Stability of opiates in hair fibers after exposure to cosmetic treatment.

1996

Abstract The stability of opiates in clipped natural human hair was investigated. Hair fibers were incubated with defined solutions of morphine, codeine and dihydrocodeine (pH 7.4) until saturated. Original opiate-positive hair samples collected from drug addicts also were examined. Commercially available bleaching as well as perming formulas (Poly Blonde Ultra®, Poly Lock®; Henkel, Dusseldorf, Germany) were applied in vitro to the hair strands of both groups under investigation. After these treatments, the drug concentration had decreased for both bleaching and permanent waving. In the spiked hair, only 2–18% of the starting solution could be found after bleaching. About 20–30% of the drug…

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence: the effect of misperceived signalling in a network formation process

2007

Social and economic networks are becoming increasingly popular in the last ten years, because of both the application of game theory to the network formation processes4, and the study of stochastic processes that fit the statistical properties of real world social networks.5 In the very recent years there have also been attempts to combine the contribution of these two streams of research, trying to find strategic models whose equilibria resemble the empirical data.6 A well known source of debate in the game theoretical approach is the incompatibility between stability and efficiency: in most of the models Nash equilibria are actually not the network architectures that maximize the overall …

Dynamic networks of physiologic interactions of brain waves and rhythms in muscle activity.

2022

The brain plays a central role in facilitating vital body functions and in regulating physiological and organ systems, including the skeleto-muscular and locomotor system. While neural control is essential to synchronize and coordinate activation of various muscle groups and muscle fibers within muscle groups in relation to body movements and distinct physiologic states, the dynamic networks of brain-muscle interactions have not been explored and the complex regulatory mechanism of brain-muscle control remains unknown. Here we present a first study of network interactions between brain waves at different cortical locations and peripheral muscle activity across key physiologic states - wake,…

Memristors and nonequilibrium stochastic multistable systems

2022

The main aim of this special issue is to report the recent advances and new trends in memristors and nonequilibrium stochastic multistable systems, both theoretically and experimentally, within an interdisci-plinary context. In particular, memristors are multistable systems whose switching dynamics is a stochastic process, which can be controlled by internal and external noise sources, unveiling the constructive role of random fluctuations. Furthermore, the use of memristors as memory elements in neuromorphic systems with noise-assisted persistence of memory states, chaotic dynamics, metastable chaos and chaos synchronization, new stochastic nonlinear models, noise-induced phenomena such as…

Compatibility of epirubicin-loaded DC bead™ with different non-ionic contrast media

2016

Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the compatibility of epirubicin-loaded DC bead™ with different non-ionic contrast media over a period of seven days when stored light protected under refrigerated conditions. Methods DC bead™ (2 ml) (Biocompatibles UK Ltd) of the bead size 70–150 µm ( = DC bead M1) or bead size 100–300 µm were loaded with 75 mg epirubicin powder formulation (Farmorubicin® dissolved in 3 ml water for injection to a concentration of 25 mg/ml) or 76 mg epirubicin injection solution (Epimedac® 2 mg/ml) within 2 h or 6 h, respectively. After removal of the excess solution, the epirubicin-loaded beads were mixed in polypropylene syringes with an equal volume (∼1.5 ml…

Self-Heating Induced Instability of a Non-Linear Inductor in a SMPS: a Case Study

2023

This paper proposes a case study to show that the non-linear operation of a power inductor in a SMPS can induce instability of the control system leading to overheating of the inductor beyond its allowable temperature and to an excessive peak of the maximum current. The case study is performed by a commercial ferrite inductor employed in a synchronous boost converter encompassing a control system to adjust the duty cycle, assuring a constant output voltage. The thermal transient is described by the time domain waveforms and thermal images.

Fuzzy cooperative control of automated ground passenger vehicles

2007

In this paper a fuzzy motion control for cooperative passenger automated vehicles where there are not collisions between the closest ones is proposed. Based on the position of the target and on the initial position of each cooperative vehicle, a supervisory plans nonholonomic circular trajectories which are without intersections, while a fuzzy control strategy assures the asymptotical stability of the motion errors and the reaching of the target with low acceleration values along the planned trajectories. Based on the ISO 2631-1 standard, the saturation properties of the fuzzy maps guarantees low values of the longitudinal and lateral accelerations to assure the comfort of the passengers. T…

Attracteurs de Lorenz de variété instable de dimension arbitraire

1997

Abstract We construct the first examples of flows with robust multidimensional Lorenz-like attractors: the singularity contained in the attractor may have any number of expanding eigenvalues, and the attractor remains transitive in a whole neighbourhood of the initial flow. These attractors support a Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen SRB-measure and, contrary to the usual (low-dimensional) Lorenz models, they have infinite modulus of structural stability.

Hidden attractors and multistability in a modified Chua’s circuit

2021

The first hidden chaotic attractor was discovered in a dimensionless piecewise-linear Chua’s system with a special Chua’s diode. But designing such physical Chua’s circuit is a challenging task due to the distinct slopes of Chua’s diode. In this paper, a modified Chua’s circuit is implemented using a 5-segment piecewise-linear Chua’s diode. In particular, the coexisting phenomena of hidden attractors and three point attractors are noticed in the entire period-doubling bifurcation route. Attraction basins of different coexisting attractors are explored. It is demonstrated that the hidden attractors have very small basins of attraction not being connected with any fixed point. The PSIM circui…
