Hemostatic agents used in apical surgery: a review

2011

Objective: A review was made of the current literature on hemostatic agents used in apical surgery in order to determine their effectiveness and adverse effects. Material and methods: The main search terms used were: endodontic surgery, apicoectomy, apical surgery, periradicular surgery, hemostasis, hemostatic agents, and bleeding control. The authors searched the Medline database for articles published up to 1 September 2010. Experimental and clinical studies comparing the effectiveness and/ or adverse effects of two or more hemostatic agents and published between 2000 and 2010 were included in the review. Results: Four studies were analyzed: two clinical studies and two experimental studi…

New insights into the Be/X-ray binary system MXB 0656-072

2012

The X-ray transient MXB 0656-072 is a poorly studied member of high-mass X-ray binaries. Based on the transient nature of the X-ray emission, the detection of pulsations, and the early-type companion, it has been classified as a Be X-ray binary (Be/XRB). However, the flaring activity covering a large fraction of a giant outburst is somehow peculiar. Our goal is to investigate the multiwavelength variability of the high-mass X-ray binary MXB 0656-072. We carried out optical spectroscopy and analysed all RXTE archive data, performing a detailed X-ray-colour, spectral, and timing analysis of both normal (type-I) and giant (type-II) outbursts from MXB 0656-072 This is the first detailed analysi…

The 54 days orbital period of AX J1820.5-1434 unveiled by Swift

2013

The hard X-ray survey that Swift-BAT has been performing since late 2004 has provided a considerable database for a large number of sources whose hard X-ray emission was poorly known. We are exploiting the BAT survey archive to improve the temporal and spectral characterization of the Galactic hard-X-ray sources. In this letter we focus on the study of the high mass X-ray binary AX J1820.5-1434. All the data relevant to AX J1820.5-1434 have been extracted from the BAT survey archive and analyzed using a folding technique to search for periodical modulations. A broad-band spectral analysis was also performed complementing the BAT spectrum with the available Swift-XRT and XMM-Newton pointed o…

Can pressure-induced cell inactivation be related to cell volume compression? A case study for Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2013

In this paper, emphasis has been put on the relationship between volume compression and cell inactivation for the Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain CBS 1171 submitted to high hydrostatic pressure treatments. The influence of cell dehydration on pressure inactivation was first investigated. Inactivation was found to be strongly limited, or even completely prevented for cells with a water content of 60% w/w or below. Moreover, the volume compression undergone by a single yeast cell was assessed as a function of pressure and hydration conditions using a high-pressure setup for pressure-volume-temperature measurements. Direct measurements of volume compression were performed on cell pellets after…

What does Ramon Llull mean when he says «[el resclús] se maravellá com podia esser que Deus no exoya la natura humana de Jesucrist, qui pregava per s…

2014

The proto-novel Fèlix, o Llibre de meravelles contains many unsettling «meravelles» or «wonders». One such consists in an observation made by a «recluse» —rather than by a professional theologian— concerning the prayers of Christ and of Mary and the angels, etc., to the effect that their prayers have been unable to call forth any response from God. The efficacy of such prayers is thus brought into question, as is the readiness of God’s mercy and grace. By contextualising such matters within medieval currents of Neoplatonism, particularly the doctrine of causality, I argue that Llull presents a causally conceived theorisation of the hypostatic union. I identify Biblical and medieval preceden…

Spanish Relativity Meeting (ERE 2014): almost 100 years after Einstein's revolution

2015

This volume presents the proceedings of the international scientific conference ''Spanish Relativity Meeting (ERE 2014): almost 100 years after Einstein's revolution''. The conference was devoted to discussing the current state-of-the-art of a wide variety of topics of research in the fields of Gravitation and General Relativity in the ''pre-centennial'' year of General Relativity. The name of the conference was chosen to highlight the importance of the upcoming one hundredth anniversary of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, officially established by the Internal Society on General Relativity and Gravitation in November 25th, 2015. In particular, the conference was organized along thr…

Synthesis of polymer nanogels by electro-Fenton process: investigation of the effect of main operation parameters

2017

Recently, electro-Fenton (EF) process has been shown as a promising, facile, effective, low cost and environmentally-friendly alternative for synthesizing polymer nanogels suitable as biocompatible nanocarriers for emerging biomedical applications. Here, the electrochemically-assisted modification of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) by EF process was studied to assess the role of key operation parameters for a precise modulation of polymer crosslinking and its functionalization with [sbnd]COOH and succinimide groups. The dimensions of the nanogels, in terms of hydrodynamic radius (Rh) and weight-average molecular weight (Mw), can be tuned up by controlling the electrolysis time, current density…

Solution behavior of 4-arm poly(tert-butyl acrylate) star polymers

2010

Abstract This paper reports the synthesis of 4-arm poly( tert -butyl acrylate) stars of different molar masses up to 10 6  g/mol by the “core-first” method using ATRP. All obtained stars have a monomodal and narrow molar-mass distribution ( The dilute-solution properties of these star polymers were investigated in good solvents (tetrahydrofuran and acetone). Gel permeation chromatography and dynamic and static light scattering were used to measure the hydrodynamic properties including intrinsic viscosity [ η ], radius of gyration R g , hydrodynamic radius R h , second virial coefficient A 2 and diffusion coefficient D 0 . These data were used to establish relationships between these paramet…
