Emission Measure Distribution in Loops Impulsively Heated at the Footpoints

2004

This work is prompted by the evidence of sharply peaked emission measure distributions in active stars, and by the claims of isothermal loops in solar coronal observations, at variance with the predictions of hydrostatic loop models with constant cross-section and uniform heating. We address the problem with loops heated at the foot-points. Since steady heating does not allow static loop models solutions, we explore whether pulse-heated loops can exist and appear as steady loops, on a time average. We simulate pulse-heated loops, using the Palermo-Harvard 1-D hydrodynamic code, for different initial conditions corresponding to typical coronal temperatures of stars ranging from intermediate …

Order in the chaos? The strange case of accreting millisecond pulsars

2007

We review recent results from the X-ray timing of accreting millisecond pulsars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries. This is the first time a timing analysis is performed on accreting millisecond pulsars, and for the first time we can obtain information on the behavior of a very fast pulsar subject to accretion torques. We find both spin-up and spin-down behaviors, from which, using available models for the accretion torques, we derive information on the mass accretion rate and magnetic field of the neutron star in these systems. We also find that the phase delays behavior as a function of time in these sources is sometimes quite complex and difficult to interpret, since phase shifts, most probably …

The Static Stability of the Tropopause Region in Adiabatic Baroclinic Life Cycle Experiments

2011

Abstract The tropopause inversion layer (TIL) is a region of enhanced static stability just above the WMO-defined thermal tropopause. It is a ubiquitous feature in midlatitudes and is well characterized by observations. However, it is still lacking a satisfactory theoretical explanation. This study utilizes adiabatic baroclinic life cycle experiments to investigate dynamical mechanisms that lead to TIL formation. As the baroclinic wave grows, a strong TIL forms above anticyclonic anomalies, while no TIL is found above cyclonic anomalies; this is consistent with previous results. However, during the early growth phase there is no TIL in the global or zonal average: positive and negative anom…

More on the determination of the coronal heating function from Yohkoh data

2002

Two recent works have analyzed a solar large and steady coronal loop observed with Yohkoh/SXT in two filter passbands to infer the distribution of the heating along it. Priest et al. (2000) modelled the distribution of the temperature obtained from filter ratio method with an analytical approach, and concluded that the heating was uniform along the loop. Aschwanden (2001) found that a uniform heating led to an unreasonably large plasma column depth along the line of sight, and, using a two component loop model, that a footpoint-heated model loop (with a minor cool component) yields more acceptable physical solutions. We revisit the analysis of the same loop system, considering conventional …

Restoring of A balance by electric pulses

2004

Restoring of the balance beam to its initial situation after a change of load can be effected by combination of forces of different kind. In former papers we discussed the possibility using the equation of motion of the balance to determine the mass to be measured. After the measurement the balance was restored by means of current pulses into the electromagnetic measuring system. In the present paper we discuss the application of electric pulses into an additional electrostatic system.

Switching the Magnetic Vortex Core in a Single Nanoparticle.

2016

Imaging and manipulating the spin structure of nano- and mesoscale magnetic systems is a challenging topic in magnetism, yielding a wide range of spin phenomena such as skyrmions, hedgehog-like spin structures, or vortices. A key example has been provided by the vortex spin texture, which can be addressed in four independent states of magnetization, enabling the development of multibit magnetic storage media. Most of the works devoted to the study of the magnetization reversal mechanisms of the magnetic vortices have been focused on micrometer-size magnetic platelets. Here we report the experimental observation of the vortex state formation and annihilation in individual 25 nm molecular-bas…

Measuring charge based quantum bits by a superconducting single-electron transistor

2002

Single-electron transistors have been proposed to be used as a read-out device for Cooper pair charge qubits. Here we show that a coupled superconducting transistor at a threshold voltage is much more effective in measuring the state of a qubit than a normal-metal transistor at the same voltage range. The effect of the superconducting gap is to completely block the current through the transistor when the qubit is in the logical state 1, compared to the mere diminishment of the current in the normal-metal case. The time evolution of the system is solved when the measuring device is driven out of equilibrium and the setting is analysed numerically for parameters accessible by lithographic alu…

Manipulating antiferromagnets with magnetic fields: Ratchet motion of multiple domain walls induced by asymmetric field pulses

2016

Future applications of antiferromagnets (AFs) in many spintronics devices rely on the precise manipulation of domain walls. The conventional approach using static magnetic fields is inefficient due to the low susceptibility of AFs. Recently proposed electrical manipulation with spin-orbit torques is restricted to metals with a specific crystal structure. Here we propose an alternative, broadly applicable approach: using asymmetric magnetic field pulses to induce controlled ratchet motion of AF domain walls. The efficiency of this approach is based on three peculiarities of AF dynamics. First, a time-dependent magnetic field couples with an AF order parameter stronger than a static magnetic …

Self-similarity and scaling of thermal shock fractures

2013

The problem of crack pattern formation due to thermal shock loading at the surface of half-space is solved numerically using two-dimensional boundary element method. The results of numerical simulations with 100-200 random simultaneously growing and interacting cracks are used to obtain scaling relations for crack length and spacing. The numerical results predict that such process of pattern formation with quasi-static crack growth is not stable and at some point the excess energy leads to unstable propagation of one of the longest crack. The onset of instability has also been determined from numerical results.

Revised periodic boundary conditions: Fundamentals, electrostatics, and the tight-binding approximation

2011

Many nanostructures today are low-dimensional and flimsy, and therefore get easily distorted. Distortion-induced symmetry-breaking makes conventional, translation-periodic simulations invalid, which has triggered developments for new methods. Revised periodic boundary conditions (RPBC) is a simple method that enables simulations of complex material distortions, either classically or quantum-mechanically. The mathematical details of this easy-to-implement approach, however, have not been discussed before. Therefore, in this paper we summarize the underlying theory, present the practical details of RPBC, especially related to a non-orthogonal tight-binding formulation, discuss selected featur…
