounds were assayed for their antiproliferative and protein kinase inhibitory activities. Several of the tested compounds revealed selective activity(ies) which suggested preliminary SARs of the isolated bromopyrrole alkaloids.

Construction and evaluation of sponge scaffolds from hyaluronic acid derivatives for potential cartilage regeneration

2020

A two or one pot synthesis has been used for the reaction of hyaluronic acid (HA) with octadecylamine (C-18) and hydrazine (Hy). In both cases, the chemical derivatization involved primary hydroxyl groups of hyaluronic acid and not its carboxyl groups, whose presence is important for receptor interaction. In this way, Hy-HA-C-18 derivatives have been obtained with appropriate hydrophobic and hydrophilic character. Their ability to form homogeneous physical hydrogels has been evaluated as well as the possibility to obtain porous sponges through salt leaching technology. Sponges showing the highest porosity, potentially compatible with cell entrapment, have been characterized with regard to t…

Polystyrene as Graphene Film and 3D Graphene Sponge Precursor

2019

[EN] Polystyrene as a thin film on arbitrary substrates or pellets form defective graphene/graphitic films or powders that can be dispersed in water and organic solvents. The materials were characterized by visible absorption, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron and atomic force microscopy, and electrochemistry. Raman spectra of these materials showed the presence of the expected 2D, G, and D peaks at 2750, 1590, and 1350 cm(-1), respectively. The relative intensity of the G versus the D peak was taken as a quantitative indicator of the density of defects in the G layer.

Biocalcite, a multifunctional inorganic polymer: Building block for calcareous sponge spicules and bioseed for the synthesis of calcium phosphate-bas…

2014

Calcium carbonate is the material that builds up the spicules of the calcareous sponges. Recent results revealed that the calcium carbonate/biocalcite-based spicular skeleton of these animals is formed through an enzymatic mechanism, such as the skeleton of the siliceous sponges, evolutionarily the oldest animals that consist of biosilica. The enzyme that mediates the calcium carbonate deposition has been identified as a carbonic anhydrase (CA) and has been cloned from the calcareous sponge species Sycon raphanus. Calcium carbonate deposits are also found in vertebrate bones besides the main constituent, calcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite (HA). Evidence has been presented that during the init…

New Generation of Zeolite Materials for Environmental Applications.

2016

International audience; The influence of the morphology (microcrystals, nanocrystals, nanosponges and nanosheets) of MFI and *BEA-type zeolites on their adsorption capacities and adsorption rate of n-hexane at 25 ˚C has been investigated. The capacity of n-hexane adsorption sensitive to micro- and mesopore volume is enhanced by the use of zeolite nanocrystals or hierar-chical nanoporous materials (nanosheets and nanosponges). In the case of hierarchical zeolites MFI and *BEA nano-sponges, the n-hexane adsorption capacities reached values of about 790 and 693 mg/g, respectively, that are much higher than those in the corresponding microcrystals (130 and 103 mg/g, respectively). On the opposi…

Organo-Clay Nanomaterials Based on Halloysite and Cyclodextrin as Carriers for Polyphenolic Compounds

2018

Hybrid material based on halloysite covalently linked to a hyper-reticulated cyclodextrin network was investigated as a potential carrier for polyphenolic compounds. The absorption ability of the hybrid system was studied in different pH conditions as well as the kinetic release of curcumin, chosen as a drug model. A preliminary study was performed to assess the antioxidant capacity of the obtained carrier. The obtained results highlighted that the curcumin molecule can have sustained release from the carrier over the time, retaining its antioxidant properties due to the combination of two different host systems that give rise to an hyper-reticulated structure, allowing an increase in the d…

Trans-visceral migration of retained surgical gauze as a cause of intestinal obstruction: a case report

2008

AbstractIntroductionA retained surgical sponge in the abdomen is uncommon although it is likely that this finding is underreported in the medical literature. The intravisceral migration of retained surgical gauze is even rarer, as demonstrated by the very few cases reported.Case presentationThree years after undergoing anterior resection of the rectum, a 75-year-old man presented with symptoms of small bowel obstruction. Plain abdominal radiography and CT showed a radio-opaque marker; a foreign body was suspected, probably a piece of retained surgical gauze. An ileotomy of about 5 cm. was performed to confirm this diagnosis and remove the gauze.ConclusionAlthough rare, retained gauze in the…

Origin of metazoan stem cell system in sponges: first approach to establish the model (Suberites domuncula).

2003

Abstract It is established that Porifera (sponges) represent the earliest phylum which branched off from the common ancestor of all multicellular animals, the Urmetazoa. In the present study, the hypothesis is tested if, during this transition, pluripotent stem cells were formed which are provided—similar to the totipotent cells (archaeocytes/germ cells)—with a self-renewal capacity. As a model system, primmorphs from the sponge Suberites domuncula were used. These 3D-cell aggregates were cultivated in medium (RPMI 1640/seawater) either lacking silicate and ferric iron or in medium which was supplemented with these ‘morphogenetic’ factors. As molecular markers for the potential existence of…

Oxygen as a morphogenic factor in sponges: expression of a tyrosinase gene in the sponge Suberites domuncula

2004

Sponges live in a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms, especially bacteria. Here we show, using the demosponge Suberites domuncula as a model, that the sponge expresses the enzyme tyrosinase which synthesizes diphenols from monophenolic compounds. It is assumed that these products serve as carbon source for symbiotic bacteria to grow.
