Distribution, frequency and diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis in olive tree environments in Spain

1997

Summary Bacillus thuringiensis was isolated from samples collected from olive tree related habitats (olive groves, olive storage facilities and oil mills) of different olive producing regions in Spain. This bacterium was found in a high percentage (92%) of samples. From 72 samples analysed, 2244 sporulating colonies were selected and observed under phase contrast microscopy. From these, 414 colonies (18%) were classified as B. thuringiensis based on the production of parasporal crystals. A great variability of spore, crystal size and morphology was observed. The results indicate that olive groves are as rich as soil olive mills and olive storage facilities regarding the B. thuringiensis pop…

Generation of homozygosity and genome fixation in pea (Pisum sativum L.)

2013

Pea cultivars are nearly homozygous and thus homogeneous when they are released. The traditional method of selfing is slow and inefficient, taking up to ten generations of inbreeding following a cross to achieve a high level of homozygosity. Current single-seed-descent (SSD) methodologies enable a maximum of three generations per year to be developed in pea. Doubled haploidy and an in vitro based modified SSD technology have been utilised in many important crops for the rapid achievement of homozygosity, and thus acceleration of the breeding process. In pea, due to the lack of robust protocols, none of these technologies is routinely used in a breeding program. The aim of this study was to …

Characterisation of Pythium paroecandrum and its antagonism towards Botrytis cinerea, the causative agent of grey mould disease of grape.

2004

Pythium paroecandrum (B-30), an oomycete, was isolated from soil samples taken from a wheat field in Genlis in the Burgundy region of France and was found to check the growth and development of Botrytis cinerea, a serious grapevine pathogen. The oomycete is a fast-growing organism, living on vegetable debris, and can be recognised by its catenulate hyphal swellings, catenulate oogonia, and monoclinous antheridia. When grown together with B. cinerea, the causal agent of the grey mould disease of the grapevine, P. paroecandrum shows a pronounced antagonism and suppresses its growth and its aptitude to provoke the grey mould symptoms. Morphological features of this oomycete, its antagonism to …

Assessment of antifungal activity of extracts from nettle (Urtica dioica L.) against Alternaria solani = Ocena aktywności przeciwgrzybowej ekstraktów…

2015

(Urtica dioica L.) w stężeniach 2,5, 5,0, 10,0, 20,0, 40,0% wobec fitopatogennego szczepu Alternaria solani.

Dead wood and fungi : detection, diversity and conservation in boreal forests

2018

Dead wood and associated fungal communities are a crucial part of boreal forest ecosystems, and severely affected and threatened by human actions like commercial timber harvesting. Despite their importance for forest functioning, most wood-inhabiting fungal species, especially those producing small fruit bodies, are still ecologically and taxonomically poorly known. In addition, studies on dead wood profiles have neglected fine woody debris. This thesis includes detailed investigations of fruiting phenology of different morphological groups and complete dead wood profile of one semi-natural boreal forest. In addition, the diversity patterns of wood-inhabiting fungal communities according fo…

Data from: Give me a sample of air and I will tell which species are found from your region – molecular identification of fungi from airborne spore s…

2018

Fungi are a megadiverse group of organisms, they play major roles in ecosystem functioning, and are important for human health, food production, and nature conservation. Our knowledge on fungal diversity and fungal ecology is however still very limited, in part because surveying and identifying fungi is time demanding and requires expert knowledge. We present a method that allows anyone to generate a list of fungal species likely to occur in a region of interest, with minimal effort and without requiring taxonomical expertise. The method consists of using a cyclone sampler to acquire fungal spores directly from the air to an Eppendorf tube, and applying DNA barcoding with probabilistic spec…

Standardisation of methods for assessing mould germination: a workshop report.

2006

International audience; The first workshop on predictive mycology was held in Marseille, France, 2–4 February 2005 under the auspices of the French Microbiological Society. The purpose of the workshop was to list the different techniques and definitions used by scientists for assessing mould germination and to evaluate the influence of the different techniques on the experimental results. Recommendations were made when a large consensus was obtained. In order to facilitate the study of germination, alternative methods to microscopic examination were examined.

The life cicle of Plasmopara viticola

2000

Plasmopara viticola (Berk. & M. A. Curtis) Bed. & De Toni is an obligate biotrophic oomycetous organism which causes downy mildew of grape vine. An understanding of its life-cycle is essential in relation to the pathology and epidemiology, and for the development of better control of the disease. It overwinters as oospores within fallen leaves.
