Structural characterization of original 3D gallium structures grown by LP‐MOCVD

This study is concerned with the growth and characterization of metallic gallium 3D structures, obtained with a single growth step, by the LP-MOCVD technique on various substrates. Commercial organo-metallic is used as gallium precursor and nitrogen as carrier gas. The growth temperature and the reactor pressure are ranking between 500 and 700 °C, and between 150 and 700 torr, respectively. Depending on the elaboration conditions, different 3D structures are obtained such as droplets, cauliflowers, aggregates or thin stems, with micrometer sizes. Flux-flow instability and heating effects in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and YBa2Cu3O7 thin films

Abstract We investigated current–voltage curves of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 and YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 thin films. Voltage jumps due to flux-flow instabilities at high vortex-velocities were found and interpreted in the framework of the theory of Larkin and Ovchinnikov. The extensions introduced by Bezuglyj et al. account for quasiparticle heating during the measurement. While in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 the instability is found in the vortex-liquid phase, in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 we observed it in the vortex-glass phase. Moreover, we studied the temporal behavior of the instability in current–voltage curves with a time resolution in the microsecond range.

Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fibers With Quasi-Continuous Pump

We report the experimental observation of the polarization modulation instability (PMI) effect in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with quasi-continuous pumping. The small unintentional birefringence (~10-5), that any realistic non-polarization maintaining MOF exhibits, contributes to this nonlinear effect. PMI can produce two sidebands whose polarization state is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump. In this work, only one type of PMI process is observed, i.e., when the pump is polarized along the slow axis of the fiber and sidebands are generated in the fast axis mode. The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions

Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. Polarization mode dispersion and vectorial modulational instability in air silica microstructure fiber

The birefringence of an air-silica microstructure fiber has been studied by measurement of the fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) over the wavelength range 545-640 nm. The experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with vectorial numerical calculations, assuming an elliptical core with an eccentricity of 7%. We also report controlled experiments studying nonlinear vectorial modulation instability in the fiber, yielding 3.9-THz modulational instability sideband shifts that are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the calculated fiber dispersion and PMD characteristics.

This article is concerned with the estimation of linear regression models with uncertainty about the choice of the explanatory variables. We introduce the Stata commands bma and wals which implement, respectively, the exact Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) estimator and the Weighted Average Least Squares (WALS) estimator developed by Magnus et al. (2010). Targeting Cavity-Creating p53 Cancer Mutations with Small-Molecule Stabilizers: the Y220X Paradigm

We have previously shown that the thermolabile, cavity-creating p53 cancer mutant Y220C can be reactivated by small-molecule stabilizers. In our ongoing efforts to unearth druggable variants of the p53 mutome, we have now analyzed the effects of other cancer-associated mutations at codon 220 on the structure, stability, and dynamics of the p53 DNA-binding domain (DBD). We found that the oncogenic Y220H, Y220N, and Y220S mutations are also highly destabilizing, suggesting that they are largely unfolded under physiological conditions. Effect of cholesterol on the physical properties of pulmonary surfactant films: Atomic force measurements study

International audience; Atomic force measurements were performed on supported pulmonary surfactant (PS) films to address the effect of cholesterol on the physical properties of lung surfactant films. We recently found that cholesterol in excess of a physiological proportion abolishes surfactant function, and is the reason that surfactant fails to lower the surface tension upon compression.
