Statistical analysis of life history calendar data

2016

The life history calendar is a data-collection tool for obtaining reliable retrospective data about life events. To illustrate the analysis of such data, we compare the model-based probabilistic event history analysis and the model-free data mining method, sequence analysis. In event history analysis, we estimate instead of transition hazards the cumulative prediction probabilities of life events in the entire trajectory. In sequence analysis, we compare several dissimilarity metrics and contrast data-driven and user-defined substitution costs. As an example, we study young adults' transition to adulthood as a sequence of events in three life domains. The events define the multistate event…

State Space-Vector Model of Linear Induction Motors including End-Effects and Iron Losses Part I: Theoretical Analysis

2020

This is the first part of the article, divided into two parts, dealing with the definition of a space-vector dynamic model of the linear induction motor (LIM) taking into consideration both the dynamic end-effects and the iron losses and its offline identification. This first part specifically treats the theoretical formulation of this model, which has been expressed in a state form, so to be, in perspective, suitably adopted for developing novel nonlinear control techniques, nonlinear observers as well as electrical losses minimization techniques. Besides the formulation of the dynamic model in space-vector state form, a steady-state analysis is proposed, highlighting the combined effects …

Emotional user experience: Traits, events, and states☆

2015

Emotional experience has become an important topic in human-technology interaction research and design. Nevertheless, such research and design often lacks a proper explanatory basis and methodologically robust operationalisation. In this article, a conceptualisation of emotional user experience is formulated based on the appraisal theory of emotion, where the goal congruence of the interaction events and the task-independent individual traits are thought to underlie the user's emotional response. A laboratory study with N=50 participants conducting ordinary computer tasks is reported. The results suggest that subjective emotional experience depends on a number of factors relating to individ…

Input-Output Feedback Linearization Control of a Linear Induction Motor Taking Into Consideration Its Dynamic End-Effects and Iron Losses

2020

This article proposes a new input-output feedback linearization control (FLC) technique of linear induction motors (LIMs), taking into consideration both the dynamic end-effects and the iron losses. Starting from a previously conceived dynamic model, including the dynamic end-effects and the iron losses, all the theoretical framework of the FLC has been developed. The proposed FLC improves a previous version of FLC in accounting also the iron losses, which in LIMs with fixed-secondary sheet play a pivotal role more than in rotating induction motors (RIMs). The proposed FLC has been experimentally tested on a suitably developed test setup, and experimental comparisons between the proposed FL…

Neural Sensorless Control of Linear Induction Motors by a Full-Order Luenberger Observer Considering the End Effects

2012

This paper proposes a neural based full-order Luenberger adaptive speed observer for sensorless linear induction motor (LIM) drives, where the linear speed is estimated with the total least squares (TLS) EXIN neuron. A novel state space-vector representation of the LIM has been deduced, taking into consideration its dynamic end effects. The state equations of the LIM have been rearranged into a matrix form to be solved, in terms of the LIM linear speed, by any least squares technique. The TLS EXIN neuron has been used to compute online, in recursive form, the machine linear speed. A new gain matrix choice of the Luenberger observer, specifically taking into consideration the LIM dynamic end…

Aspects concerning the manifestation of the students’ emotional intelligence

2010

Abstract In this study, we were proposed to investigate aspects concerning the manifestation of the students’ emotional intelligence, namely the extent to which the adolescents possess a series of capacities proper to emotional intelligence. Wayne Leon Payne defines emotional intelligence as being the ability which implies a creative relation with states of anxiety, pain and desire. Emotion depends on the way a person analyzes and evaluates a certain situation. In order to determine the emotional intelligence quotient, it was used the Emotional Intelligence Test for adults, in the version adapted by M. Rocco from R. Bar-On and D. Goleman. The personality dimensions were determined using the…

Clinical states of cirrhosis and competing risks.

2018

The clinical course of cirrhosis is mostly determined by the progressive increase of portal hypertension, hyperdynamic circulation, bacterial translocation and activation of systemic inflammation. Different disease states, encompassing compensated and decompensated cirrhosis and a late decompensated state, are related to the progression of these mechanisms and may be recognised by haemodynamic or clinical characteristics. While these disease states do not follow a predictable sequence, they correspond to varying mortality risk. Acute-on-chronic liver failure may occur either in decompensated or in compensated cirrhosis and is always associated with a high short-term mortality. The increasin…

Asymmetric synthesis of chloroisothreonine derivatives via syn-stereoselective Mannich-type additions across N-sulfinyl-α- chloroimines

2014

Mannich-type reactions of O-Boc glycolic esters across chiral N-sulfinyl-α-chloroaldimines resulted in the efficient and syn-stereoselective synthesis of new γ-chloro-α-hydroxy-β-amino esters (dr > 99:1). The α-coordinating ability of the chlorine atom was of great importance for the diastereoselectivity of the Mannich-type reaction and overruled the chelation of the sulfinyl oxygen with the lithium ion of the incoming E-enolate in the transition state model. These novel chloroisothreonine derivatives proved to be excellent building blocks in asymmetric synthesis of novel syn-β,γ-aziridino-α-hydroxy esters and biologically relevant trans-oxazolidinone carboxylic esters.
