Functional properties of motor units in motor neuron diseases and neuropathies.

The relationship between the size of single motor unit (MU) action potentials and their twitch properties was estimated in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA, n = 5) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, n = 10), as well as in patients with peripheral nerve lesions (PNL, n = 9). The data obtained from these groups were compared to normal controls (n = 8). In controls, the single MU twitch force was highly correlated to the corresponding EMG potential size in terms of macro EMG area. In vitro response of two Sicilian genotypes of Morus (L.) through axillary bud culture.

A protocol for the in vitro establishment of two Sicilian genotypes of mulberry has been set up. Multiple shoots were initiated and plantlets were produced from buds collected from mature trees of Morus alba L. and Morus nigra L., grown in the field. The influence of two explanting times (September and December) of buds on the in vitro response has been observed. The percentage of sprouting after four weeks of culture was greatly higher with material explanted from the field in September compared with the one collected in December. Gibberellic acid and flower bud development in loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.)

The application of gibberellic acid (GA 3) to the whole loquat tree from mid-May to early June and from early August to the onset of flowering, significantly reduced the number of premature flowering shoots per current shoot and per m 3 of canopy, and so reduced the total number of panicles per m 3 of canopy. The number of vegetative shoots per m 3 of canopy was also significantly reduced by applying GA 3. The response depended on the concentration applied and produced optimal results at 50mgl -1. Loss of input from the mossy cells blocks maturation of newly generated granule cells.

The objective of this work is to check whether the input from the mossy cells to the inner molecular layer is necessary for the integration and maturation of the newly generated granule cells of the dentate gyrus (DG) in mice, and if after status epilepticus the sprouting of the mossy fibers can substitute for this projection. Newly generated cells were labeled by administration of 5-bromo-deoxyuridine either before or after pilocarpine administration. Temperature regulating floral bud differentiation in loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.). Hormonal and genetic aspects

In loquat, apex of a current shoot changes from vegetative to reproductive stage during summer, i.e. under high temperature conditions. Indeed, just before floral bud differentiation, a decline in the growth rate due to high temperature takes place. Nodal segments from root shoots were established in vitro in a Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with several cytokinins. Fruit Regulates Bud Sprouting and Vegetative Growth in Field-Grown Loquat Trees (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.): Nutritional and Hormonal Changes

The effects of fruit on bud sprouting and vegetative growth were compared on fruiting and defruited loquat trees from fruit set onward. Carbohydrate and nitrogen content in leaves and bark tissues and hormone concentrations were studied during the fruit development and vegetative growth periods. On defruited trees, a significant proportion of buds sprouted in winter, whereas buds from fruiting trees sprouted only in the spring when fruit reached its final size. Furthermore, when panicles were completely removed in autumn, the buds also sprouted. In addition, fruit directly affected vegetative growth by reducing shoot length. Sprouting and intussusceptive angiogenesis in postpneumonectomy lung growth: mechanisms of alveolar neovascularization

In most rodents and some other mammals, the removal of one lung results in compensatory growth associated with dramatic angiogenesis and complete restoration of lung capacity. One pivotal mechanism in neoalveolarization is neovascularization, because without angiogenesis new alveoli can not be formed. The aim of this study is to image and analyze three-dimensionally the different patterns of neovascularization seen following pneumonectomy in mice on a sub-micron-scale.
