Se estudia la caracterización limnológica de 30 lagunas del bosque tropical seco de Costa Rica y Nicaragua durante 2010-11. Se aislaron gémulas de esponjas de agua dulce en cuatro de las localidades. Se registraron dos nuevas citas de esponjas para Nicaragua, Radiospongilla cerebellata (Bowerbank, 1863) y Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera (Ezcurra de Drago, 1974). En Costa Rica también se registró esta última y se recolectaron ejemplares de Radiospongilla crateriformis (Potts, 1882). En otra laguna de Costa Rica, se recolectó una larva de neuróptero (Insecta) de la familia Sisyridae asociada a las esponjas: Sisyra apicalis Banks, 1908. Selenium affects biosilica formation in the demosponge Suberites domuncula

Selenium is a trace element found in freshwater and the marine environment. We show that it plays a major role in spicule formation in the demosponge Suberites domuncula. If added to primmorphs, an in vitro sponge cell culture system, it stimulates the formation of siliceous spicules. Using differential display of transcripts, we demonstrate that, after a 72-h exposure of primmorphs to selenium, two genes are up-regulated; one codes for selenoprotein M and the other for a novel spicule-associated protein. The sponge-dominated Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) reefs of Sicily yielded the most abundant hypercalcified sponge taxa compared with other time equivalent reefs in the world. Chambered sponges (“Sphinctozoa”) are the most abundant group among the hypercalcified sponges. Protein kinases C (PKCs) comprise closely related Ser/Thr kinases, ubiquitously present in animal tissues ; they respond to second messengers, e.g., Ca2+ and/or diacylglycerol, to express their activities. Two PKCs have been sequenced from Geodia cydonium, a member of the lowest multicellular animals, the sponges (Porifera). One sponge G. cydonium PKC, GCPKC1, belongs to the ''novel'' (Ca2+-independent) PKC (nPKC) subfamily while the second one, GCPKC2, has the hall-marks of the ''conventional'' (Ca2+-dependent) PKC (cPKC) subfamily. We read with great interest the article by Gazzeri et al1 focusing on tissue-glue–coated collagen sponge (TachoSil) application to repair minor cerebral dural sinus lacerations. In their series, 57 consecutive patients were prospectively enrolled, and tears of the cerebral venous sinus were treated by TachoSil application directly to the site of the bleeding. In all patients, venous bleeding was managed initially by standard techniques for hemostasis such as compression, application of oxidized cellulose, or gelatin sponge. New calixarene-based nanosponges (CaNSs), i.e., hyper-reticulated polymers constituted by calixarene monomer units joined by means of bis(1,2,3-trialzolyl)alkyl linkers, were synthesized, characterized and subjected to preliminary tests to assess their supramolecular absorption abilities towards a set of suitable organic guests, selected as pollutant models. Polyaminoazide mixtures for the synthesis of pH-responsive calixarene nanosponges

Two mixtures of polyaminoazides were synthesized by a nucleophilic displacement strategy providing no separation of the components. The mixtures were adequately characterized by means of combined HR-ESIMS, FTIR and NMR techniques and, despite their complexity, they were successfully used to accomplish the subsequent preparation of pH-sensitive calixarene hyper-reticulated nanosponge materials. The desired responsivity to pH variations of the nanosponges obtained was verified by means of absorption tests on a set of organic pollutant model molecules.
