The Role of Palliative Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Spinal Bone Metastases from Head and Neck Tumors-A Multicenter Analysis of a Rare Event.

2020

This retrospective multi-center analysis aimed to assess the clinical response and stabilizing effects of palliative radiotherapy (RT) for spinal bone metastases (SBM) in head and neck cancer (HNC), and to establish potential predictive factors for stability and overall survival (OS). Patients included in this analysis were treated at the University Hospitals of Mainz, Freiburg, and Heidelberg between 2001 and 2019. Clinical information was taken from the medical records. The stability of affected vertebral bodies was assessed according to the validated spine instability neoplastic score (SINS) based on CT-imaging before RT, as well as 3 and 6 months after RT. OS was quantified as the time …

The Latomiae of Syracuse: A Geotechnical Mapping Through Rock Reflectivity

2014

The archeological site of the Latomia del Paradiso (Syracuse) is endangered by severe instability phenomena due to the shape of walls and underground excava-tion related with the poor mechanical characteristics of the weathered and wet rock. The failure of huge blocks from the ceiling of the underground areas and the detaching of rock "flakes" from the walls surface make the geotechnical zon-ing particularly complex. the zoning is based on the characteristics of the rock wall surface that, in first approximation, can be distinguished in regularized sur-faces because of mining , and in irregular surfaces characterized by fracture prop-agation. The elaboration of reflectivity values obtained …

Pressure and temperature dependence of the lattice dynamics ofCuAlO2investigated by Raman scattering experiments andab initiocalculations

2006

We have studied the vibrational properties of $\mathrm{Cu}\mathrm{Al}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ by means of Raman scattering in ambient conditions, at low temperature, and also at high pressure. Results are discussed in the framework of an ab initio calculation. Raman active modes have wave numbers ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{{E}_{g}}=418.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{{A}_{1g}}=767.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Polarized measurements with single crystals have confirmed their symmetry. We present and discuss the phonon-dispersion curves. Below $200\phant…

Expectations and the term premium as time varying leading indicators of US economic activity

2009

This paper investigates the growth predictive properties of the expectation-related and term premium components of the US term spread. Results suggest that although the predictive power of two components has greater predictive power compared to the simple spread, it has a time-varying nature. The expectations-related term is positive and statistically significant up to the end of the 80s becoming insignificant afterwards. The term-premium estimates are positive and significant for a brief period in the 70s, turn insignificant after the 80s, except in short intervals at the beginning of the 90s and the 2000s, when they turn negative.

Mixed Phases, Phase Transitions, Stability of Matter

2016

Phase mixtures and phase transitions are two major themes of thermodynamics. A third one, related to the former, is the stability of macroscopic matter around us. Mixed phases can be analyzed and illustrated in a nice geometric way. Phase transitions are dealt with from the point of view of classical thermodynamics as well as in the framework of models of statistical mechanics.

Modeling Atmospheric Turbulence via Rapid Distortion Theory: Spectral Tensor of Velocity and Buoyancy

2017

Abstract A spectral tensor model is presented for turbulent fluctuations of wind velocity components and temperature, assuming uniform vertical gradients in mean temperature and mean wind speed. The model is built upon rapid distortion theory (RDT) following studies by Mann and by Hanazaki and Hunt, using the eddy lifetime parameterization of Mann to make the model stationary. The buoyant spectral tensor model is driven via five parameters: the viscous dissipation rate ε, length scale of energy-containing eddies L, a turbulence anisotropy parameter , gradient Richardson number (Ri) representing the local atmospheric stability, and the rate of destruction of temperature variance . Model outp…

Validation of buoyancy driven spectral tensor model using HATS data

2016

We present a homogeneous spectral tensor model for wind velocity and temperature fluctuations, driven by mean vertical shear and mean temperature gradient. Results from the model, including one-dimensional velocity and temperature spectra and the associated co-spectra, are shown in this paper. The model also reproduces two-point statistics, such as coherence and phases, via cross-spectra between two points separated in space. Model results are compared with observations from the Horizontal Array Turbulence Study (HATS) field program (Horst et al. 2004). The spectral velocity tensor in the model is described via five parameters: the dissipation rate (), length scale of energy-containing eddi…

Exploring the co-loading of lidocaine chemical forms in surfactant/phospholipid vesicles for improved skin delivery

2015

Abstract Objectives The present study was aimed at targeting the skin to deliver lidocaine loaded in surfactant/phospholipid vesicles tailored for improved local delivery. The influence of different formulation parameters was explored to maximise drug efficacy. Methods The vesicles were prepared using a mixture of soy lipids (Phospholipon 50) and a surfactant with penetration-enhancing properties (Oramix CG110, Labrasol, Labrafac PG or Labrafac CC), and loaded with lidocaine. The formulations were analysed in detail by cryo-TEM, SAXS, Turbiscan Lab, and tested in permeation experiments through new born pig skin, as a function of the chemical form and concentration of lidocaine (i.e. free ba…

Thermal and optical switching of bistable iron compounds and possible applications

1993

Abstract Iron(II) coordination compounds with ligand field strengths close to the mean spin pairing energy may undergo thermal spin transition in the solid as well as in the liquid state. The thermodynamically stable state is high spin (HS) 5T2 (under Oh symmetry) with (t2)4 e2 electron configuration above the critical transition temperature Tc, and low spin (LS) 1A1 with (t2)6 electron configuration below Tc. The spin transition curve γHS(T) (molar fraction of HS molecules as function of temperature) can be abrupt or gradual, with or without hysteresis, or even with a plateau near Tc. Tc itself can vary over the whole temperature scale between the liquid helium region up to above room temp…
