Specific and global regulation of mRNA stability during osmotic stress in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

2009

Hyperosmotic stress yields reprogramming of gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Most of this response is orchestrated by Hog1, a stress-activated, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) homologous to human p38. We investigated, on a genomic scale, the contribution of changes in transcription rates and mRNA stabilities to the modulation of mRNA amounts during the response to osmotic stress in wild-type and hog1 mutant cells. Mild osmotic shock induces a broad mRNA destabilization; however, osmo-mRNAs are up-regulated by increasing both transcription rates and mRNA half-lives. In contrast, mild or severe osmotic stress in hog1 mutants, or severe osmotic stress in wild-type cel…

Synthesis of Hydroquinoid C- and O-Biphenyl Disaccharides by Chromium-Templated Benzannulation Reactions

2003

Organometallic monosaccharides 6−10 containing a chromium styrylcarbene skeleton have been synthesized in quantitative yield from O-glycoside methylcarbene complexes 1−5 bearing diisopropylidene-protected glucose, mannose, galactose, or fructose in a trans-selective aldol condensation with benzaldehyde. These compounds undergo a chromium-templated benzannulation upon reaction with ethynyl glucoside to give diastereoisomeric mixtures of Cr(CO)3 complexes. The differences in their thermodynamic stability was exploited in a diastereoselective synthesis of hydroquinoid biphenyl disaccharides 12−16 in 67−88% yields. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Forecast Output Coincidence and Biproportion: Two Criteria to Determine the Orientation of an Economy. Comparison for France (1980-1997)

2002

International audience; The method of forecast output coincidence used to determine if sectors are demand-sided or supply-sided in an input-output framework mixes two effects, the structural effect (choosing between demand and supply side models) and the effect of an exogenous factor (final demand or added-value). The note recalls that another method is possible, the comparison of the stability of technical and allocation coefficients, generalized by the biproportional filter: if for a sector, after biproportional filtering, column coefficients are more stable than row coefficients, then this sector is declared as not supply-sided (but one cannot decide that it is demand-sided anyway), and …

A biproportional filter to compare technical and allocation coefficient variations

1997

International audience; In input-output analysis there are two alternate possibilities between Leontief's mechanism (fixed technical coefficients) and Ghosh's mechanism (fixed allocation coefficients). Testing the long term consistency of these mechanisms entails comparing input-output matrices over time. This paper challenges the value of proportional filters (separate comparison of column and row coefficients) and introduces the biproportional filter which allows simultaneous comparison of column and rows. An application is proposed using French input-output tables for 1980 and 1993. The stability of column coefficients cannot be taken for granted and generally, for any sector, both rows …

Guided Optical Waves in a Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Layer: A Birefringence Analysis of Molecular Orientation on the Switching Process

1995

Abstract Guided optical waves are very sensitive to the alteration of optical properties of dielectric media. In this report, we demonstrate the use of guided waves for studying dynamic behavior of ferroelectric liquid crystals. Propagating light in the anisotropic medium suffers a birefringent effect, which causes coupling of p- and s-polarized light. Theoretical calculations, based on the Maxwell equations, successfully describe this phenomena, using a dielectric tensor diagonal in molecular coordinates, which is transformed to the laboratory coordinate system by three Euler angles. The waveguide measurements are able to probe the molecular orientation and movement of the liquid crystal m…

Nonlinear mode coupling in a birefringent microstructured fiber tuned by externally applied hydrostatic pressure

2015

We studied the effect of power coupling between two linearly polarized modes, which occurs during nonlinear propagation in an externally tuned birefringent microstructured fiber. We investigated both experimentally and numerically the possibility of measuring hydrostatic pressure by tracking the nonlinear power coupling between the fiber polarization modes. We analyzed the impact of the fiber length exposed to pressure and the input polarization state on the coupling efficiency. We also revealed that the observation of nonlinear power coupling between the polarization modes is limited by linear coupling occurring in the leadthroughs to the pressure chamber. Moreover, we demonstrated that th…

2010

Within the quick nano-fabrication techniques evolution and the increasing needs in low space and energy opto-electronic functions on-chip integration, studies and control of electromagnetic resonances of sub-micrometric objects are crucial issues. One aim of this work was then to improve our knowledge of the light-matter interaction. To this end, optical near-field experiments and complementary numerical development of models have been performed to study electromagnetic resonances due to light-matter interaction in sub-micrometric resonators. As an introduction, the first part of the manuscript presents the main phenomena involved in near-field optical microscopy and the used SNOM operation…

Experimental demonstration of phase bistability in a broad-area optical oscillator with injected signal

2015

We demonstrate experimentally that a broad-area laserlike optical oscillator (a nondegenerate photorefractive oscillator) with structured injected signal displays two-phase patterns. The technique [de Valc\'arcel and Staliunas, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 054101 (2010)] consists in spatially modulating the injection, so that its phase alternates periodically between two opposite values, i.e., differing by $\ensuremath{\pi}$.

Cutoff solitons and bistability of the discrete inductance-capacitance electrical line: Theory and experiments

2007

A discrete nonlinear system driven at one end by a periodic excitation of frequency above the upper band edge (the discreteness induced cutoff) is shown to be a means to (1) generate propagating breather excitations in a long chain and (2) reveal the bistable property of a short chain. After detailed numerical verifications, the bistability prediction is demonstrated experimentally on an electrical transmission line made of 18 inductance-capacitance $(LC)$ cells. The numerical simulations of the $LC$-line model allow us also to verify the breather generation prediction with a striking accuracy.

Experimental study of electrical FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with modified excitability

2006

International audience; We present an electronical circuit modelling a FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron with a modified excitability. To characterize this basic cell, the bifurcation curves between stability with excitation threshold, bistability and oscillations are investigated. An electrical circuit is then proposed to realize a unidirectional coupling between two cells, mimicking an inter-neuron synaptic coupling. In such a master-slave configuration, we show experimentally how the coupling strength controls the dynamics of the slave neuron, leading to frequency locking, chaotic behavior and synchronization. These phenomena are then studied by phase map analysis. The architecture of a possible ne…
