Paediatric oral formulations: comparison of two extemporaneously compounded suspensions from tacrolimus capsules

2011

Study objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the stability of tacrolimus in extemporaneously compounded liquid formulations. Methods: Two sets of liquid formulations were prepared using two different vehicles: one set in sterile water and in simple syrup (1:1) and one set using equal volumes of commercially available suspending agent (Ora-Plus) and simple syrup. The concentration of tacrolimus in each formulation was 0.5 mg/mL. The preparations containing Ora-Plus were stored at 25°C, the formulations that were prepared with sterile water and simple syrup were stored under refrigeration at 4°C. Results: Samples were collected at regular time intervals over a period of 56 d…

Climatology of the stability and humidity terms in the Haines Index to improve the estimate of forest fire risk in the Western Mediterranean Basin (V…

2014

The stability and moisture content of the different atmospheric levels are commonly used to assess the risk index in the propagation and evolution of a hypothetical forest fire. The Haines Index (HI) combines these terms to determine the environmental potential for wildfire growth. In this paper the environmental stability and humidity associated with the lower atmospheric layers in the Western Mediterranean Basin are investigated by analysing HI calculations over a 29-year period. The HI climatology can be applied to the study of plume-dominated forest fires. These fires tend to present very erratic propagation behaviour and create highly dangerous situations for fire brigades. Thus the kn…

Probing a Polar Cluster in the Retinal Binding Pocket of Bacteriorhodopsin by a Chemical Design Approach

2012

Bacteriorhodopsin has a polar cluster of amino acids surrounding the retinal molecule, which is responsible for light harvesting to fuel proton pumping. From our previous studies, we have shown that threonine 90 is the pivotal amino acid in this polar cluster, both functionally and structurally. In an attempt to perform a phenotype rescue, we have chemically designed a retinal analogue molecule to compensate the drastic effects of the T90A mutation in bacteriorhodopsin. This analogue substitutes the methyl group at position C(13) of the retinal hydrocarbon chain by and ethyl group (20-methyl retinal). We have analyzed the effect of reconstituting the wild-type and the T90A mutant apoprotein…

Equilibrium studies in natural waters: Speciation of phenolic compounds in synthetic seawater at different salinities

1995

Interactions between some phenolic compounds and macro-constituents of synthetic seawater (Na{sup +}, K{sup +}, Ca{sup 2+}, Mg{sup 2+}, Cl{sup {minus}}, and SO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}}), at 20, 35, and 45 {per_thousand} salinity, have been investigated potentiometrically by using the [H]-glass electrode. The formation constants of phenol, o- and p-cresol, o-a dn p-nitrophenol complexes with sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium ions have been determined in the ionic strength range 0 {le} I {le} 1 mol/L. A comparison between the apparent protonation constants of phenols determined in synthetic seawater, and those simulated by a suitable complex formation model, is discussed. The possibility …

Bone implant sockets made using three different procedures: a stability study in dogs

2012

Objective: This study compared the effects of three different methods of preparing bone implant sockets (drilling, osteotomes, and piezoelectric device) on osseointegration using resonance frequency analysis (RFA). Study Design: An experimental prospective study was designed. Material and Methods: Ten adult beagle dogs were studied. After 5 weeks, 23 out of 28 initially placed implants in the iliac crest were evaluated, comparing these three different procedures of bone implant socket. Student’s t-test (paired, two-tailed) was used to reveal differences among the three groups at each time point (SPSS 16.0, IL, USA). Results: After a 5-week healing period, the implants placed in sockets that…

Hot cracking in Al–Mg–Si alloy laser welding – operating parameters and their effects

2005

Abstract Hot cracking is a phenomenon that frequently occurs in the laser welding of some “special” alloys, such as the aluminium–magnesium–silicon type. Each occurrence of this phenomenon needs to be studied in itself, taking into account not only the individual, but also the interactive, influences of the various parameters. The advantage of using laser beams in welding processes lies in the speeds that can be reached. The disadvantage, however, is that, owing to the high cooling rates characteristic of the interaction between the laser beam and the material, the welding speed itself becomes a cause of hot cracking. The aim of this paper is to see how this disadvantage may be eliminated. …

Interest, Voluntary Associations and the Stability of the Political System

1985

In this article the adequacy of the sociological paradigm in voluntary associ ations' research is investigated by comparing it with its nval, the incor poration or system integration paradigm (types 1 and 2) and with two approaches that are their combinations: multi-dimensional theones of disper sion and cross-cutting of interests (type 3) and multi-dimensional theories of incorporation and system integration of interests (type 4). I express the view that by themselves both pluralism and incorporation paradigms are , unable to depict the complex system of political stability. An adequate theory must contain elements of two dimensions of maintaining stability: firstly, the idea of dispersion…

5-methylcytosine modification of an Epstein–Barr virus noncoding RNA decreases its stability

2020

Many cellular noncoding RNAs contain chemically modified nucleotides that are essential for their function. The Epstein–Barr virus expresses two highly abundant noncoding RNAs called EBV-encoded RNA 1 (EBER1) and EBER2. To examine whether these viral RNAs contain modified nucleotides, we purified native EBERs from EBV-infected cells and performed mass spectrometry analysis. While EBER2 contains no modified nucleotides at stoichiometric amounts, EBER1 was found to carry 5-methylcytosine (m5C) modification. Bisulfite sequencing indicated that a single cytosine of EBER1 is methylated in ∼95% of molecules, and the RNA methyltransferase NSUN2 was identified as the EBER1-specific writer. Intrigui…

Stability of radial symmetry for a Monge-Ampère overdetermined problem

2008

Recently the symmetry of solutions to overdetermined problems has been established for the class of Hessian operators, including the Monge-Ampère operator. In this paper we prove that the radial symmetry of the domain and of the solution to an overdetermined Dirichlet problem for the Monge-Ampère equation is stable under suitable perturbations of the data. © 2008 Fondazione Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata and Springer-Verlag.
