Limits to CO2-Neutrality of Burning Wood. (Review)

2016

Abstract Consumption of wood as a source of energy is discussed with respect to efficiency and restraints to ensure sustainability of the environment on the grounds of a simple analytical model describing dynamics of biomass accumulation in forest stands – a particular case of the well-known empirical Richards’ equation. Amounts of wood harvested under conditions of maximum productivity of forest land are presented in units normalised with respect to the maximum of the mean annual increment and used to determine the limits of CO2-neutrality. The ecological “footprint” defined by the area of growing stands necessary to absorb the excess amount of CO2 annually released from burning biomass is…

Territorial Intelligence and Governance.

2007

International audience; As with European experiments, in various regions in France, territorial intelligence projects have been initiated since 2003. (see the regions of Lower Normandy, Lorraine, Réunion Island, the Aquitaine region, etc.).The objective of these is to gather and exploit information which is not confined to particular sectors and the collective processing of which can contribute to durable development. Apart from institutions, civil society and the inhabitants of the territory, it is observed that companies and in particular small and medium sized enterprises are natural partners who show interest in such initiatives. Both the different economic chains and the participating …

Measuring Socio-Economic Welfare and Sustainable Transport – Selected Dilemmas

2017

The aim of this paper is to present and elaborate relations between the understanding and main indicators of socio-economic welfare, including indicators of sustainable development, and the measurement methods of sustainable transport. The focus is on the role that transport basically plays for nearly all dimensions of living conditions and the quality of life. First, the defi nition of socio-economic welfare and different views on measuring welfare are presented. Then, the meaning of transport for improving socio-economic aspects of life, as well as the need for sustainable transport are underlined. In the last part of the article developed indicators of sustainable transport are discussed…

MUV: A Game to Encourage Sustainable Mobility Habits

2019

This working paper investigates the question of changing people mobility towards more sustainable habits involving them in an engaging gameplay. The work is performed within MUV H2020 research and innovation action. The game design, definition and features have been co-created through the involvement of different citizens and stakeholders in six European neighbourhoods. The paper discusses the game design as resulting from co-creation and co-design experiences with each neighbourhood communities involved in initial phases. The paper argues that the local co-design activities have influenced the game definition, together with the community engagement approach. The MUV gameplay approach resul…

The role of water in sustainable architecture

2011

Today’s propulsive push towards the 3th millennium, driven forward by technological innovation, needs to grapple with an economic and environmental global crisis. Generally speaking water is synonymous with life; in bio-climatic architecture it is synonymous with thermal comfort, since water is able to regulate the micro-climate of various interiors, help solar radiation and brighten up internal spaces. There is more, however. In certain cases, water becomes an actual building element: thanks to the considerable power of its thermal mass, it can be used in passive solar systems (with the “drum wall” in place of stone, brick or concrete walls), through the employment of the “trombe” wall, or…

Solving Conflicts among Conservation, Economic, and Social Objectives in Boreal Production Forest Landscapes: Fennoscandian Perspectives

2018

This chapter discusses challenges and possibilities involved in preserving biological diversity and the diversity of ecosystem services in the boreal zone and yet at the same time maintaining intensive timber extraction in boreal forests. Our focus is on Fennoscandian forests at the landscapes level, and we consider economic, social and ecological in the sustainability of forest management. We provide an outlook to boreal forest ecosystems and their history, and an overview of the forestry practices and policies that aim to ensure multi-functionality of Fennoscandian forests, i.e. diversity of efforts on sustaining biodiversity, timber production and other ecosystem services from forest lan…

T9+HUD: Physical Keypad and HUD can Improve Driving Performance while Typing and Driving

2016

We introduce T9+HUD, a text entry method designed to decrease visual distraction while driving and typing. T9+HUD combines a physical 3x4 keypad on the steering wheel with a head-up-display (HUD) for projecting output on the windshield. Previous work suggests this may be a visually less demanding way to type while driving than the popular case which requires shifts of visual attention away from the road. We present a prototype design and report first results from a controlled evaluation in a driving simulator. While driving, the T9+HUD text entry rate was equal compared to a dashboard-mounted touchscreen device, but it reduced lane deviations by 70%. Furthermore, there was no significant di…

Biomass estimator for NIR image with a few additional spectral band images taken from light UAS

2012

A novel way to produce biomass estimation will offer possibilities for precision farming. Fertilizer prediction maps can be made based on accurate biomass estimation generated by a novel biomass estimator. By using this knowledge, a variable rate amount of fertilizers can be applied during the growing season. The innovation consists of light UAS, a high spatial resolution camera, and VTT's novel spectral camera. A few properly selected spectral wavelengths with NIR images and point clouds extracted by automatic image matching have been used in the estimation. The spectral wavelengths were chosen from green, red, and NIR channels.

Using VIS/NIR and IR spectral cameras for detecting and separating crime scene details

2012

Detecting invisible details and separating mixed evidence is critical for forensic inspection. If this can be done reliably and fast at the crime scene, irrelevant objects do not require further examination at the laboratory. This will speed up the inspection process and release resources for other critical tasks. This article reports on tests which have been carried out at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland together with the Central Finland Police Department and the National Bureau of Investigation for detecting and separating forensic details with hyperspectral technology. In the tests evidence was sought after at an assumed violent burglary scene with the use of VTT's 500-900 nm wave…
