Ionic transport characteristics of negatively and positively charged conical nanopores in 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 2:2, 1:2, and 1:3 electrolytes

We study experimentally the current (I)-voltage (V) curves of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 2:2, 1:2, and 1:3 electrolytes in positively and negatively charged conically-shaped pores of nanoscale dimensions. The positive charges are poly(allylamine hydrochloride) chains functionalized on the pore surface by electrostatic interactions while the negative charges are carboxylic acid groups. Under physiological conditions, these fixed-charge groups are ionized and strongly interact with the different monovalent, divalent, and trivalent ions in the pore solution. A recently designed enzyme, HG3.17, obtained by directed evolution, has shown a catalytic activity close to natural enzymes. Hybrid QM/MM molecular dynamics simulations for the Kemp elimination in this new enzyme have provided a deep insight into the origin of its catalytic efficiency. In this case, we have first demonstrated the presence of different conformations with significantly different reactivity. The larger reactivity is related with a better electrostatic preorganization of the environment that creates a more favorable electrostatic potential for the reaction to proceed. Morphological transformations in a dually thermoresponsive coil-rod-coil bioconjugate.

We report the conformational and assembly behavior of a thermoresponsive triblock biohybrid conjugate under aqueous conditions. The triblock comprises of poly(diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (PDEGMEMA) conjugated to the ends of a triple-helix forming collagen-like peptide. The circular dichroism (CD) experiment confirms the ability of the collagen-like peptide middle block to assemble as a triple helix in the hybrid conjugate. Above the LCST (∼35 °C), the collapse of the thermoresponsive PDEGMEMA polymer at the ends of the peptide domain resulted in a concomitant increase in the conformational stability of the peptide domain towards thermal denaturation. Abstract A series of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers were synthesized by reaction between poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polyglycidol-b-poly(ethylene oxide) precursor copolymer and four n-alkyl isocyanates: ethyl, propyl, butyl and pentyl. After dissolution in water at room temperature the copolymers spontaneously form micelles. The critical micellization concentrations were determined by UV–VIS spectroscopy. Abstract Specific properties (ion-exchange capacity, water content, pore volume fraction) and transport properties (counterion transport number and electrical conductivity) have been measured in four commercial cation-exchange membranes loaded with a variety of cations of different nature and charge. Not surprisingly, equivalent conductances are lower than in free solution and transport numbers decrease with valency of the counterion. Monodisperse high molar mass elastin-like polypeptide macromonomers comprising 20 pentasequences (M = 8332 g/mol) were radically polymerized to high degrees of polymerization Pw = 590. Polymerization was conducted in water well above the lower phase transition temperature, i.e., in the phase separated regime. The resulting polymers adopt a cylindrical shape as demonstrated by AFM pictures of solutions spin-cast on mica. The directional persistence of the cylindrical brushes was determined by static light scattering to Kuhn statistical segments lengths lk = 120 nm at 5 mM aqueous NaCl solution which decreased to lk = 54 nm at 0.65 M NaCl. Effects of pressure and of thermal history on the structural phase transition of KCN

The cubic-noncubic structural phase transition of a KCN single crystal is studied as a function of thermal history and of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar. The standard sequence of phases is cubic-monoclinic-orthorhombic on cooling and orthorhombic-cubic on heating. The monoclinic phase is also absent in first cooling runs at low pressures (p≦250 bar). The width of the monoclinic field inp, T phase diagram is increased in second cooling runs. The effects are discussed in terms of a martensitic transformation behavior and random strain fields.
Polymer induced changes of the crystallization scenario in suspensions of hard sphere like microgel particles

We investigated the crystallization scenario of highly cross linked polystyrene particles dispersed in the good solvent 2-ethylnaphtalene and their mixtures with non-adsorbing low molecular weight polysterene polymer using time resolved static light scattering. The samples were prepared slightly below the melting volume fraction of the polymer free system. For the polymer free samples, we obtained polycrystalline solids via crystallization scenario known from hard sphere suspensions with little competition of wall crystal formation. Dynamics of phase separation and critical phenomena in polymer mixtures

The phenomenological mean-field theory for statics and dynamics of polymer mixtures is described, generalizing the approaches of Flory-Huggins, Cahn-Hilliard and de Gennes. Predictions are made for critical behavior, spinodal decomposition and homogeneous nucleation. The validity of the mean-field approximations is discussed with Ginzburg criteria. The results of the theory are compared to computer simulations and recent experiments.
