ATLAS results and prospects with focus on beyond the Standard Model

2018

Abstract A summary of results relevant for searches of phenomena beyond the Standard Model (SM) obtained by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. While all SM measurements can be considered as indirect searches, the focus will be set on direct searches and measurements interpreted as limits on phenomena beyond the SM. Prospects towards Run 3 and High Luminosity LHC are reported where available. Most results are based on an integrated luminosity of 36 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

2003

Abstract The experiments at the Large Hadron Collider LHC have a large discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model and in the investigation of the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking. The large event rates provided by the high luminosity LHC machine will, however, also allow to perform precision measurements of important Standard Model parameters. Both the discovery potential for new physics and the measurements of Standard Model parameters are summarized in the present paper.

Search for $\gamma\gamma$ decays of a Higgs boson produced in association with a fermion pair in $e^+ e^-$ collisions at LEP

2000

A serach for gamma gamma decays of Higgs boson is performed in the data sample collected at LEP with the ALEPH detector between 1991 and 1999. This corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 672 pb-1 centre-of-mass energies ranging from 88 to 202 GeV. The search is based on topologies arising from a Higgs boson produced in association with a fermion pair via the Higgs-strahlung process e+e- -> Hffbar, with ffbar = nunubar, e+e-, mu+mu-, tau+tau- or qqbar... Search for a light Higgs boson decaying to two gluons orss¯in the radiative decays ofΥ(1S)

2013

We search for the decay Υ(1S)→γA^0, A^0→gg or ss , where A^0 is the pseudoscalar light Higgs boson predicted by the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. We use a sample of (17.6±0.3)×10^6 Υ(1S) mesons produced in the BABAR experiment via e^+e^-→Υ(2S)→π^+π^-Υ(1S). We see no significant signal and set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the product branching fraction B(Υ(1S)→γA^0)·B(A^0→gg or ss) ranging from 10^(-6) to 10^(-2) for A^0 masses in the range 0.5–9.0  GeV/c^2.

Limits on the decay-rate difference of neutralBmesons and onCP,T, andCPTviolation inB0B0oscillations

2004

Using events in which one of two neutral-B mesons from the decay of an {Upsilon}(4S) resonance is fully reconstructed, we set limits on the difference between the decay rates of the two neutral-B mass eigenstates and on CP, T, and CPT violation in B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} mixing. The reconstructed decays, comprising both CP and flavor eigenstates, are obtained from 88 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We determine six independent parameters governing oscillations ({Delta}m, {Delta}{Lambda}/{Lambda}), CPT and CP violation (Re z, Im z), and CP and T violation (Im {lambda}{sub CP}, |q/p|), where {la…

Search forCPViolation in the DecaysD0→K−K+andD0→π−π+

2008

We report a search for CP violation in the decay modes D±→KS0K±, Ds±→KS0K±, and Ds±→KS0π± using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469  fb-1 collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- storage rings. The decay rate CP asymmetries, ACP, are determined to be (+0.13±0.36(stat)±0.25(syst))%, (-0.05±0.23(stat)±0.24(syst))%, and (+0.6±2.0(stat)±0.3(syst))%, respectively. These measurements are consistent with zero, and also with the Standard Model prediction [(-0.332±0.006)% for the D±→KS0K± and Ds±→KS0K± modes, and (+0.332±0.006)% for the Ds±→KS0π± mode]. They are the most precise determinations to date.

Measurement of the directCP-violating parameterACPin the decayD+→K−π+π+

2014

We measure the direct CP-violating parameter A_CP for the decay of the charged charm meson, D+ -> K-pi+pi+ (and charge conjugate), using the full 10.4 fb-1 sample of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We extract the raw reconstructed charge asymmetry by fitting the invariant mass distributions for the sum and difference of charge-specific samples. This quantity is then corrected for detector-related asymmetries using data-driven methods and for possible physics asymmetries (from B -> D processes) using input from Monte Carlo simulation. We measure A_CP = [-0.16 +- 0.15 (stat.) +- 0.09 (syst.)]%, which is consistent with zer…

Search for Higgs boson production in oppositely charged dilepton and missing energy final states in9.7  fb−1ofpp¯collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2013

We present a search for Higgs boson in final states with two oppositely charged leptons and large missing transverse energy as expected in H -> WW -> lvlv decays. The events are selected from the full Run II data sample of 9.7 fb-1 of ppbar collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt s = 1.96 TeV. To validate our search methodology, we measure the non-resonant W W production cross section and find sigma_WW = 11.6 +/- 0.7 pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. In the Higgs boson search, no significant excess above the background expectation is observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson production cross section a…

Measurement of triple gauge WWγ couplings at LEP2 using photonic events

1998

A study of events with photons and missing energy has been performed with the data sample obtained with the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 184 GeV,corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of about 80 pb**-1.The measured distributions are in agreement with Standard Model predictions, leading to constraints on W W gamma gauge coupling parameters Delta(kappa_gamma) and lambda_gamma. The results from the fit to the cross sectionsand to the energy and angular distributions of the photons are: Delta(kappa_gamma) = 0.05 +1.15/-1.10 (stat) +/- 0.25 (syst) lambda_gamma = 0.05 +1.55/-1.45 (stat) +/- 0.30 (syst) A study of events with photons and missing energy has been pe…

Single- and multi-photon production in e+e− collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV

1998

The production of final states involving one or more energetic photons from e(+)e(-) collisions is studied in a sample of 58.5 pb(-1) of data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV by the ALEPH detector at LEP. The e(+)e(-) --> v (v) over bar gamma(gamma) and e(+)e(-) --> gamma gamma(gamma) cross sections are measured. The data are in good agreement with predictions based on the Standard Model and are used to set upper limits on the cross sections for anomalous photon production in the context of two supersymmetric models and for various extensions to QED. In particular, in the context of a super-light gravitino model a cross section upper limit of 0.38 pb is placed on the process e…
