Gender Representation of Athletes in Finnish and Swedish Tabloids : A quantitative and qualitative content analysis of Athens 2004 and Turin 2006 Oly…

2016

AbstractThe study examines quantitatively and qualitatively gender representation in Finnish and Swedish tabloids’ sports coverage during Athens 2004 summer and Turin 2006 winter Olympics. Several media studies argue that sports journalism marginalises women’s sports and sexualises female athletes. The results of this study show that male athletes received more coverage than female athletes in every tabloid, but when the number of domestic participants and their level of success were considered, neither country’s tabloids quantitatively marginalised women’s sports. Qualitative analysis found that research stereotypes showing trivialisation and sexualisation of female athletes were incorrect…

Longitudinal trajectories of emotions among athletes in sports competitions: Does emotional intelligence matter?

2021

Abstract Objectives This research explored whether several subgroups of athletes representing distinct emotional trajectories could be shown to exist within the latent class growth analysis (LCGA) of pleasant and unpleasant sport emotions (anger, anxiety, dejection, excitement, happiness). A secondary aim was to explore whether athletes belonging to distinct emotional trajectories reported distinct scores of trait-emotional intelligence (EI) at time 1 (T1). Design A longitudinal three-wave measurement design (beginning, middle, and end of a competitive season) was used in the present study. Method A sample of 460 athletes completed the sport emotion questionnaire across three measurement ti…

2021

The purpose of this study was to investigate blood-based biomarkers and their regulation with regard to different recovery-stress states. A total of 35 male elite athletes (13 badminton, 22 soccer players) were recruited, and two venous blood samples were taken: one in a ‘recovered’ state (REC) after a minimum of one-day rest from exercise and another one in a ‘non-recovered’ state (NOR) after a habitual loading microcycle. Overall, 23 blood-based biomarkers of different physiologic domains, which address inflammation, muscle damage, and tissue repair, were analyzed by Luminex assays. Across all athletes, only creatine kinase (CK), interleukin (IL-) 6, and IL-17A showed higher concentration…

Coaches’ implementation strategies in providing social support to Singaporean university athletes: A case study

2019

Coaches are effective providers of social support to their athletes. Although sport-specific measures of social support have been developed to better understand athletes’ perceptions of available support, limited amount of research has addressed how sport coaches implement specific social support strategies. The purpose of this study was to examine university coaches’ implementation strategies in providing various forms of social support to their athletes. A total of eight sport coaches from team and individual sports (four from each sport) were purposefully selected for this study. Coaches were individually interviewed. The interview transcripts were analysed using a thematic analysis. Th…

Exercise Training and Fasting: Current Insights

2020

Fasting is defined as the abstinence from consuming food and/or beverages for different periods of time. Both traditional and modern healthcare systems recommend fasting as a therapeutic intervention for the management of several chronic, non-infectious diseases. Exercising during a fasting state increases lipolysis in adipose tissue while also stimulating peripheral fat oxidation, resulting in increased fat utilization and weight loss. A key focus of this review is to assess whether endurance training performed while fasting induces specific training adaptations, where increased fat oxidation improves long-term endurance levels. Fasting decreases body weight, lean body and fat content in b…

Psychobiosocial Experiences in Sport : Development and Initial Validation of a Semantic Differential Scale

2021

Abstract Objectives To develop and validate the Psychobiosocial Experience Semantic Differential scale in sport (PESD-Sport), a new measure to assess discrete emotions and performance-related experiences in sport as conceptualized within the individual zones of optimal functioning (IZOF; Hanin, 2000, 2007, 2010) framework. Method In Study 1, we developed a preliminary 53-item version of the scale using a semantic differential format in the construction of the items pertaining to 12 psychobiosocial modalities. We chose this format to attain a clear representation of psychobiosocial states between opposites along perceived performance functionality (i.e., functional, dysfunctional). The preli…

Sports and Community Well-Being

2017

This chapter explores the relationship between sports and community well-being, taking into account factors such as social bonds, social and cultural integration, health, improved quality of life, and the enhancement of personal and community well-being. Well-being is a concept with a long history and development. Originally used in the field of philosophy, it then spread to psychology. Community well-being is a relatively recent, little-explored term, which builds on the concepts of well-being and quality of life. This chapter provides a theoretical assessment based on the concepts of well-being, community well-being, and sports, distinguishing the latter from mere physical activity. Final…

Physical Education Pedagogy: an analysis of research published in Spanish journals (2005–2014)

2016

ABSTRACTBackground: The majority of reviews related to Physical Education Pedagogy (PEP) refer to the English-speaking world. Some of these assert the need to obtain more data and provide reviews of what has been investigated in languages other than English to be able to assess the current state of the field internationally.Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify, categorise, and analyse articles on PEP published in Spanish sport science journals during the last decade (2005–2014).Participants and setting: A total of 13 journals were selected: 8 were indexed in the Scopus databases, and 5 were added based on expert judgement due to their importance in the field of Spanish PEP.Researc…

Career development and transitions of athletes : the International Society of Sport Psychology Position Stand Revisited

2020

This paper is a comprehensive update of the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) Position Stand on career development and transitions of athletes issued a decade ago (Stambulova, Alfermann, Statler, & Côté, 2009, ISSP Position Stand: Career development and transitions of athletes. International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, 7, 395–412.). A need for updating the 2009 Position Stand has grown out of the increasing inconsistency between its popularity and high citation, on the one hand, and its dated content that inadequately reflects the current status of athlete career research and assistance, on the other. During the last decade, sport psychology career scholars work…
